Smackdown 01/21/11

Jan 22, 2011 - by staff

We start the show with Wade Barrett coming down to the ring with his new faction, The Corre. Ezekiel Jackson, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett will now be making their mark together on Smackdown. The difference from the Nexus will be the absence of a leader. Barrett explains that the four men will all be equals. They will lead as a group, and dominate as a group. Out comes Teddy Long to explain to The Corre they will not cause the problems on Smackdown that the Nexus caused on Raw. He will not have it on his show. Barrett promised that the Corre will take Smackdown to places that it has never been.

In Ring Action….
Alberto Del Rio v. R-Truth

Truth is way over with the crowd. I’m not sure that WWE knows what to do with him. Not a bad match with both men holding their own. Del Rio comes out on top in this one.

Winner-Alberto Del Rio

After the match we are taken to the back where we see Smackdown GM Teddy Long knocked out in his office. He is taken to hospital with severe trauma to the back of his head. The Corre denies any connection to this action. With Teddy out Vicki Guerrero takes control of Smackdown and announces that World Heavyweight Champion Edge will face a member of the Corre tonight.

In Ring Action….
Beth Phoenix v. Layla
Beth is on a roll here on Smackdown. I see her and Natalya going head to head sometime soon. She takes out Layla tonight with the Glam Slam.

Winner-Beth Phoenix

More In Ring Action….

Rey Mysterio v. Dashing Cody Rhodes
I believe this is the first time these two have ever met in singles competition. Rey does a nice job working with Cody. I really like Cody, I just don’t think he is getting any reaction from the crowds. I really liked Legacy, and I wish they would have let that go for a long, long time. Cody uses his size to control Rey for most of the match. But in the end the 619 was just too much for Cody. 619 and a splash for the win.

Winner-Rey Mysterio
After the match Cody was clutching his nose in horror. Could the Dashing one have broken his perfect face? Later in the night we find out that indeed he did.

Even More In Ring Action….
Amateur Wrestling Match
Jack Swagger v. Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston
Swagger had the edge in this one with his extensive background in amateur wrestling. Kofi does will with his pure talent. Swagger’s experience was too much for Kofi and he takes the victory 10-9.

Winner via Decision-Jack Swagger

After the match Kofi lands a Trouble in Paradise on Swagger just for good measure. NO POINTS AWARDED.

In Ring Action….

Drew McIntyre v. Trent Barreta
Barreta scored a surprise victory over Drew last week, and Drew is back to get his revenge. Baretta is an exciting new face on Smackdown, so we will see where this goes. Drew has been stuck in Midcard limbo for what seems like forever. I really think Drew could be huge, if he lets himself. At the end of the day he is his biggest competition. Baretta is now match for Drew’s hate today.

Winner-Drew McIntyre

After the match Baretta gets a shot in on Drew which prompts Drew to give him a beatdown not meant for PG TV. I love this side of Drew, it is what will take him back to the top. Kelly Kelly watches on in Horror.

We come back after the break to welcome the WWE Champion The Miz to the ring. He gets on the mic to tell the WWE fans he has big plans for World Heavyweight Champion Edge this Monday on Raw when they will face each other. As The Miz continues to babble on we hear the Champs music. Out comes Edge. He tells Miz to shut his mouth and get out of His ring. Alex Riley comes in the ring to assist, only to be greeted by Edge’s Spear. Let’s see what happens Monday.

Main Event
Non-Title Match
World Heavyweight Champion Edge v. Justin Gabriel

Gabriel gets selected to face Edge tonight. Before the match Vicki comes out and announces her boyfriend and the #1 Contender will be joining the announce team. Dolph Ziggler makes his way down to the announce table. Dolph is a mystery to me. I just don’t get the push he is getting. They had been serving him up to Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston, and now he is on the verge of the big Strap? Oh Well. Tonight Edge wrestled one man, but really he had to face the whole Corre. The numbers were just too much for him. With an unlimited amount of outside interference Edge falls to Justin Gabriel.
Winner-Justin Gabriel
After the Match the Corre takes Edge apart piece by piece. With Edge done in the middle of the ring Dolph Ziggler crawls in to stand over the fallen Champ.
