WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament participants

May 7, 2023 - by Staff

WWE has announced the 6 RAW Superstars and the 6 SmackDown Superstars that will compete to determine the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. The following names were just revealed:

RAW: Seth Rollins, Shinsuke Nakamura, The Miz, Damian Priest, Cody Rhodes, Finn Balor

SmackDown: Sheamus, WWE Hall of Famer Edge, WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, Bobby Lashley, AJ Styles, WWE United States Champion Austin Theory

It’s interesting to note that there are no free agents in the tournament. There had been some speculation on names like Brock Lesnar or Omos being booked for the tournament, but that is not the case unless they pull some sort of swerve at TV this week.

Tomorrow’s RAW will feature two Triple Threats with the winners facing off in the main event to determine which RAW Superstar advances to the finals. Friday’s SmackDown will also feature two Triple Threats with the winners locking up in the main event to determine the SmackDown Superstar that goes to the finals. The red brand finalist and the blue brand finalist will then meet to crown the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion at WWE Night of Champions on Saturday, May 27 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

WWE has not announced the Triple Threats as of this writing, but we will keep you updated.

So the finals for the title that will be exclusive to Raw will be someone from Raw vs. someone from Smackdown? Didn’t we literally just have a draft? I mean, no matter what happens it’s going to come down somehow to Lesnar costing Rhodes the title so Rhodes can win it at Summerslam, but…didn’t we literally just have a draft? I mean, they’ve never really cared about continuity in the brand split before so why should they start now, but…It’s. Been. One. Week.

@What? – Yeah, that is a bit odd but I heard that if someone from SD wins, they will become exclusive to Raw. Also, apparently the draft rosters become official after Night of Champions. Give it 6 months and Roman will be back on Raw to beat the new World Champ at Survivor Series.

@Kyle Christie – The draft results were intended to take affect after Backlash so tonight will start the post draft rosters. Honestly this has to be a Vince move to include SD wrestlers in a tournament for a RAW title because it’s absolutely stupid. Obviously the draft was a joke because Zayn/Owens are allowed to go to either show while champions so please for the love of god split those titles up. Why does WWE feel the need to do this with titles every so often?

  4. Kyle Christie says:

@JII -You could be right, I haven’t been keeping up with WWE lately, just going by what I see posted here. Yeah, the tag titles being combined is stupid. There is a good amount of tag teams that they could easily be split up and instead of just red / blue coins, maybe they could get a unique design. I loved the NXT UK tag titles, those looked pretty cool.
Personally, this new World Title is pointless to me, they should have just split the one Roman has or better yet, it should never have been combined in the first place. So much talent being prevented from getting to that next level with Roman holding both titles. I could see this being a reason why Drew McIntyre is looking to leave.

@Kyle -All of the UK titles were my favorite belt designs in the company but unfortunately they only recognize the Heritage Cup and that’s just because it’s the only thing that’ll come close to the ROH Pure Title. I hope they issue new tag titles as well because I haven’t liked a design since the World Tag Team/ WWE Tag Team era. The new World Title looks horrible compared to the former WCW Title. I’m just disappointed that the Universal title is basically pointless after Years of making it equal to the opposite shows WWE Title. I don’t blame you for not keeping up withthe WWE because I only started watching again because Vince stepped but now he’s back and I’m nothing but bored with the shows. NXT was my favorite brand in the company but it’s just atrocious now.
