10/7/20 AEW Dynamite: Chris Jericho’s 30-Year Celebration Recap

The show opens with a video of various wrestlers talking about Chris Jericho. They all say that he is an influence on them, and talk about various matches and moments with him.

Excalibur, Jim Ross, and Ricky Starks, Taz, and Tony Schiavone are on commentary from Jacksonville, Florida.

1. FTW World Championship Match: Brian Cage (c) vs. Will Hobbs
They exchange shoulder tackles, but neither man get taken off his feet. Cage comes in and drops Hobbs with a back elbow, but Hobbs comes back and takes Cage to the mat. Hobbs comes off the ropes and takes Cage down with a cross-body. Hobbs goes for the cover, but Cage kicks out. Hobbs mounts in the corner and delivers a few shots to Cage. Cage comes back with a face-buster and goes for the cover, but Hobbs kicks out. Cage slams Hobbs in the corner and drives his shoulder into his midsection. Hobbs comes back with right hands to Cage, but Cage takes him down and kicks him in the face. Cage drops Hobbs with a fall-away slam and connects with a standing moonsault. Cage goes for the cover, but Hobbs kicks out. Cage applies a headlock, but Hobbs fights out with elbows. Cage goes back to the headlock, but Hobbs counters with a back drop. Hobbs kicks Cage in the face and drops him with a few clotheslines. Hobbs delivers a diving shoulder tackle and then delivers a power slam. Hobbs goes for the cover, but Cage kicks out. Hobbs delivers a sit out spine-buster and goes for the cover, but Cage kicks out again.
Hobbs delivers a few forearm shots, but Cage comes back with a pump handle face-buster. Cage drops Hobbs with the F-10 and goes for the cover, but Hobbs kicks out. Cage goes for another F-10, but Hobbs gets free. They exchange German suplexes and then drop each other with clotheslines. They exchange shots as they get to their feet, and then Hobbs delivers a spine-buster. Hobbs goes for the cover, but Cage kicks out. Hobbs goes up top for a frog splash, but Cage dodges it. Cage delivers the Drill Claw and gets the pin fall.

-After the match, Starks joins Cage in the ring. Taz says Hobbs was impressive. He says he lost, but he fought his ass off. Taz says it is time for the option game. He tells Hobbs option A is to join Team Taz, and option B is get get beat by Starks and Cage. Darby Allin comes to the ring with his skateboard, but Starks and Cage leave with no issue. Taz tells Allin he will learn one day soon to not stick his nose in Team Taz’s business.

Various people send congratulations to Chris Jericho, such as Slash, Dennis Miller, Hiroshi Tanahashi, his dad Ted Irvine, and Bully Ray.

A video package hyping next week’s main event between Jon Moxley and Lance Archer airs. Archer says he is angry and is ready to kick Moxley’s ass. He says Moxley has been spending his time with Eddie Kingston and The Butcher, but they aren’t him. Archer says it won’t be pretty, but he is going to have a good time.

Match #2 – AEW World Tag Team Championship Match: FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) (c) (w/Tully Blanchard) vs. The Hybrid2 (Angelico and Jack Evans)
Evans and Harwood start the match. Evans gets a quick roll-up for two and kicks Harwood in the face. Angelico tags in and takes Harwood down with a cross-body. Angelico goes for the cover, but Harwood kicks out. Harwood and Wheeler grab their belts and try to leave, but TH2 take them down with dives from the stage. Evans tosses Harwood back into the ring and goes for the cover, but Harwood kicks out. Evans slams Harwood to the mat and goes up top. Blanchard gets on the apron, and Wheeler drops Evans on the top rope behind the referee’s back. Harwood drops Evans with a leg whip and sends him to the floor. Harwood works over Evans’ knee and tosses him over the barricade. Harwood gets Evans back in the ring and wraps his leg around the ring post as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Wheeler and Evans are in the ring. Wheeler is in control and is working over Evans’ leg. Evans kicks Wheeler away and Harwood tags in. Evans drops Harwood to the mat, but Harwood comes back with a leg whip. Harwood applies a single leg Boston Crab, but Evans gets to the ropes. Evans comes back with a roll-up for two, but Wheeler tags in. Angelico tags in and kicks Wheeler in the head. Angelico drops Harwood and then takes Wheeler down with a leg whip. Angelico locks in a double submission on FTR, but they both get to the ropes as Blanchard pushed it towards them. Evans tags in and he and Angelico double team Wheeler. Evans takes out Harwood and goes for the cover on Wheeler, but Wheeler kicks out. Angelico tags back in and Evans splashes on Wheeler. Angelico goes for the cover, but Wheeler kicks out as The Young Bucks are shown watching from backstage. Evans tags back in, but Wheeler takes him down. Harwood tags in and suplexes Evans. Wheeler drops Evans with a snap dragon and Harwood goes for the cover, but Angelico breaks it up. Evans fights back with elbows, but Harwood drops him with a right hand.
Harwood puts Evans up top, but Angelico helps out and Evans drops Harwood to the mat. Evans connects with a kick to the face and then a moonsault. Evans goes for the cover, but Wheeler breaks it up. Angelico sends Wheeler to the floor and goes for a dive, but Wheeler dodges it and slams him face-first into the apron. Evans drops Wheeler to the floor and rolls up Harwood for two. Harwood goes for a suplex, but Evans lands on his feet. Harwood comes back with a clothesline and plants Evans with a Tiger Driver. Harwood goes for the cover, but Evans kicks out. Harwood puts Evans up top and Wheeler tags in. Harwood suplexes Evans and Wheeler connects with a splash from the top and gets the pin fall.
Winners and still AEW World Tag Team Champions: FTR
-After the match, The Young Bucks are backstage. They say FTR are pretty good, but they lay out the cameraman with superkicks because he was spying on them. Best Friends’ music hits and they come out wearing shirts of FTR as weenies. Trent calls them weenies and Chuck Taylor says they are the number one contenders. He says they walked past Tony Khan backstage, and he told them that they get their title shot next week. FTR try to hit Best Friends with the titles, but Best Friends duck and deliver a few shots. FTR escape the ring, but Best Friends grab the belts and hold them in the air. They drop the belts and share a hug.

MJF talks about Chris Jericho. He says people say to never meet your heroes, but he disagrees. He says Jericho gave him good advice when they first met. MJF says as their friendship begins to bloom more and more each week, he just wants Jericho to know that he is proud of him.

Shaquille O’Neal, Gene Simmons, Don Callis, Lars Ulrich, and Diamond Dallas Page congratulate Jericho on his thirty years.

A video package covering the feud between Cody and Mr. Brodie Lee airs.

Match #3 – AEW TNT Championship – Dog Collar Match: Mr. Brodie Lee (c) (w/John Silver) vs. Cody (w/Arn Anderson)
Lee and Cody exchange shots, and then Cody takes a shot at Silver on the outside. Lee drops Cody to the mat and delivers more shots. Silver has been busted open as Lee goes for an elbow drop. Cody dodges it and kicks Lee in the face. Cody delivers a couple clotheslines and drops Lee to his knees. Cody comes off the ropes, but Lee uses the chain to pull him to the mat. Lee pulls Cody to the floor and delivers a right hand. Lee slams Cody face-first onto the apron and tells Silver to sit down at ringside. Cody dropkicks Silver in the chair, but Lee drags him into the ring. Anna Jay comes back to ringside to check on Silver as Lee busts Cody open with the chain. Lee chops Cody a few times in the corner, but Cody comes back and low blows Lee with the chain. Cody uses the chain and drops Lee with a side-Russian leg sweep. Lee leaves the ring, but Cody uses the chain and drives Lee into the barricade with a dive. Lee uses the chain and pulls Cody into the barricade and pulls him over the barricade to the floor. Lee drags a table to ringside and lays Cody on the apron. They fight on the apron, but Lee shoves Cody to the floor. Lee comes off the apron, but Cody drops him with a Cutter as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, we see that Cody delivered a package pile driver to Lee through the table at ringside. Lee has been busted open as they are back in the ring. Cody delivers a few shots and slams Lee to the mat. Cody uses the chain and delivers a few more shots. Lee gets back to his feet, but Cody delivers more shots. Cody wraps the chain around the ring post and chokes Lee with the other half. Cody slams Lee into the corner, but Lee sends Cody to the outside. Lee pulls on the chain as Cody his hung in the ropes. Cody comes back in, but Lee drops him with a spinning slam. Lee goes for the cover, but Cody kicks out. Lee hits Cody with the chain a few times and grabs a chair. He throws the chair at Anderson on the outside and Anderson gets into the ring. Alex Reynolds comes out, but Anderson drops him with a spine-buster. Lee hits Anderson with the chain, but Cody rolls Lee up for two. Cody delivers a kick and hits Lee with the chain a few times. Cody drops Lee to the mat and chokes him with the chain. Cody connects with a moonsault and goes for the cover, but Lee kicks out.
Lee comes back with a kick to the midsection, but Cody drops him to the mat. Cody goes for the cover, but Lee kicks out. Lee delivers a superkick, followed by another, and plants Cody with a power bomb on the chain. Lee goes for the cover, but Cody kicks out. Cody goes to the outside, but Lee follows him. Cody pulls Lee into the ring post and gets him back into the ring. Cody goes up top, but Lee cuts him off. Lee climbs as well and delivers a superplex. They exchange shots and Lee plants Cody to the mat. Lee goes for the Discus Lariat, but Cody counters and slams him to the mat with the Final Cut. Cody wraps the chain around Lee’s face and delivers elbow strikes. Cody delivers Cross Rhodes and gets the pin fall.
Winner and new AEW TNT Champion: Cody
-After the match, the Nightmare Family joins Cody in the ring, as does Tony Schiavone. Cody says it is an honor to compete in front of a live crowd. Cody says he is sticking with the people until the very end. Cody says he is going to defend the title again in his open challenge, and Schiavone asks who against. Orange Cassidy comes out, and Cody gives him a thumbs up.

Excalibur announces that Wardlow, Colt Cabana, and Adam Page will join Jungle Boy, Rey Fenix, and Kenny Omega in the tournament to crown the number one contender for the AEW World Championship. There are two spots remaining, and the winner will challenge the AEW World Champion at Full Gear on November 7th. Kenny Omega is backstage with Alex Marvez. He says he is ready to get his hands on the AEW World Champion. He says it will be a tournament to watch, and he will stake his claim on the title belt. He brings up Page’s name over and over and says he doesn’t care who he faces, because he will roll through the tournament.

Match #4 – Singles Match: Big Swole vs. Serena Deeb
They lock up and Swole applies a wrist-lock. Deeb counters with one of her own and drops Swole to the mat. Swole gets free and they stand at a stalemate. They have a test of strength and Swole drops Deeb to the mat. Swole delivers shots to Deeb’s back and delivers forearms to her face. Deeb comes back with a clothesline and controls Swole in the ring as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Deeb charges at Swole in the corner, but they butt heads. Swole delivers a few clotheslines and goes for the cover, but Deeb kicks out. Deeb comes back with a back-breaker and goes for the cover, but Swole kicks out. Swole comes back with a quick roll-up for two. They exchange more shots, but Swole comes back and delivers Dirty Dancing and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Big Swole

Jon Moxley cuts a promo. He says people are always waiting around the corner, and he knows someday someone will eventually take him out. He says that could very well be Lance Archer next week. He says people don’t beat Archer, they survive him. He says maybe Archer wins next week, or maybe he wins. He says he will not lay down for Archer and will leave it all in the ring. Moxley says it’s like Archer always says: everybody dies.

Match #5 – Tag Team Match: Chaos Project (Luther and Serpentico) vs. The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho and Jake Hager) (w/Ortiz, Sammy Guevara, and Santana)
Jericho and Serpentico start the match. Serpentico takes Jericho down with an arm-drag, but Jericho comes back with a clothesline. Luther tags in and takes Jericho down. Luther delivers a series of shots and tags Serpentico back in. Serpentico delivers a few chops and a few more shots, and tags Luther back in. Luther drops Jericho to the mat and goes for the cover as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Jericho is in control of Serpentico. Jericho delivers a few chops, but Serpentico comes back with a DDT. Luther tags in and knocks Hager to the floor. Luther clotheslines Jericho to the floor and sends Serpentico onto all of The Inner Circle at ringside. Luther goes up top and dives onto The Inner Circle on the floor. Luther rolls Jericho back into the ring and delivers a knee drop. Luther goes for the cover, but Jericho kicks out. Luther charges, but Jericho sends him to the apron. Luther comes back with a clothesline, and then drives Jericho the match with a springboard bulldog. Luther goes for the cover, but Jericho kicks out. Luther and Serpentico double team Jericho and Luther goes for the cover, but Hager breaks it up. Jericho calls for Floyd the bat, but Luther catches it and hits Jericho with it. Luther kicks Jericho to the mat and goes for the cover, but Jericho kicks out. Guevara gets knocked to the floor, but Jericho hits Luther with the Judas Effect and gets the pin fall.
Winners: The Inner Circle
-After the match, The Inner Circle get into the ring. Jericho says thanks to everyone for thirty years, but MJF interrupts. He comes to the ring with Wardlow, who is carrying something under a cloth. MJF says he is out there because he respects Jericho and because he wants to be a part of the celebration. MJF presents Gladicho the Clown, who is holding a present from MJF. MJF says he is going to make a career-defining announcement next week and he wants Jericho to be there. The present is a picture of MJF, and Jericho breaks it over the clown’s head and lays him out with a Judas Effect. Jericho says he hates clowns and tells MJF to never interrupt him again. They share a quick life, and then more wrestlers come from the back to celebrate Jericho as the show comes to a close with Jericho’s name on all of the closing credits.
