8/27/20 AEW Thursday Night Dynamite Recap

The opening credits roll. Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone are on commentary, and they are joined by Chris Jericho from Jacksonville, Florida.

Match #1 – #1 Contender’s (AEW Tag Team Championship) Gauntlet Match: #4 The Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall) (w/Allie) vs. #3 The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) vs. #2 Best Friends (Chuck Taylor and Trent) vs. #1 FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) (w/Tully Blanchard)
The Natural Nightmare and The Young Bucks are the first two teams. Marshall and Nick start the match first and Nick takes control. Matt tags in and gets a two count on Marshall, and then Rhodes tags in. Rhodes and Matt exchange arm-drags and Matt gets a roll-up for two. Rhodes comes back with a power slam to both Bucks and tags in Marshall. Marshall and Rhodes slam Matt to the canvas and Marshall goes for the cover, but Matt kicks out. Marshall delivers a dropkick and goes for another cover, but Matt kicks out again. Rhodes tags in, but Matt takes control. The Bucks double-team Rhodes and Matt goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out. Rhodes comes back and delivers a Destroyer to Matt and tags in Marshall. Nick tags in as well, but Marshall drops him with a shoulder block. Marshall slams Nick to the mat and goes for the cover, but Nick kicks out. Matt tags back in and the Bucks delivers a double superkick to Marshall and then to Rhodes. Marshall comes back and rolls up Matt for two, and then delivers a eight hand. Nick delivers an enzuigiri to Marshall and tags in. The Bucks deliver the BTE Trigger to Marshall and get the pin fall.
Winners and advancing in the gauntlet: The Young Bucks

Best Friends enter the match now. Taylor and Nick start the match and Taylor backs Nick into the corner. Trent tags in, and he and Taylor drop Nick to the mat. Trent goes for the cover, but Nick kicks out. Trent slams Nick into the corner and tags Taylor back in. Nick comes back with a kick to Trent’s face, and then takes Taylor down in the ring. Nick goes for a moonsault on the outside, but Trent dodges it and drops him with a Spear. Best Friends double-team Nick in the ring and Taylor goes for the cover, but Nick kicks out. Trent tags back in and delivers a series of right hands to Nick. Trent goes for the cover, but Nick kicks out. Taylor tags back in and suplexes Nick to the mat. Taylor goes for the cover, but Nick kicks out. Trent tags in again and connects with a double ax handle. Nick comes back with a chop, but Trent kicks him in the midsection. Trent goes for a suplex, but Nick counters with a knee strike. Nick sends Taylor to the floor and then drops Trent with a suplex on the apron. Matt tags in and delivers shots to Taylor and Trent. Matt drops Taylor with a DDT and then drops Trent with a stunner. Matt goes for the cover, but Trent kicks out.
Matt knocks Taylor back to the floor and takes Trent down with a series of suplexes. Trent comes back with a DDT and Taylor and Nick tag in. Nick delivers shots in the corners, but Taylor counters with a slam to the mat. Best Friends double-team Nick and drop him with the Soul Food/half-and-half combo. Best Friends hug and go for Strong Zero, but Nick counters and rolls Trent up for two. Trent knocks Matt to the floor and delivers a chop to Nick. Nick comes back with a kick and then the Bucks drop Trent on the floor. Matt tags in and Nick connects with a 450 splash on Trent. Matt goes for the cover, but Trent kicks out. The Bucks set up for the Indietaker, but Adam Page holds onto Nick’s foot and Trent rolls up Matt for the pin fall.
Winners and advancing in the gauntlet: Best Friends

FTR enters the match now. Back from the commercial, FTR is in control of the match. Harwood tags in and works over Taylor’s knee. Taylor comes back with a roll-up, but Harwood kicks out. Taylor sends Wheeler to the floor and rolls Harwood up again, but Harwood kicks out. Trent delivers a shot to Harwood, but Wheeler pulls Trent to the floor and delivers a suplex. Harwood chop blocks Taylor’s knee and locks in a knee-bar and Taylor taps out.
Winners and number one contenders: FTR

A vignette for Darby Allin airs. He reiterates that he is not afraid of anything as he jumps from a bridge. Allin is confirmed for the Casino Battle Royale at All Out, along with Lance Archer.

Match #2 – Singles Match: Lance Archer (w/Jake Roberts) vs. Sean Maluta
Archer drops Maluta with a big shot and runs him over with a shoulder tackle. Archer slams Maluta into the apron and slaps him across the chest. Archer tosses Maluta back into the ring and clubs him across the chest. Maluta comes back with shots, but Archer knocks him down again. Archer suplexes Maluta across the ring and delivers elbows in the corner. Archer delivers a choke slam and goes for the cover, but he pulls Maluta up at two. Archer puts Maluta in the corner and drops him with the Blackout. Archer delivers the EBD Claw and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Lance Archer
Back from the commercial, Archer and Roberts are still in the ring. Roberts says 21 men will enter the Casino Battle Royale, but only one will walk out. Roberts says it better be Archer, because they need to get the blemish off their record. Archer says everybody dies and Roberts says Archer eats them up and chews them out. Brian Cage and Ricky Starks interrupt, along with Taz. Taz tells Roberts to slow down and says Archer will not be victorious at All Out. Taz says it will be a member of Team Taz. Taz, Cage, and Starks get into the ring, but Darby Allin comes out as well. Allin attacks Starks and beats him up the tunnel. Cage and Archer start to go at it, but Roberts and Taz hold them back.

MJF is backstage with his campaign team. They all slowly walk toward the ring from backstage.

A video hype package for the AEW Women’s World Championship Match at ALl Out airs. Hikaru Shida will defend the title against the NWA Women’s World Champion, Thunder Rosa.

Back from the commercial, MJF comes to the ring with his campaign team for the contract signing. The AEW World Champion, Jon Moxley, follows. MJF’s lawyer oversees the signing, and says they are here to sign the contract to ban the Paradigm Shift at All Out. MJF says it is easy to sign, and he just did it. He says they’ve all seen numerous contract signings, and they always end in physicality. MJF says since he is injured, he would appreciate if Moxley participates in social distancing, like his hairline. Moxley laughs and says MJF will get there after he goes through puberty. MJF says everyone is wanting the match, but he has never bought into the hype for Moxley. He says Moxley is a badass and was hyped up by Mike Tyson, but they are fighting in a professional wrestling ring on September 5th. He says Moxley idolizes guys like Sandman and New Jack, while he idolized guys like Ernie Ladd and Tully Blanchard. MJF says he won’t buy into Moxley’s games and will beat Moxley like the dog he is. MJF says he will become the AEW World Champion on September 5th, because we deserve better. MJF says if Moxley thinks he is so good and is better than MJF, why does he need one move to beat him? MJF says if that is the case, Moxley needs to tell his wife that he is single. Moxley gets up, but the lawyer tells him he will sue if he touches MJF. Moxley says he does not need to have the Paradigm Shift to beat MJF, but he does want to drop him on his head six or seven more times. He says he is thinking of all of the limbs he can snap and all the ways he can choke MJF out. Moxley says he will sign the contract, but tells MJF to remember two things: nothing MJF says matters, and nothing Moxley signs matters. He tells MJF he is a dead man on September 5th. MJF and his team celebrate, but Moxley thanks them for being cool with what he added on page 17. They are confused, and Moxley says next week he is facing MJF’s lawyer in a match. He says if the lawyer doesn’t show up, MJF doesn’t get his title match.

Santana and Ortiz cut a promo on Best Friends. They say the beef wasn’t even with Best Friends, but Best Friends made it personal. They apologize for Trent’s mom not being in the van when they destroyed it a few weeks ago, and say it’s time to Best Friends to pay up.

Match #3 – Eight-Man Tag Team Match: Brian Pillman Jr., Griff Garrison, Joey Janela, and Sonny Kiss vs. Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix) and The Butcher and The Blade (w/Eddie Kingston)
Blade and Garrison start the match. Garrison splashes Blade in the corner and then all eight men get into the ring and brawl. Fenix and Pentagon take out the opponents with dives to the outside. They slap Garrison in the chest and toss him back into the ring. Butcher and Blade double-team Garrison in the ring, but Garrison comes back with shots to Blade. He drops Blade with a kick to the face and tags in Kiss. Kiss delivers shots to Blade and takes him down with a hurricanrana. Kiss slaps Blade in the face and delivers a rolling elbow. Janela tags in and he and Kiss take Blade to the mat. Janela drops him with a side-Russian leg sweep and Kiss kicks him in the face. Janela backs Blade into the corner with a few shots, but Blade comes back and tags in Butcher. Butcher, Pentagon, and Fenix splash Janela in the corner as Garrison, Kiss, and Pillman are sent to the floor as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Fenix and Janela are the legal men. Butcher tries to get involved, but Janela takes him down. Kiss tags in and takes Fenix down with a hurricanrana. Kiss kicks Fenix in the back of the head and goes for the split drop from the top, but Fenix dodges it. Fenix comes back and runs the ropes, but Kiss trips him up. Janela drops Fenix with a Death Valley Driver on the apron, and then Pentagon drops Janela with a package pile driver. Pillman gets in the ring and drops Blade with a dropkick. Pillman and Buthcer exchange shots, but Butcher drops him with a clothesline. Butcher and Blade slam Pillman to the mat and Pentagont tags in. Pentagon and Fenix double team Pillman and slam him to the mat and Pentagon gets the pin fall.
Winners: Lucha Brothers and The Butcher and The Blade
-After the match, Kingston says all five of them will be in the Casino Battle Royal, and one of them will win it.

Footage of Mr. Brodie Lee beating Cody for the AEW TNT Championship on last Saturday’s Dynamite is shown. The Dark Order’s music hits and Evil Uno leads the group out with Colt Cabana. The rest of the guys bring a coffin out and set it on the stage. Uno says he has never been this happy, and Stu Grayson bought two dream cars. Uno says Mr. Lee bought six lawn mowing pieces of equipment and says they are here to celebrate. He says they are bidding farewell to the man known as Cody. They open the coffin, and Dark Order member number Ten is inside posing as Cody. He gets out and they close the coffin. Uno says the casket has been closed on the Nightmare Family and it is time to make way for the new AEW TNT Champion, Mr. Brodie Lee. Lee comes to the stage with Anna Jay. Lee high-fives and hugs everyone except John Silver and tells Tony Schiavone to get into the ring. Lee says The Dark Order were laughed at by people like Schiavone while he was at home in a prison. He says he did what he said he was going to do when he won the title. Lee says they have buried the Nightmare Family and there is no one in the locker room that can stand up to him. He says the open challenge is over and Cody will never get the title back. Lee says he wants to officially introduce Anna Jay as the newest member of the Dark Order and calls her the Queen Slayer. Silver interrupts Lee and says he has been celebrating since Saturday, and Lee drops him with a big shot. He tells them to get Silver out of the ring and tells Schiavone to leave. Dustin Rhodes rushes the ring with QT Marshall, but the Dark Order has the numbers advantage. Scorpio Sky comes out and drops a few of the Dark Order members. Sky gets in Lee’s face, but Jay slaps him in the face. Lee drops Sky with a shot, and then Lee leaves the ring with Jay and Cabana. Matt Cardona comes out and drops Uno with Radio Silence. He gets in the ring and helps Marshall, Rhodes, and Sky clear the ring of the rest of The Dark Order. Lee and the rest of The Dark Order stare down Sky, Cardona, Rhodes, and Marshall from the stage.

Dasha is at the bar and finds Adam Page. The Young Bucks walk in and want to know why he cost them the match earlier tonight. They call him insecure and say all they wanted was a friend. They say he is nothing but a drunk and Matt throws a drink in his face. They say they are done with Page and kick him out of The Elite.

Match #4 – 3-on-1 Handicap Match: Big Swole vs. Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D., Penelope Ford, and Rebel (w/Kip Sabian)
Baker is still in a wheelchair and is now wearing a face guard. Baker says if Swole wins tonight, she can face Baker one-on-one in any match she wants. Rebel and Ford try to double-team Swole, but Swole comes back and fights them off. The bell rings and Ford drops Swole to the mat. Ford goes for the cover, but Swole kicks out. Swole comes back with a headbutt, but Ford shoves her into the ropes and chokes her over the ropes. Ford backs Swole into the corner and tags in Rebel. Ford and Rebel double-team Ford in the corner and Rebel goes up top. Swole comes back and takes Rebel down with a hurricanrana. Sabian gets on the apron, but Swole pulls him to the floor and delivers a rolling elbow. Ford kicks Swole in the face and rolls her back into the ring. Rebel goes back up top and hits a moonsault and goes for the cover, but Swole kicks out. Ford tags in, who delivers more elbow shots to Swole. Rebel grabs a crutch from Baker, but accidentally hits Ford with it and Swole gets the pin fall.
Winner: Big Swole

Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, and Anna Jay come back to ringside. They find Tay Conti at ringside, and they present her with a recruiting folder for the Dark Order. She takes the folder and gives Jay a hug.

Next week, Dynamite returns to Wednesday night, and the announced card thus far is:

Best Friends vs. Santana and Ortiz
Chris Jericho vs. Joey Janela
Private Party and SCU (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) vs. The Young Bucks and Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus); the winners of this match will face each other at All Out.
Jon Moxley vs. Mark Sterling

Match #5 – Tables Match: Matt Hardy vs. Sammy Guevara
Hardy and Guevara brawl from the start and they go to the outside. Hardy throws a chair at Guevara’s head as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Hardy is in control and has busted Guevara open. Hardy goes for a dive on Guevara through a table, but Guevara moves and Hardy crashes through the table. The match continues because Guevara did not physically put Hardy through the table. Guevara goes for a chair shot, but Hardy blocks it with a kick. Hardy delivers a Twist of Fate with Guevara’s head wrapped in the chair. Hardy grabs a table from under the ring and the word “Deleted” is spray painted on the table. Hardy sets the table up in the ring and lays Guevara on it. Hardy climbs up top, but he can’t keep his balance. Guevara climbs up top and suplexes Hardy through the table for the win.
Winner: Sammy Guevara
-After the match, Orange Cassidy charges out and attacks Jericho at the announce table. They brawl across the stage as Guevara and referees try to pull them apart. They brawl on the ground as the show comes to a close.
