NXT TakeOver: XXV

Pre-Show:

The pre-show opens with highlights from the very first TakeOver back in 2014. Charly Caruso, Sam Roberts, and Pat McAfee are on the panel. They run down the card for tonight’s event. The video hype package for the match between Shayna Baszler and Io Shirai plays. Roberts says Shirai is more prepared than any of Baszler’s previous opponents and McAfee says he doesn’t know how anyone can stop Bazler.

The panel breaks down the Fatal Four-Way Ladder Match for the vacant NXT Tag Team Championship. Roberts says he thinks it is The Street Profits’s time, while McAfee picks The Forgotten Sons. The video hype package for the match between The Velveteen Dream and Tyler Breeze is shown. Roberts says Breeze has done nothing since he left NXT and came back and there is nothing he can do to hang with Dream. McAfee says he actually agrees with Roberts.

The video hype package for the match between Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole is shown. Tommaso Ciampa has joined the panel. Ciampa says he feels great and says he is cleared for non-contact activity. He says if anyone deserves to hold the title while he is away, it is Gargano. He says he will have his eyes on the title match tonight.

NXT TakeOver: XXV:

The show opens with highlights from previous TakeOver specials, and then transitions into hype videos for tonight’s event. Beth Phoenix, Mauro Ranallo, and Nigel McGuinness are on commentary.

Matt Riddle vs. Roderick Strong
Riddle applies a waist-lock and tosses Strong to the mat. Riddle sets up for the Bromission, but Strong makes it to the ropes. Strong drives Riddle into the corner and drives his shoulder into his midsection, but Riddle comes back with a trifecta of suplexes. Strong goes to the floor, but Riddle follows and they exchange strikes. Riddle delivers a flying forearm from the steps and puts him on the apron. Strong slams Riddle into the ring post and then drops him back-first onto the apron. Strong tosses Riddle into the ring and goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Riddle comes back with a series of rights and lefts, but Strong sends Riddle off the ropes and delivers a back-breaker. Strong goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Strong delivers right hands on the mat and drives his knee into Riddle’s back.
Strong drives his knee into Riddle and then wraps him around the ring post. Strong delivers right hands back in the ring and goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Riddle fights back with right hands and palm strikes and then rolls Strong up for a two count. Strong comes back with a kick and delivers an Olympic Slam. Strong goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Strong goes for a suplex, but Riddle counters with a brain buster. They exchange strikes and then Riddle drops Strong with a forearm. Riddle delivers an exploder suplex and then connects with the Broton. Riddle hits the Penalty Kick and goes for the cover, but Strong kicks out at two. Riddle kicks Strong in the chest more than a few times and then hits the GTS. Riddle suplexes Strong and goes for the cover, but Strong kicks out at two.
Strong comes back with an enzuiguri in the corner and then delivers a superplex. Strong goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Riddle fights back and they exchange shots. Strong kicks Riddle in the face and then delivers a knee strike. Strong delivers forearm shots and then slams Riddle to the mat. Strong goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Strong goes for the Strong Hold, but Riddle kicks him to the floor. Strong gets back into the ring, but Riddle hits him with a ripcord knee. Riddle hits the Final Flash knee strike and goes for the cover, but Strong kicks out at two. Strong comes back with a back-breaker and then power bombs Riddle. Strong goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Strong applies the Strong Hold and then drives his knee into Riddle’s back. Riddle transitions into the Bromission, but his back gives out. Riddle delivers elbow strikes and then hits the Brodaron and gets the pin fall.

Fatal Four-Way Ladder Match for the vacant NXT Tag Team Championship: Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan vs. The Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake) vs. The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) vs. The Undisputed Era (Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly)
The Era clear the ring pretty quickly. Burch and Lorcan come back and those four brawl for a bit. Lorcan lights them up with chops, but The Era send him to the floor. They send Burch to the floor as well and then O’Reilly grounds Dawkins with a knee. The Era grab a ladder, but Blake suicide dives and hits them with the ladder. Burch delivers an uppercut to Cutler and then everyone brawls on the floor. Dawkins goes up top and dives onto everyone. The Profits get the ladder in the ring and climb, but The Era cut them off. O’Reilly gets slammed onto the ladder by Blake. The Sons lay everyone out with the ladder, but Burch and Lorcan suplex The Sons and the ladder goes flying across the ring. The Profit get into the ring and take out Lorcan and Burch. Ford connects with a Frog Splash to Burch and then grab a ladder.
Dawkins places Blake on the ladder and then Ford leapfrogs onto Blake and the ladder. The Profits send Cutler into the ladder with a flapjack. The Era get back into the ring and take The Profits out. The Era slam Ford into the ladder with a German suplex and send Dawkins to the floor with a ladder shot. The Era set up the ladder and O’Reilly climbs as Fish takes care of everyone else. Fish begins to climb as O’Reilly plays defense now, but Blake power bombs O’Reilly into the ladder and Fish crashes to the mat. The Sons set the ladder over O’Reilly and Cutler climbs. O’Reilly grabs him and locks in a submission through the ladder. Blake attacks O’Reilly and the grabs Fish. Cutler comes off the ladder with a stomp to Fish’s chest. The Sons climb the ladder, but The Profits cut them off. Lorcan takes Cutler out with an uppercut and The Profits take Blake out with a top rope Blockbuster.
O’Reilly gets back into the ring, but Jaxson Ryker makes his way to the ring. Ryker power bombs O’Reilly into the ladder and then slams Burch to the mat with a chokeslam. Ryker sends Ford to the floor and then slams Fish to the mat. Dawkins climbs the ladder, but Ryker tips it over. Ryker slams the ladder into Dawkins repeatedly and then sends Lorcan into the ladder with a back body drop. Ford gets back into the ring, but Ryker drops him with a right hand. O’Reilly gets back into the ring and then everyone gangs up on Ryker and beats him down. They bash him repeatedly with a ladder and then brawl among themselves again. The Era hit Ryker with the ladder and send him to the floor and then Ford takes him out with a suicide dive. Lorcan takes him out as well and then The Era hit Dawkins with the ladder. Burch dropkicks the ladder into The Era.
Fish gets sent into the ring post by Burch and Lorcan and then they double team O’Reilly as well. Burch an Lorcan grab ladders and lay everyone out with them. They smash The Profits with them and then throw the ladder onto The Sons on the floor. Burch and Lorcan set the ladder up and begin to climb, but The Era cut them off. The Era set up another ladder and then they and Burch and Lorcan all climb. They brawl on the top of the ladders and The Sons get back into the ring. They shove the ladders over and all four men crash to the floor. Dawkins spears Cutler and Ford springboards onto the ladder and knocks Blake down and grabs the belts.

Io Shirai is backstage warming up. Candice LeRae walks up and asks if she is ready to go.

NXT North American Championship Match: The Velveteen Dream (c) vs. Tyler Breeze
They lock up and Dream applies a wrist-lock. Breeze counters into a hammer lock and goes for the Unprettier, but Dream shoves him away. Breeze backs Dream with a right hand and then delivers a knee strike. Breeze slams Dream to the mat and goes for the cover, but Dream kicks out immediately. Breeze sends Dream to the floor and runs the ropes, but Dream catches him with a right hand. Dream delivers a double ax handle from the top and then connects with a springboard moonsault. Dream goes for the cover, but Breeze kicks out at two. Breeze comes back and pulls Dream into the ring post and then wraps his leg around it. Breeze connects with a forearm shot and tosses Dream back into the ring. Dream rolls out and Breeze comes off the apron again, but Dream catches him with a right hand.
Dream gets Breeze back into the ring and goes for the Dream Valley Driver, but Breeze rolls through and locks in a single-leg crab. Dream makes it to the ropes and then he and Breeze exchange slaps. Breeze stomps Dream down into the corner and then dropkicks him to the floor. Breeze goes after him, but Dream meets him with a superkick. Dream slams Breeze’s head into the announce table repeatedly and then grabs Breeze’s cell phone and the title belt. Dream takes a selfie with Breeze and the belt, but Breeze comes back with the Supermodel Kick. They get back into the ring, but Dream takes him down with the Dream Valley Driver. Dream goes for the cover, but Breeze kicks out at two. Dream goes up top, but Breeze rolls to the apron. Breeze comes back with an enzuiguri and goes up top. Breeze comes down with a cross-body, but Dream rolls through and gets a two count.
Breeze goes for the Supermodel Kick, but Dream goes for Dream DT. Breeze gets free and connects with the Supermodel Kick and goes for the cover, but Dream kicks out at two. Breeze goes for the Unprettier, but Dream backs him into the corner. Dream connects with a back elbow and then kicks Breeze in the face. Dream comes off the ropes, but Breeze catches him with a dropkick. Dream delivers the Dream DT and goes for the cover, but Breeze kicks out at two. Dream goes up top, but Breeze cuts him off. Breeze pulls Dream down, but Dream tosses him across the ring. Breeze comes back with a knee strike and shoves Dream into the corner. Breeze goes for an enzuiguri, but Dream stays up top. Dream delivers the Unprettier to Breeze and goes for the cover, but Breeze kicks out at two. Dream goes up top and goes for the Purple Rainmaker, but Breeze gets his knees up.
Breeze delivers the Supermodel Kick in the corner and then hits the Unprettier. Breeze goes for the cover, but Dream kicks out at two. Breeze picks Dream up, but Dream rolls him up for two. Breeze connects with the Beauty Shot, but Dream rolls to the floor. Breeze goes after him, but Dream collapses into the table. Breeze gets into the ring to stop the referee’s count, but Dream tries to hit him with the title. Breeze stops him, but Dream hits the Dream Valley Driver and the Purple Rainmaker and gets the pin fall.
Winner and still NXT North American Champion: The Velveteen Dream
-After the match, Dream grabs Breeze’s phone and takes a selfie with it. Dream holds the title in the air as Breeze looks at him. Breeze takes his phone and Dream goes to leave. Breeze stops him and offers to take a selfie with him. Dream accepts and then leaves the ring after the picture.

NXT Women’s Championship Match: Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Io Shirai
Baszler quickly takes Shirai down and delivers a right hand, but Shirai comes back and takes Baszler to the corner. Shirai takes Baszler down with a snapmare and then slaps Baszler across the face. Shirai takes Baszler down again and delivers a delayed dropkick that sends Baszler to the floor. Shirai delivers a baseball slide dropkick and then tosses Baszler back into the ring. Shirai goes up top, but Baszler pulls her down to the mat. Baszler kicks Shirai in the arm and then stomps down on it. Baszler works over Shirai’s arm and goes for a cover, but Shirai kicks out at two. Baszler takes Shirai down again and delivers an elbow drop. Baszler continues to work over Shirai’s arm and then kicks her in the back. Baszler goes for the cover, but Shirai kicks out at two. Baszler tries to stomp on Shirai’s other arm, but Shirai dodges it.
Shirai comes back with a German suplex. Shirai delivers ax handle shots and then connects with the Tiger Fake Kick. Shirai delivers a missile dropkick and goes for the cover, but Baszler kicks out at two. Baszler fights back with forearm shots, but Shirai dodges the last one and locks in the cross-face submission. Baszler picks Shirai up and slams her down to break the hold. Baszler goes up top and picks Shirai up into an arm-bar. Shirai counters with a kick and then dropkicks Baszler to the floor. Shirai goes up top and connects with a moonsault. Shirai gets Baszler back into the ring and delivers a missile dropkick. Shirai delivers double knees in the corner and goes up top. Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir run to ringside, but Candice LeRae lays them out with a kendo stick. Baszler rolls Shirai up with a small package, but Shirai kicks out at two.
Baszler goes for Kirifuda Clutch, but Shirai gets free and connects with a palm strike. Shirai goes for the moonsault, but Baszler counters. Baszler goes for the Kirifuda Clutch, but Shirai rolls through and gets a two count. Baszler finally locks in the Kirifuda Clutch, and Shirai taps out after a long battle.
Winner and still NXT Women’s Champion: Shayna Baszler
-After the match, Shirai grabs a kendo stick and beats Baszler down with it. Shirai goes up top and connects with the moonsault. LeRae hands Shirai and chair and she moonsaults onto Baszler with the chair.

NXT UK TakeOver: Cardiff is announced for Saturday, August 31st.

NXT Championship Match: Johnny Gargano (c) vs. Adam Cole
They exchange quick moves and Cole goes for the Last Shot, but Gargano dodges it. Gargano takes Cole down and wrenches his neck and bars his arms. Gargano goes for a crucifix pin, but Cole gets free. Cole sends Gargano to the corner, but Gargano comes back with a hurricanrana. They battle to the floor and then Gargano takes Cole down with a senton. Gargano comes off the apron and stomps down onto Cole’s arm. Gargano tosses Cole back into the ring and slams his arm over the apron. Gargano goes for the cover, but Cole kicks out at two. Cole comes back with a kick, but Gargano catches him with an enzuiguri. Cole comes back and superkicks Gargano in the back of the leg and Gargano falls to the mat. Cole locks Gargano in a knee bar and then delivers a dropkick to Gargano’s knee. Cole stomps away on Gargano in the corner, but Gargano comes back with forearm shots.
Cole kicks Gargano’s knee again, but Gargano comes back with a power bomb as Cole comes off the ropes. Gargano connects with an enzuiguri and then the Slingshot Spear. Gargano goes for the cover, but Cole kicks out at two. Gargano takes Cole up top, but Cole gets free. Gargano comes off the ropes, but Cole catches him with a Backstabber. Cole goes for the cover, but Gargano kicks out at two. Cole puts Gargano in the Torture Rack and then delivers a Burning Hammer onto his knee. Cole goes for the cover, but Gargano kicks out at two. They exchange superkicks and Cole goes up top, but Gargano meets him with a superkick that sends him to the floor. Gargano goes after him, but they hit simultaneous superkicks on the floor. Both men get back into the ring at the nine count, and then Gargano drops Cole with the slingshot DDT. Gargano goes for the cover, but Cole kicks out at two.
Gargano stomps down onto Cole, but Cole rolls to the outside. Gargano goes after him, but Cole catches him with a kick to the knee. Cole delivers a neck-breaker on the floor and then another back in the ring. Cole goes for the cover, but Gargano kicks out at two. Cole comes off the ropes and goes after Gargano’s knee, but Gargano dodges and locks in the Gargano Escape. Cole gets free and locks in the Figure Four. Gargano rolls over and applies the pressure to Cole, but Cole makes it to the ropes. Gargano delivers elbow strikes, but Cole delivers right hands. Cole slams Gargano’s knee into the mat and takes off his knee pad. Cole stomps away on Gargano’s knee, but Gargano kicks him to the apron. Gargano catches Cole with the Impact DDT, but Cole rolls to the floor. Gargano goes for a suicide dive, but Cole catches him with a superkick.
Cole delivers Panama Sunrise from the apron and tosses Gargano into the ring. Cole goes for the cover, but Gargano kicks out at two. Cole goes for the Last Shot, but Gargano dodges it. Gargano goes for the Gargano Escape, but Cole counters and locks Gargano in it. Gargano gets free and hits the Last Shot on Cole. Gargano goes for the cover, but Cole kicks out at two. They exchange right hands and then turn it into forearms. Cole hits a Pump Kick, and then another, but Gargano comes off the ropes and drops Cole with a clothesline. Cole hits a superkick and comes off the ropes, but Gargano hits one as well. Gargano hits a reverse-rana, but Cole comes off the ropes and hits the Last Shot. Cole goes for the cover, but Gargano kicks out at two. Cole grabs a chair from under the ring and the referee stops him. Gargano goes for a suicide dive, but hits the referee.
Gargano superkicks the chair into Cole and rolls him back into the ring. He goes for the cover, but there is no referee. Gargano tosses the referee back into the ring and Cole motions to the back. No one comes out and Cole spikes Gargano in the ring and goes for the cover, but Gargano kicks out at two. Cole goes for the Last Shot, but Gargano collapses in the ring. Cole grabs Gargano, but Gargano locks in the Gargano Escape. Cole elbows Gargano’s injured knee and then kicks it as well. Cole goes up top and goes for Panama Sunrise, but Gargano rolls through for a two count. Cole hits Panama Sunrise this time and then hits the Last Shot and gets the pin fall.
Winner and new NXT Champion: Adam Cole
-After the match, the other members of The Undisputed Era come to the ring and hoist Cole in the air.
