Dax Harwood on fans being upset AEW hiring ex-WWE talent

Nov 16, 2021 - by Steve Gerweck

“There are a lot of fans, and it boggles my mind, who are upset by this. They’re upset by seeing a lot of former WWE talent in AEW.

They’ve got to understand AEW cannot just hire independent wrestlers because if they only hire independent wrestlers for a television product, it’s almost like the blind leading the blind”

It’s a legitimate concern, though. I mean, sure, why blackball someone just for working in WWE, right? But it’s more than that. It’s the fact that a lot of people feel like people they were starting to get behind at AEW are suddenly being pushed aside for someone who just came from WWE. It’s a legitimate concern if it’s being voiced this much. People were saying the same thing about TNA. TNA was hiring all the ex-WWE guys, and then putting them in their HOF, when people who deserved it that were there from the get go got put to the side. People believe AJ Styles should’ve been in the TNA HOF and even he felt like the company stopped valuing his input, so he jumped to WWE. Again, it’s a very legitimate concern. One that shouldn’t be discounted so quickly.

Man. It’s almost like both points of view have merit and there are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. Almost like it isn’t a black-and-white, cut-and-dried, binary choice. Wait, that can’t be right. There’s no room for complexity in wrestling, just like in the rest of life. You’re either on my side or you’re the worst/stupidest/most whatever-ist person in the history of ever.

Essentially every company has brought in outside talent to help develop the newer talent. AWA brought in stampede talent. WCW brought in ex WWF talent after the split from NWA. WWF raided the KC and southern territories for its talent. After the rebrand from Tri-State Wrestling, ECW brought in ex WCW and WWF talent. People getting upset about this are no different than those that get upset when an NFL or MLB team loads up on free agents for a championship push. Get over it.

It’d be nicer if they actually put more effort into the television and story portion of their programming though. Which is someone WWE is struggling with too much as well.

There’s a reason for rivalries and storylines in and outside the ring portion. People need to care about the characters in the product. Those people need to keep the attention of the people they already have and interest new people seeing them for the first time.

Some people in wrestling today understand this and do very well with whatever they do. Others despite being on television for years, are as bland as the day is long and their only “fame” is from people who are just as bland themselves.

i dont know if people are upset. there’s a lot of people who are confused, after the whole launch angle was AEW was going to be new, fresh, different, be their own thing etc. then they just hire all the ex-wwe guys rather than building their own stars

@Mike Oxmaul–True, but when AEW started, they didn’t think WWE would be cutting a lot of good talent. People woulda complained if they HADN’T brought in Miro, Punk, etc. It’s time to panic when they start bringing in the Orlando Joneses from WWE like TNA did. Until then, everyone needs to relax. Also, Darby beating Sonny Kiss isn’t gonna elevate him much. But (eventually) beating some of those I mentioned will.
