AEW cleans up in 41st annual Wrestling Observer awards, Tony Khan and Cody Rhodes comment

Feb 26, 2021 - by Marc Middleton

AEW Co-Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes and AEW President & CEO Tony Khan took to Twitter this afternoon and reacted to AEW dominating the 41st annual Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards.

The awards are based on the time period from January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020. Each category is voted on by the readers of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, which includes fans an various people in the pro wrestling business. AEW topped the positive categories of the Observer readership awards, while WWE really came up short for the positive categories, even when it came to runner-ups. You can see the full list of wrestling award (excluding MMA categories) winners below.

Cody congratulated Khan on winning the awards for Booker of the Year and Promoter of the Year. Cody pointed out how Khan beat out WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon, and UFC President Dana White.

“Congratulations @TonyKhan – Booker/Promoter of the year in the 41st annual @WONF4W Awards! Beating out both legendary promoters Dana White and Vince McMahon. Amazing,” Cody wrote.

Khan thanked his AEW staff and the readers of the newsletter. Khan pointed to how the only other times one person won both Promoter and Booker of the Year in the same year were Vince in 1998, 1999 and 2000, and the late Giant Baba for All Japan Pro Wrestling in 1990 and 1991.

“Thank you to everyone working in @AEW + to the @WONF4W readers who voted me 2020 Booker of the Year + Promoter of the Year! The only other times that anyone won both in the same year were Vince 3x (98-00) & Baba 2x (90-91). I dreamed of this day for decades, thank you all so much,” Khan wrote.

    41st annual?! Christ

  2. Miko says:

Well yeah there dave’s buddys so you know.

  3. Breen says:

AEW cleans up, imagine that! Doesn’t Meltzer realize with crap like this he has no credibility left with anyone except the AEW fanboys. And believe me, with the garbage that AEW is putting out there their fan base will leave for the next fad, just like with ECW. Meltzer is a goof.

  4. J says:

I still don’t get why AEW is so loved. They are no different than WWE to me. Neither company has really good booking.

  5. Leo says:

I get it Dave likes AEW. Seriously some of these are just so laughable. Best booking? I just don’t get it.

  6. Joseph says:

I tried to watch AEW a few times and I just don’t get it. I’m not saying the WWE is better because in my opinion wrestling as a whole has become monotonous. But I seriously don’t get this love for AEW.

  7. Mackdeezy says:

I’m not gonna mince words with you all… I’m not too fond of AEW. HOWEVER, that doesnt mean I’m a WWE apologist. By any stretch of the imagination. Having said that, and having looked at the categories, you can clearly see an anti-WWE/pro-AEW rhetoric. I mean, sure, Bayley won something, and there’s a few pro-WWE wins here and there, but i csn count them all on one hand.

Having said that, despite the abysmal writing on Raw, exactly how is it the “worst” wrestling show? I’m not saying it should be the best, but how is it the worst? This is why people believe Meltzer is in bed with AEW… it shows.

  8. Gau says:

MJF, Brit Baker, Orange Cassidy & Taz?!! 🤦😂

  9. Snip says:

There is definitely is an anti-WWE/pro-AEW rhetoric. There also a pro-Bucks, Pro-Omega and Pro Moxley agenda.

Also in some cases the wrong person/wrong team/wrong promotion won an award.

Excalibur falls more towards the Worst TV Announcer side of things than towards the best. Tony Schiavone should have won the Best TV Announcer award as he is way better than Excalibur. (Excalibur should won Worst TV Announcer so AEW should have won both the Best and Worst TV Announcer awards)

Best Tag Team should have been FTR or The Undisputed Era.

Best Pro Wrestling Match of the Year should have gone to Ilja Dragunov vs Walter or Undertaker vs AJ Styles in my honest opinion.

Most Outstanding should have gone to Drew McIntyre.

Feud of the Year should gone to Bayley vs Sasha Banks.

I do however agree with WWE being the winner of the Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic.

  10. Jill says:

It’s funny hearing people complain for years about the WWE but then they just wanna complain about AEW, Impact, ROH & MLW all the time. Well quit watching wrestling then, cry ass people everywhere. If you don’t like it then don’t watch or comment.

  11. Revan says:

    MOST DISGUSTING PROMOTIONAL TACTIC
Winner: WWE firing people during a pandemic during a year where they were setting profit records

This was a “promotional tactic”? As in, the big payoff was Drake Maverick’s mega push? I’m not defending WWE, but that’s just stupid. That’s not a “promotional tactic”. Triple H accusing Kane of necrophilia, Mickie James’ “Piggy James” angle, sure, I’ll agree with those.

Also. WWE gets criticized for releasing talent during a pandemic during a year where they were setting profit records, but also for letting talent like Bo Dallas basically collect a paycheck while sitting at home. haha they just can’t win, huh?

  12. Steve says:

    Lol…just lol..
Okay so ROH firng their booker or Kelly Klein fired as women’s champions because safety & sexual harassment allegationa against ROH isnt disgusting… MLW’s show doesn’t have netter anhels and booked better than AEW.. Hmmmm guess some dont watch much wrestling.. worse gimmick for eyeballs would be bring over the hill wrestlers that can’t take a bump.

  13. Rob Dam Van! Shirt Typo! says:

Worlds Collide was the best night of wrestling from start to finish without any question. Also…no mention of Nick Aldis or Jacob Fatu?
