Eric Bischoff defends NWA making Tyrus the World Champion

Nov 22, 2022 - by James Walsh

Eric Bischoff shared his opinion on Tyrus winning the NWA World Heavyweight Title during the latest episode of his 83 Weeks Podcast.

Tyrus won the title at Hard Times 3. Many fans criticized the decision made by NWA owner Billy Corgan. However, Bischoff understands the move.

“Billy’s gotta be a little bit careful of how he deals with his public. He’s a bit of an eccentric guy and I like Billy,” Bischoff said, before pointing out that Tyrus is a major on-air personality on the Fox News late-night show “Gutfeld. I mean they’re beating ‘Kimmel’ and Tyrus is a big part of that show and comes out with his belt.

If you’re Billy Corgan or anybody else are you not going to take advantage of that even if it does stir some people up cause guess what? ‘Controversy creates cash,’ you stir them up enough and people are going to tune in to see what happens next,” he added, stating that a lot of people today do like to complain, and Tyrus starring in a highly-rated show on the politically right-leaning Fox News only adds fuel to the fire. “You gotta at least let things play out before you start criticizing too much.”

Bischoff went on to compare the Tyrus title run to a TV show that sometimes takes a few episodes to get over with fans.

“While Tyrus has been around for a while, lets see what creative does for him before you start putting him on the grill.”

Bischoff is correct in his explanation. This draws more attention for NWA.

So “fans” now feel entitled to say someone who is of the opposite political ideology as them can’t be champion or is only some kind of political ploy? Last time I checked Tyrus has still been a part of wrestling alongside his political commentary career, one somehow makes his title win undeserving? I’d say Tyrus was just as nice a moment as Trevor Murdoch and Matt Cardona being NWA Champion as someone who was limited in WWE it’s nice to see them get their name on that belt.

Presently cable news channels are one of the only thing with pretty decent viewership. Having your belt on CNN or MSNBC would be just as good as FNC. But he’s been wearing the TV title on it for his whole reign. How much more viewership is going to come from that at this point?

I see no problem with Tyrus as champion. The publicity on FNC is a plus, but I’m more interested in who’s going after him for the title. There’s so many ways they can go. Matt Cardona, for, example, could challenge him due to not being pinned in the three-way match that Tyrus won the title. Or maybe, Cyon might challenge him after possibly turning on him.
