Biography

– Makabe excelled at judo at college level
– Makabe passed the entry test to the NJPW Dojo in February 1996 and would report for training in April
– Makabe debuted under his real name on February 15, 1997, losing to Shinjiro Otani
– Makabe won his first match on March 18, 1998, teaming with Otani to defeat Tatsuhito Takaiwa & Yutaka Yoshie by DQ
– At the 2000 Riki Choshu Revival event, Makabe defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi
– In late 2001, Makabe was sent to Europe, then to Puerto Rico on a learning excursion. During his time away from Japan, Makabe bulked up significantly, returning as a heavyweight in October 2002
