5 most shocking moments in WWE history
Wrestling remains a hugely popular sport all over the world and the WWE is the biggest brand around for many. This is not a surprise when you see the hard-hitting action it offers, the iconic events in the WWE and the range of interesting fighters it boasts, both past and present.
The WWE also attracts lots of fans because it is a great sport to bet on. This gives it mass appeal across the planet and leads to people in many countries betting on WWE bouts. Canada is a great example of this and there are some awesome bet websites in Canada to use for wagering on wrestling matches. The WWE is also popular with bettors and viewers alike for the shocking moments it regularly delivers.
But which have been the five most controversial to date?
1 – Undertaker’s winning WrestleMania streak ends
WrestleMania XXX will forever be linked with one of THE most shocking moments for WWE fans – the end of the Undertaker’s winning streak. While everyone knew it couldn’t last forever, it still caused a real stir when Brock Lesnar hit his signature F5 move to pin the Undertaker and end his 21-year winning run at WrestleMania.
2 – Controversial Hart loss in Montreal
In 1997, Brett Hart had decided to leave WWE for WCW but was refusing to give up his WWE titles to Shawn Michaels at the Survivor Series before he left. Come the night of their bout, it is thought Vince McMahon and Michaels went off-script to hand Michaels the win – without Hart’s knowledge beforehand.
3 – Undertaker and Mankind go crazy
Taking place in the King of the Ring event, the Undertaker’s 1998 Hell in a Cell match against Mankind is now seen as one of the most brutal WWE bouts. To begin with, both men climbed on top of the cell to start fighting, before Mankind was thrown off onto the announcer’s table below. After this, a choke slam by the Undertaker caused Mankind to fall through the cell wire and smash his nose on the ring below!
4 – Steve Austin becomes a heel
2001 was the year that WWE icon Stone Cold Steve Austin became a heel in an unexpected twist at WrestleMania 17. Siding with his longtime adversary Vince McMahon, he proceeded to beat The Rock with a chair in their bout to take the WWE title. Even worse, Austin shared a celebratory beer afterwards with one-time enemy McMahon.
5 – Lesnar falls to Goldberg in 2016
Goldberg had been away from the ring for 12 years before returning in 2016 to take on Brock Lesnar at the Survivor Series. Although many predicted a Lesnar win, Goldberg took only minutes to upset the odds and defeat Lesnar with a powerful jackhammer slam move.
