4/17/19 WWE NXT Recap: Dream vs. Murphy; Dijakovic in Action; Baszler vs. Sane

The opening video plays and then Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, and Percy Watson welcome us to the show. We see that Johnny Gargano will address the NXT Universe and Shayna Baszler will defend the NXT Women’s Championship against Kairi Sane later tonight.

Match #1 – NXT North American Championship Match: The Velveteen Dream (c) vs. Buddy Murphy
Neither man gains an advantage until Murphy applies a side-headlock. Dream gets free, but Murphy locks it in again. Dream turns it into one of his own, but Murphy gets free. Both men exchange trips and quick covers, and then have a stalemate. Both men dodge rights and lefts, but Murphy drops Dream with a head scissors take down. Murphy connects with a knee strike and then sends Dream into the ring post. Murphy takes Dream down with a suicide dive and then tosses Dream back into the ring. Murphy connects with a Meteora from the top and goes for the cover, but Dream kicks out at two. Murphy kicks Dream a few times and then locks in a sleeper hold. Dream fights to his feet and backs Murphy into the corner to break the hold. Murphy comes back and slams Dream into the turnbuckle, but Dream connects with a few elbow shots.
Dream goes up top, but Murphy knocks him down to the mat. Murphy charges at Dream, but Dream catches him with a superkick. Dream and Murphy exchange shots and Dream delivers a dropkick and a clothesline to the outside. Dream connects with a double ax-handle and then takes Murphy out with a suicide dive. Dream tosses Murphy back into the ring and climbs up top. Murphy gets to his feet, but Dream connects with a Codebreaker and gets a two count. Dream goes for the Dream Valley Driver, but Murphy gets free with an elbow shot. Murphy drapes Dream over the rope and goes up top, but Dream cuts him off with a right hand. Dream climbs as well and both men exchange hands and fall to the floor. Both men get back into the ring at the nine count and exchange shots. Murphy drops Dream with a DDT and goes for the cover, but Dream kicks out at two.
Murphy goes up top again, but Dream cuts him off. Murphy slams Dream and goes for a sunset flip power bomb, but Dream counters with the Dream Valley Driver. Dream goes for the cover, but Murphy kicks out at two. Dream goes up top, but Murphy cuts him off with a superkick and a power bomb. Murphy goes for the cover, but Dream kicks out at two. Murphy connects with a kick to the face and a knee strike that sends Dream to the floor. Murphy tosses Dream back into the ring, but Dream catches him with the Famouser. Dream hits the Dream Valley Driver and the Purple Rainmaker and gets the pin fall.
Winner and still NXT North American Champion: The Velveteen Dream

Dominik Dijakovic will be in action later tonight. Johnny Gargano will address the NXT Universe up next.

The Street Profits cut a promo. They say they are going to create opportunities and go to William Regal’s office. Instead of Regal, they are greeted by War Raiders. Rowe says they went to Regal already and they will see the Profits in the ring next week.

Johnny Gargano’s music hits and the NXT Champion makes his way to the ring. Gargno says he has waited a very long time for this. After being told no in his tryout four years ago, he fought to finally be called Johnny Champion. The Undisputed ERA’s music hits and Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, and Bobby Fish come to the stage. Cole says this is about getting lucky. Cole says he beat Gargano and if it was not a Two-Out-of-Three Falls Match, he would be the NXT Champion. Cole says the fact that Gargano is proud of himself makes him an idiot. Cole says he is the uncrowned NXT Champion and Gargano is nothing more than a punk. Gargano asks if there is trouble in Cole’s little boy band. Gargano says Cole did beat him in the first fall, but he beat Cole in two straight by making him tap out both times and that is undisputed. Gargano says if he had lost, he wouldn’t be out here crying. Gargano says if Cole wants to get in the ring, he will put a few more points on the scoreboard. Cole, O’Reilly, and Fish walk down the ramp, but Roderick Strong blindsides Gargano with a knee strike. The other members of the ERA get into the ring and Cole lays Gargano out with a superkick.

Bianca Belair and Kairi Sane are shown warming up backstage. Dominik Dijakovic is in action next.

Footage of Kushida’s contract signing is shown. He will make his in-ring debut in two weeks. Highlights of the various NXT Superstars who were official placed on Raw or Smackdown over the last week is then shown.

Match #2 – Singles Match: Aaron Frye vs. Dominik Dijakovic
Dijakovic drops Frye with a boot to the face and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Dominik Dijakovic
-After the match, Dijakovic grabs mic. He says he is only in NXT because his family took the opportunity to move to the United States. He says his blood drives him to opportunity and he sees the North American Championship and tells Velveteen Dream to feast his eyes.

Cathy Kelley interviews The Undisputed ERA. Cole ignores the question about dissension in the ranks and William Regal interrupts. Regal says he talked to Johnny Gargano and he says Gargano told him he wanted to face the ERA. Cole asks when he gets to face Gargano, but Regal says Strong will face Gargano next week. Strong looks pleased at the news, while Cole does not.

Highlights of the feud between Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane are shown. Baszler will defend the NXT Women’s Championship against Sane up next, and if Sane loses she will not receive another shot at the title.

Aliyah and Vanessa Borne are backstage. They say they weren’t ready against Candice LeRae last week, but will be next week. They tell LeRae to find a partner to help her out.

Match #3 – NXT Women’s Championship Match: Shayna Baszler (c) (w/Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir) vs. Kairi Sane – if Sane loses, she will not receive another shot at the title
Baszler backs Sane into the corner and connects with body shots. Sane gets free and drops Baszler with a spinning back fist. Sane connects with the Sliding D and takes Baszler down on the floor with a cross body. Sane tosses Baszler back into the ring and connects with a forearm shot. Sane goes for the cover, but Baszler kicks out. Sane applies a side-headlock, but Baszler comes back with a forearm shot. Sane connects with a forearm of her own, but then Baszler connects with body shots and a knee strike. Baszler goes for the cover, but Sane kicks out at two. Baszler sends Sane to the corner and connects with a knee strike. Baszler goes for the cover, but Sane kicks out again. Baszler locks in a sleeper hold, but Sane elbows her way free. Sane dodges a knee strike and connects with the Interceptor.
Sane slaps Baszler across the chest and then takes her down with a dragon screw leg-whip.
Sane takes Baszler down again and locks in the Anchor submission. Baszler makes it to the ropes. Sane hits the Insane Elbow to the back of Baszler’s neck. Sane goes up again, but Baszler cuts her off with an enzuiguri. Baszler climbs as well and goes for a gut-wrench suplex. Sane counters and double stomps onto Baszler in the corner. Baszler rolls to the floor and Sane goes for a forearm shot, but Baszler dodges and Sane hits the barricade. Baszler tosses Sane back into the ring and begins to work over Sane’s arm. Baszler slams Sane to the mat and goes for the cover, but Sane kicks out at two. Baszler locks in an arm-bar, but Sane makes it to the ropes. The referee asks for the trainer to come check on Sane and Io Shirai comes out as well. Baszler grabs Sane and pulls her back into the ring. Baszler tries to stomp on Sane’s arm, but Shirai shoves Baszler and the referee calls for the bell.
Winner via disqualification and still NXT Women’s Champion: Shayna Baszler
-After the match, Duke and Shafir pull Shirai out of the ring and force her to watch Baszler stomp down onto Sane’s arm.
