Reason behind Leon Ruff winning the North American title

Dave Meltzer reports that Leon Ruff winning the North American title was done to add more comedy to NXT. Meltzer said this:

“This is not something where you introduce a new talent and have him win a title on his first night to create a new star.(IE Carlito and Santino winning titles on their first night). With all the new talent they have in their system that wouldn’t have been the worst idea in the world and come in and win a title first night in. It’s done rarely but it’s an effective way to get a guy over instantly. This was NOT designed to make Leon Ruff a star.

This is Vince Russo level stuff. It devalues the title and it tells you Leon Ruff is a total joke. They could’ve done this with Jake Atlas or a Curt Stallion to use this to get them over. In the history of NXT there has never been a joke champion and I don’t find it as a good sign for NXT going in a comedy direction with all the years they’ve treated their championships well. But they’re trying to find a new formula is the way I would put it.”
