Kevin Owens Returns on SmackDown – Takes Kofi Kingston’s Spot at Fastlane
Kevin Owens is back, and he’s on Smackdown…where he was handed Kofi Kingston’s WWE Championship match. As noted in our live coverage of the show, Smackdown opened with what was supposed to be a contract signing between Kingston and Daniel Bryan for Fastlane but was cut short by Vince McMahon. McMahon praised Kingston but said that he had a man more deserving and qualified for the shot before introducing Owens.
Owens has been off WWE TV since undergoing double knee surgery back in October. McMahon has now inserted himself into overruling two of his kids’ planned big championship matches in Kofi vs. Bryan at Fastlane and Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch at WrestleMania, where he suspended Lynch for sixty days and replaced her with Charlotte Flair. There has been speculation that Kingston would be Daniel Bryan’s WrestleMania opponent, but a recent rumor said Owens was in consideration for the spot too.
