4/22/20 AEW Dynamite Recap

The show opens with Cody going over all of the other guys in the AEW TNT Championship Tournament. He then asks who he is. He asks if he is comfortable being the three-star match general and in his current role. He says critics will move the goal posts, but that’s okay. He says at barely a year old, they have added another major championship and there is plenty of will in the tournament and it’s time to find out who has the most of it.

Tony Schiavone and Chris Jericho are on commentary, and they run down the card for the show.

Match #1 – AEW TNT Championship Tournament Quarterfinal Match: Darby Allin vs. Sammy Guevara
Guevara dives onto Allin before the match officially begins. Guevara slams Allin into the barricade a few times and grabs a ladder. Guevara places the ladder across the barricade and apron and slams Allin into the barricade again. Guevara puts Allin on the ladder and then connects with a dive from the top as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Guevara tosses Allin into the ring and the bell rings. Guevara goes for the cover, but Allin kicks out. Guevara stomps Allin’s head into the mat a few times and takes him to the corner. Guevara delivers a few shots and sets Allin up top. Guevara climbs, but Allin fights back and hangs Guevara upside down in the ropes. Allin applies a reverse ankle lock in the ropes and then drops him to the mat. Allin goes after Guevara’s ankle, but Guevara comes back with a springboard back elbow. Guevara goes for the cover, but Allin kicks out. Allin comes back and applies an ankle lock, but Guevara kicks his way free. They brawl on the mat and fight to their feet. Guevara delivers a spinning back fist and then kicks Allin in the face. Guevara goes for the cover, but Allin kicks out as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Allin has Guevara on the floor and goes for a dive, but Guevara moves and Allin hits the barricade. Guevara puts Allin back into the ring and goes up top. Guevara hits a 630 splash and goes for the cover, but Allin grabs the ropes. Guevara delivers a knee to the midsection, but Allin comes back with a Stunner and comes off the ropes. Guevara catches him and goes for a knee strike, but Allin dodges it and gets Guevara in the Last Supper pin and gets the win.
Winner: Darby Allin

A promo from Matt Hardy airs. He says he laid out a proposition to Chris Jericho a fortnight ago when he invited Jericho to the Hardy Compound to face him in the Elite Deletion. He says he did not hear a word from Jericho, but saw an episode of The Bubbly Bunch. He says he saw the fear in Jericho when he spilled the juice that is orange. He says Guevara was the only one to mention his name, and challenges Guevara to Elite Deletion. He says Jericho doesn’t know how to handle his broken brilliance. He tells Jericho to talk to another Matt Hardy, and transitions into a regular version of himself. He says Jericho went after the pillars in AEW and he cannot let it happen. He calls AEW a platform for the future and he is going to protect it. He says he will kick everyone’s ass in The Inner Circle until he gets to Jericho.

A vignette of Taz going over Kenny Omega’s moves airs. He talks about Omega’s V Trigger and Snap Dragon Suplex.

Match #2 – Singles Match: Kenny Omega vs. Alan Angels
Angels connects with a quick kick and then they lock up. Omega takes Angels down and applies a front face-lock. Angels gets free and applies a hammer-lock, but Omega turns it into a side headlock. Angels sends him off the ropes, but Omega drops him with a shoulder block. Omega goes for the Snap Dragon, but Angels gets free. Omega connects with an elbow and then chops Angels and kicks him in the midsection. Omega delivers a headbutt and goes the Snap Dragon, but Angels bites his fingers and takes Omega down. Angels connects with a back senton and goes for another, but Omega gets his knees up. Omega delivers a back-breaker and goes for the cover, but Angels kicks out. Omega chops Angels into the corner and delivers more shots and elbows. Omega takes Angels to another corner, but Angels turns it around and drives his shoulder into Omega a few times. Omega comes back and delivers a clothesline, but Angels rolls to the apron. Angels drapes Omega over the ropes and then trips him up with the ring skirt.
Angels delivers a dropkick and goes for the cover, but Omega kicks out. Angels delivers a few rights and lefts and goes up top. He goes for a stomp, but Omega dodges. Angels connects with a few shots and delivers an enzuigiri. Angels comes off the ropes, but Omega dodges and delivers a Snap Dragon. Omega delivers the V Trigger and goes for the cover, but Angels kicks out. Omega delivers a power bomb and delivers another V Trigger and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Kenny Omega

A vignette for Scorpio Sky airs. He talks about how he discovered wrestling and about how he always wanted to be a professional wrestler. He talks about how his mom was an inspiration for him, and how he fought through a major back injury to keep his career going. He talks about receiving all of the praise, but always being told that there wasn’t a spot for him. He says December 2017 was when SCU was formed, and that was his final chance.

Footage from the Road to the TNT Championship YouTube show airs. It is the clip of Dustin Rhodes telling Cody that he will retire from AEW if he loses to Kip Sabian tonight.

Footage from Being the Elite Episode 200 airs. Matt Jackson defeated Nick Jackson in a Falls Count Anywhere Match on the episode.

Match #3 – Singles Match: Jimmy Havoc vs. Orange Cassidy (w/Chuck Taylor and Trent)
Havoc attacks Cassidy before the bell and beats him down in the corner. The bell rings and Havoc continues the attack. He takes Cassidy’s jacket off and chokes him with it. Havoc delivers a chop and then chokes Cassidy with his shirt. Havoc tosses Cassidy to the outside and slams him into the barricade. He crotches him over the barricade and delivers a chop. Havoc suplexes Cassidy to the floor and delivers another chop. Havoc slams Cassidy into the ring post and delivers another chop. Havoc smacks Cassidy in the back and tosses him back into the ring. Havoc stomps on Cassidy’s hand and chokes him. Havoc sends Cassidy to the corner and charges, but Cassidy gets his boot up. Havoc comes back with a Death Valley Driver and goes for the cover, but Cassidy kicks out. Havoc drops Cassidy with a clothesline and begins joint manipulation. Havoc backs Cassidy into the corner and bites his hand. Havoc bites Cassidy’s other hand and then puts them in his pockets. Havoc delivers a few more shots, but Cassidy comes back with a dropkick.
Cassidy sends Havoc to the floor and takes him out with a dive. Cassidy gets Havoc back into the ring and takes him out with a cross-body. Cassidy delivers a DDT and goes for the cover, but Havoc kicks out. Havoc backs Cassidy into the corner and puts him up top. Havoc delivers an uppercut and climbs, but Cassidy trips him up and sends him to the mat. Cassidy connects with a lazy splash and goes for the cover, but Havoc kicks out. They exchange shots and then Cassidy takes Havoc down. Penelope Ford gets on the apron, but Chuck Taylor pulls her down. Kip Sabian runs out and takes out taylor and Trent with a dive. Ford goes for a dive on Cassidy, but he dodges it. Cassidy grabs Havoc and gets a crucifix pin for the win.
Winner: Orange Cassidy
-After the match, Havoc and Sabian attack Cassidy before Taylor and Trent make the save.

A promo from MJF’s airs. He says we are going through a pandemic and the pandemic he is referring to is that fact that he hasn’t been wrestling on Dynamite. He says the reason why is because he got a hang-nail during his last appearance on Dynamite. He says the injury recently became life-threatening, but he will be back and he will become the AEW World Champion.

Match #4 – Singles Match: Wardlow vs. Lee Johnson
They lock up and Wardlow drops Johnson with a knee to the midsection. Wardlow picks Johnson up, but Johnson gets free and delivers a dropkick. Johnson comes off the ropes, but Wardlow picks him up and slams him to the mat. Wardlow tosses Johnson across the ring, and then does it again. Wardlow goes for another toss, but Johnson gets free and delivers a few shots. Wardlow comes back and tosses Johnson into the corner and drives his shoulder into his midsection. Wardlow delivers a knee to Johnson’s face and then delivers the F-10 and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Wardlow

A new “Join the Dark Order” vignette airs. Mr. Brodie Lee appears and talks to the man in the video. He thanks the man for joining him and asks him the basic questions like height and weight. He asks if the guy played college football, and they guy says yes. He says Evil Uno told him the guy is a hard work, but he hasn’t been rewarded for it. Lee offers the guy the success and the power of strength in numbers. He slides a mask to the guy and tells him that he is one of them and is the Dark Order.

Match #5 – Singles Match: Mr. Brodie Lee vs. Justin Law
Lee takes Law to the corner and delivers a few chops. Lee tosses Law across the ring and delivers a superkick. Lee delivers a suplex and then follows with a half-and-half suplex. Lee chops Law in the corner again and then connects with a hip attack. Lee slams Law to the mat and then drops him with a discus lariat and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Mr. Brodie Lee
-After the match, Lee leaves the ring and stares at Marko Stunt at ringside. Lee smirks at him and walks away.

Best Friends and Orange Cassidy are interviewed backstage. They talk about Penelope Ford almost costing Cassidy the match earlier and Trent says they will fight Kip Sabian and Jimmy Havoc.

Next week: Marko Stunt vs. Mr. Brodie Lee, and the semifinals of the AEW TNT Championship Tournament with Cody vs. Darby Allin and Lance Archer vs. the winner of tonight’s main event.

A new episode of The Bubbly Bunch airs. This episode focuses on the rest of the group trying to cheer up Sammy Guevara. They have a flim-flam competition for a bottle of hand sanitizer and Jake Hager, Ortiz, and Santana picks Guevara as the winner. Jericho gets mad and throws the hand sanitizer at his phone.

A vignette for Jon Moxley airs. He returns to Dynamite next week.

Match #6 – AEW TNT Championship Tournament Quarterfinal Match: Dustin Rhodes (w/Brandi Rhodes) vs. Kip Sabian (w/Penelope Ford)
Rhodes applies a wrist-lock and takes Sabian to the mat. Rhodes drops a knee to Sabian’s arm, but Sabian comes back with a headlock. Rhodes gets free and runs the ropes, and then drops Sabian with an uppercut. Rhodes drops Sabian to the mat with an arm-drag and then sends him to the corner. Rhodes delivers a few chops and then connects with a back elbow. Sabian comes back with a few elbows after Ford grabs Rhodes’s boot. Sabian takes Rhodes down with a kick and goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out. Sabian chokes Rhodes over the ropes, and then Ford helps as well. Brandi walks around the ring and Ford lets Rhodes go. Sabian goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out again. Sabian applies a front face-lock, but Rhodes backs him into the corner as the show heads to a commercial.
Back from the break, Sabian has Rhodes on the mat and works over his knee. Sabian gets Rhodes to the corner and stomps on his knee. Sabian drops Rhodes with a dropkick and goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out. Rhodes comes back with a quick roll-up, but Sabian kicks out. Sabian sends Rhodes to the corner again, but Rhodes fights back. Rhodes goes for a scoop slam, but Sabian counters and takes Rhodes down. Sabian goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out. Sabian applies a rear chin-lock, but Rhodes fights back. Sabian sends Rhodes off the ropes, but Rhodes holds on and then rolls Sabian up for two. Sabian comes back with a clothesline and goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out again. Sabian takes Rhodes down with a snapmare and kicks him in the back. Sabian comes off the ropes, but Rhodes counters with a power bomb. Rhodes delivers a clothesline and then an uppercut. Rhodes delivers an atomic drop and then a bulldog. Rhodes takes Sabian down with a power slam and goes for the cover, but Sabian kicks out.
Rhodes charges at Sabian in the corner, but Sabian dodges and takes Rhodes down with a tornado DDT. Sabian goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out. Sabian delivers a series of right hands and then stomps on Rhodes. Brandi and Ford fight on the outside and then get into the ring as the referee is with Sabian. Brandi drops Ford with a Spear and then Rhodes takes Sabian down with Code Red and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Dustin Rhodes
