5/20/20 AEW Dynamite Recap

Follow along with the Starman as he recaps tonights episode of AEW Dynamite.

A video package previewing tonight’s show is aired as a limo arrives as the Inner Circle comes out. Chris Jericho has a bat and says if people thought what he did to Vanguard 1 last week was bad, just wait to see what he has in store for The Elite tonight.

We go into the arena at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville where the announce team runs down tonight’s card, which will be kicked off by Jon Moxley taking on 10 of the Dark Order. Brodie Lee comes out a few members of the Dark Order and tells 10 and to take a knee. Lee assures everyone that he puts his pants on the same way and doesn’t walk on water, but he is a man that has come in possession with the AEW World Championship. Lee says he has to win on Saturday before telling 10 that he was handpicked and wants him to go hurt Jon Moxley.

Match 1: 10 vs. Jon Moxley
The Dark Order leaves the ringside area as the match starts and Moxley takes 10 down with a leaping knee. Moxley methodically picks 10 apart before 10 is able to knock Mox out to the floor and works him over. Back in the ring, 10 gets in a few near falls until Moxley connects with a DDT followed by a piledriver. Moxley puts 10 away with a Paradigm Shift to pick up the pin fall.

After the match, Moxley tosses some chairs into the ring and grabs a microphone. Moxley wraps a chair around 10’s arm before says he’s not going to chase Lee around the building tonight and is giving him 10 seconds before he breaks 10’s arm. Moxley starts counting down Lee appears on the big screen. Lee says if he wants his belt back, all he had to do was ask, but now he’s making things personal. Lee then says in times like these, everyone has to make sacrifices and leaves the arena. Moxley then smashes the chair with another chair and leaves the ring.

The announce team hype the main event for Double or Nothing on Saturday between Moxley and Lee. MJF’s music then hits as he comes out with Wardlow for the next match of the night as we head into a commercial break.

Prior to the match, Jim Ross sends condolences to the family of Shad Gaspard and mentions his time in the WWE as a part of Cryme Tyme. Classy move. I also send my condolences.

Match 2: MJF vs. Marko Stunt
The match begins and MJF locks Stunt in a bear hug and toys with him a bit before leveling Marko with a clothesline. MJF says this is Jungle Boy’s future on Saturday as Marko is able to mount a surprising comeback and sends MJF out to the floor and into the steel steps. MJF has enough and connects with a right and a shoulder breaker before locking in the Salt of the Earth to pick up the submission victory.

MJF grabs a microphone and gives Marko Stunt credit for lasting longer than expected. He then tells Marko that he can kiss the ring and levels him with a right as the Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus come out to the rescue. The two side share some words before MJF and Wardlow walk off.

A video recap of the events that took place between Cody and Lance Archer is aired. The announce team hypes the title match between the two for the TNT Championship this Saturday and how Mike Tyson will be on hand to present the title. Jake Roberts then make his way to the ring as we head into a commercial break.

Arn Anderson makes his way to the ring where Tony Schiavone will conduct a sit down interview with Anderson and Jake Roberts. Anderson and Roberts sits at table across from each other and Roberts says Lance Archer is the real deal and is a mean son-of-a-bitch that will rip Cody’s heart out. Roberts then issues a challenge between the two of them, any time, any place. Anderson says Cody has to win the championship as he is one of the leaders of AEW and that he earned it. Anderson then says that he is glad Roberts is doing DDP Yoga so he’ll be limber when he spinebusters his ass. Roberts tosses the table aside as referees come out to keep them away from each other.

The announce team hype the Casino Ladder Match at Double or Nothing for a shot at the AEW World Championship. A Darby Allin video is aired that shows him climbing a ladder and playing cards while shoving all of his chips in.

A video package with Pac is aired where he calls out Orange Cassidy and burns one of his photos. This brings us to the next match of the night.

Match 3: Orange Cassidy vs. Rey Fenix
Fenix tries to kick Cassidy on the entrance ramp, but Cassidy is able to slowly evade it. The match starts as Cassidy is able to take Fenix down with a series of moves with his hands in his pockets. Fenix heads out to the floor to regroup before the two trade off with a series of pin attempts. Fenix hits an impressive springboard leg drop to pick up a near fall and take control of the match as we head into a picture in picture commercial break where Fenix stays in control. The match resumes and Cassidy takes Fenix out with a diving DDT for a near fall. Cassidy continues to counter Fenix’s offense as Kip Sabian brings a ladder out and sits atop of it. This distracts Cassidy enough for Fenix to hit a low blow and pick up the pin fall.

SCU then comes out and tips the ladder sending Sabian into the ring. Jimmy Havoc comes out and both sides begin brawling in and out of the ring. Rey Fenix and Colt Cabana then fly off the ring and onto the group on the floor. Best Friends and Orange Cassidy join in as we head into a commercial break.

Match 4: Kris Statlander & Hikaru Shida vs. Dr. Britt Baker & Nyla Rose
Rose brings a kendo stick to the ring and swings it at Shida prior to the match starting. Statlander and Shida double team Rose to take her down as the bell rings to get the match officially started. Rose quickly takes control of the match and powers Statlander around the ring. Baker refuses to be tagged into the match and allows Rose to show off her strength as we head into a picture in picture commercial break. During the break, Rose has had enough of Baker’s antics and grabs her by the throat to force a tag.

Statlander then fights her way out of their corner and makes the hot tag to Shida, who takes out both Baker and Rose. The match breaks down as Statlander and Shida double team Rose and slam her into Baker. The match continues with Shida and Statlander working together to work over Rose as Baker is being tended to on the ring apron. Rose then connects with a Beast Bomb on Shida to pick up the pin fall victory.

After the match, Rose brings a table to the ring and sets it up to splash Shida through it, but Statlander prevents Rose from doing it. Shida then suplexes Rose through the table.

Alex Marvez is with Jon Moxley who says that things only get worse from here as he will send Lee’s 280 pound body to the mat to put him to sleep. Moxley says all Lee will have left is a couple of freaks in some gimp masks as we head into a commercial break.

We are interrupted for some breaking news from SSN (Shawn Spears News), who tells us that Dustin Rhodes has retired. Spears makes fun of Rhodes’ past before saying that the fact that Spears doesn’t have a match on Saturday is a travesty. He then challenges Rhodes to a match on Saturday. The announce team says they haven’t heard anything about Rhodes retiring and that the match has been booked. They then run down the rest of the card for Double or Nothing on Saturday.

A video package highlighting the rivalry between the Inner Circle and Matt Hardy is aired. Hardy calls the members of the Inner Circle selfish individuals and tells them to prepare to be obsolete. This leads us into the main event of the night between Sammy Guevara and Matt Hardy as we head into a commercial break.

Match 5: Sammy Guevara vs. Matt Hardy
The announce team bring up the fact that we haven’t seen Adam Page and the Young Bucks in months as this match starts. Hardy goes on the early offensive as the match heads out to the floor where Hardy sends Guevara into the railing and crushes his head into the ring post. Guevara then counters the Twist of Fate and connects with a kick to the back of Hardy’s head. Guevara then takes Hardy out on the floor as we head into another picture in picture commercial break. During the break, Guevara sends Hardy into the ring post and crushes Hardy’s head just as Hardy had done to him.

We return as Hardy regains control of the match by sending Guevara into the turnbuckle before leveling him with a clothesline. Hardy hits the Side Effect for a near fall and Guevara comes back with a slam and a near fall of his own. Guevara counters another Twist of Fate and connects with a series of kicks for another near fall. Hardy rolls out of the way of a Shooting Star Press and finally connects with a Twist of Fate, but Guevara kicks out of the pin attempt. Hardy then takes off Guevara’s left shoe and begins biting his foot but Guevara connects with a knee for another near fall. Guevara then hits a springboard cutter for another two count. Guevara then tries for another Shooting Star Press, but Hardy gets the knees up for a near fall. Hardy hits another Twist of Fate to finally pick up the pin fall.

After the match, Hardy goes out and grabs a chair as the rest of the Inner Circle appear on the big screen. They have Kenny Omega tied up to the goal post at TIAA Bank Field but they are surprised by the Young Bucks, who leap at them from the stands. Matt Hardy joins the fray as the two sides battle it out. Adam Page then runs a hundred yard dash to join in as The Elite chases off the Inner Circle. The two sides share some parting words as Page walks off by himself and the go home show of Dynamite before Double or Nothing comes to a close.
