4/8/11 WWE Smackdown Recap

Apr 8, 2011 - by staff

We start the show with WrestleMania aftermath. Alberto Del Rio comes out to the ring and tells the world he was screwed by Christian and Edge. That it took two of them to beat him. He feels he was cheated out of the World Title. Out comes Edge driving a tow truck dragging Del Rio’s beat up car from WrestleMania. After some good back and forth Teddy Long makes his way out to the stage. He says there is one way to solve this problem. Tonight it will be Alberto Del Rio v. Christian in a #1 Contender’s Match. The winner will go on to face Edge at Extreme Rules in a Ladder Match!!!

In Ring Action….

2 out of 3 Falls Match

Kane, Big Show, Kofi Kingston, and Santino Marella v. The Corre

This is a WrestleMania Revenge match. I wasn’t very excited about the match at WM, and I was not too excited about the match tonight. Eight Man Tags are never any good unless there is some history there. Now this does have a little history, but not enough to carry us through this program. Kofi gets the pin in the first fall. Wade Barrett gets the second pin on Santino for the second fall. And the Corre is DQ’d for the final fall. After the match the good guys clear the ring of the Corre and everyone goes home happy.

Winners-Kane, Big Show, Kofi Kingston, and Santino Marella
Losers-Anyone that had to watch this match

More In Ring Action….
Cody Rhodes v. Trent Baretta
Cody was very over at WM, much to my surprise. He is getting some much needed love from the crowd. I think they like the new dark Cody. Baretta is probably out the door on the next round of cuts. WWE always loves to do some spring cleaning. Quick match with Rhodes hitting the Cross Rhodes for the win. After the match Cody continues to attack Trent. Out comes Rey Mysterio for the save. It looks like these two are not done with each other.

Winner-Cody Rhodes
Loser-Trent Baretta’s future with WWE
We are treated to a replay of the Rock-Cena showdown on Raw. I don’t understand why they show this on Smackdown. It really brings down the power of Smackdown as its own Brand. Either way the Main Event at WrestleMania 28 will be Rock v. Cena. They are calling it the biggest match in WrestleMania history. I think Hogan and Andre might have something to say about that.
Backstage Edge and Christian are discussing the possibility of the having to face each other for Edge’s World Title if Christian wins tonight. Edges tells Christian his is pulling for him. Edge gets up and walks out leaving the Belt. Christian takes a long, slow look at what could be his crowning achievement.

In Ring Action…Sort of

Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix v. LayCool
I think all the Divas are pissed after Stone Cold Buried them on Tough Enough with his “Who” comment about Alisha Fox and Melina. Kelly and Beth get the win from a bickering LayCool.

Winners-Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly
Losers-Any match that was bumped for this
After the match Michelle McCool blamed Layla for the loss

In the Ring Michael Cole Welcomes Jack Swagger out to gloat. They are talking about Cole’s Victory at WrestleMania over Jerry Lawler. After a few minutes of loving each other the both run around the ring with their arms out acting like airplanes. Hit Sin Cara’s music. I absolutely love him. I loved him as Mistico in Mexico, and am so excited to see him here in the States. The Crowd is crazy for him. He makes his way to the ring and after some incredible textbook Sin Cara lands a 180 rolling barrel splash on Swagger from over the top rope onto the floor. Incredible. My only worry is that WWE has really nobody to work with him. Daniel Bryan, Evan Bourne, Rey Rey, who else. Please don’t blow this WWE. Please.

Main Event

#1 Contender’s Match
Alberto Del Rio v. Christian
I will be honest; I really thought this was Christian’s big push. His big moment to work towards his first WWE World Title. I know he carried the ECW belt, but I mean a real title. The ECW title at that time had been dropped down to a mid-carder belt at best. But tonight was to be his night. His first step to his final destination. It was not to be though. The Edge-Alberto Del Rio feud will continue.

Winner-Alberto Del Rio
Del Rio is the #1 Contender for the World Title
Loser-Christian’s chances of ever being more than a mid-career.
Credits.

On a side note tonight Michael Cole was asked why he wasn’t wearing his singlet tonight. His response was he wasn’t a wres…and entertainer tonight. That’s right, he almost slipped and said wrestler. That would have been great.
