2/6/19 WWE NXT Recap: Ryker in Action; Gulak vs. Riddle; Six-Woman Tag Main Event
The opening credits roll, and Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, and Percy Watson welcome us to the show. Johnny Gargano’s music hits and the NXT North American Champion makes his way to the ring.
The crowd chants “Johnny Champion” and Gargano says he likes the sound of that. He says it is great to be the NXT North American Champion and he has been on the long and winding road for years. Gargano says Johnny Wrestling is back, but he is interrupted by the NXT Champion, Tommaso Ciampa. Ciampa says he is not here to take away from Gargano’s moment, but to celebrate it. Ciampa says Gargano showed the entire world what he already knew: that he knew how to listen and follow the champ’s lead. Ciampa says they own the world and this is everything they used to talk about. Ciampa says this is their moment and holds his title in the air. Gargano says there is no “our moment” and the only reason he came to the stage at the end of TakeOver: Phoenix was to prove that he will never need Ciampa. Velveteen Dream’s music hits and he comes to the stage.
Dream says everything going on is cute, but tonight is not about Ciampa or Gargano. Dream says tonight is about the moment and man who took over TakeOver: Phoenix by just showing up. Dream says while they were finishing up their fairytale, he was winning the Worlds Collide Tournament and earning an NXT Championship match of his choosing. He gets in Ciampa’s face, but then tells him to back up. Dream says he is over Ciampa and he doesn’t want him. Dream gets into the ring and tells Gargano that he wants him. Gargano says while Dream was sitting in the crowd, Gargano was putting on another Match of the Year and winning the NXT North American Championship. Gargano says he also represented NXT in the Royal Rumble Match. Gargano says he is on top of the world and tells Dream that he will win. Dream says maybe Gargano will win, but the question he has is will it be Dream vs. Johnny Champion, or Johnny Jackass. Gargano leaves the ring and stands with Ciampa on the ramp. Ciampa backs away from him as Gargano stares at Dream.
We see that Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, and Kairi Sane will take on Shayna Baszler, Marina Shafir, and Jessamyn Duke later tonight. We also see that Drew Gulak will be action, too.
Match #1 – Singles Match: Jaxson Ryker (w/Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake) vs. Mansoor
They lock up and Ryker backs Mansoor into the corner. Ryker rakes Mansoor’s face and then drops him with a clubbing shot. Ryker delivers a few knee lifts and then sets him on the top rope. Ryker hangs him in the tree of roe and delivers forearms to his midsection. Mansoor comes back with a back elbow and comes off the ropes, but Ryker counters with a spear. Ryker slams Mansoor to the mat with No Remorse and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Jaxson Ryker
-After the match, Ryker slams Mansoor to the mat again before Cutler and Blake pull him away.
We see Ricochet in a photo shoot backstage and Cathy Kelley is trying to get a word, but is interrupted by The Undisputed ERA. Cole says Ricochet is a one-trick pony and she should be interviewing him instead. Ricochet walks up, but Cole says he is in the back of the line because the NXT North American Championship has Cole’s name all over it. Ricochet says he beat Cole for the title and challenges Cole to a match on next week’s show. Cole says he looks forward to it. Ricochet says whenever he sees the opportunity, he is coming back for his title.
We see that Gargano will defend the NXT North American Championship against Dream in two weeks.
Match #2 – Singles Match: Drew Gulak vs. Eric Bugenhagen
Bugenhagen takes Gulak down, but Gulak comes right back with a dropkick. Gulak kicks Bugenhagen in the face and then slams him into the ropes. Gulak delivers a chop and slams Bugenhagen into the turnbuckle. Gulak delivers a snap suplex and goes for the cover, but Bugenhagen kicks out. Gulak applies a rear chin-lock, but Bugenhagen fights to his feet. Bugenhagen slams Gulak into the corner and delivers forearm shots. Bugenhagen applies an abdominal stretch, but Gulak counters with an elbow. Gulak delivers a suplex and then locks in the Gu-Lock and Bugenhagen taps out.
Winner: Drew Gulak
-After the match, Gulak says he wrestles around the world representing 205 Live as the best submission specialist. He says he comes to NXT and he gets that as his opponent? He says he is insulted and challenges anyone in the back. Matt Riddle’s music hits and the Original Bro comes to the stage. Riddle says everyone in NXT sets the bar high and tells Gulak to get out of NXT or he will tap him out of it. Gulak tells Riddle to take his flip-flops off and make his day.
Match #3 – Singles Match: Drew Gulak vs. Matt Riddle
They battle into the ropes and Riddle is able to take Gulak down. They each go for submissions on the mat and Riddle takes the advantage. He goes for an arm-bar, but Gulak blocks it and applies an inverted waist-lock. Riddle picks Gulak up and slams him to the mat to break it. Riddle goes for the arm-bar again, but Gulak blocks it. Gulak escapes and applies a rear chin-lock. Riddle fights out and we have a stalemate. Gulak applies a head-scissors, but Riddle counters with a kick. Riddle delivers a senton and a forearm in the corner. Riddle goes for a second forearm, but Gulak counters with a dropkick. Gulak dropkicks Riddle again and applies a side-headlock. Riddle shoves him away, but Gulak comes back with a shoulder tackle. Gulak applies a rear chin-lock, and then drives his knee into Riddle’s upper back. Gulak turns it into a double shoulder-bar submission and then begins joint manipulation.
Gulak delivers a snap suplex and goes for the cover, but Riddle kicks out at two. Gulak goes back to a single shoulder bar/chin-lock combo, but Riddle fights to his feet. Riddle delivers palm strikes and then a suplex. Riddle kicks Gulak in the chest a few times, but Gulak blocks the last one and counters with a dragon screw leg-whip. Riddle comes back and locks in a sleeper through the ropes. He drags Gulak back into the ring, but Gulak delivers elbow shots. Riddle comes back with a German suplex and goes for the cover, but Gulak kicks out at two. Gulak comes back and locks in an arm-bar, but Riddle comes back with an elbow shot and a chop. They exchange shots now and Riddle delivers a power bomb and a knee strike. Riddle goes for the cover, but Gulak kicks out at two. Riddle delivers elbow strikes and locks in the Bromission and Gulak taps out.
Winner: Matt Riddle
-After the match, Gulak extends his hand for a handshake and Riddle accepts.
We see Baszler, Duke, and Shafir warming up backstage. The Six-Woman Tag Team Match is up next.
Match #4 – Six-Woman Tag Team Match: Io Shirai, Kairi Sane, and Bianca Belair vs. Shayna Baszler, Marina Shafir, and Jessamyn Duke
Belair and Baszler start the match and Baszler wrenches Belair’s arm. Belair fights back and does the same to Baszler. Baszker tags out to Shafir. Belair takes Shafir down and Duke tags in. Belair slams Duke to the mat with a face-buster and then Belair press alms Sane into Duke. Sane goes for the cover, but Duke kicks out at two. Duke backs Sane into the corner and Shafir tags in. Shafir delivers a kicl, but Sane counters with a slap to the chest. Sane delivers another chop and then a series of rights and lefts. Shirai helps out and they double-team Shafir for a bit. Sane delivers an ax kick and then applies a front face-lock. Shafir backs Sane into the corner and puts her up top. Shafir delivers forearm shots and climbs as well, but Sane kicks her away and delivers a headbutt. Baszler distracts Sane and Shafir slams Sane to the mat.
Baszler tags back in and goes for the cover, but Sane kicks out quickly. Baszler clubs Sane in the back and then slams her into the corner. Duke tags back in and delivers a knee strike to Sane. Sane fights back, but Duke keeps her grounded. Duke kicks Sane in the back and goes for the cover, but Sane kicks out again. Shafir tags in and drops Sane with a hip toss and then Baszler tags in. Baszler kicks Sane in the midsection and then delivers a forearm to her back. Baszler applies a single-leg submission and stomps on Sane’s head. Shafir tags in and goes for the cover, but Sane kicks out at two. Shafir applies a dragon sleeper, but Sane gets free. Duke tags in and stops Sane from making the tag. Sane tosses Duke to the floor, but Baszler makes the tag. Shirai tags in as well and drops Baszler with a dropkick. Shirai takes Shafir down and delivers double knees to Baszler and Shafir.
Shirai kicks Duke to the floor and delivers a springboard dropkick to Baszler and goes for the cover, but Baszler kicks out at two. Sane tags in and delivers the In-Sane Elbow to Baszler. Sane goes for the cover, but Duke and Shafir break it up. Sane tries to tag Shirai, but Belair tags in and drops Baszler with the KOD. Belair goes for the cover, but Duke and Shafir break it up. Shirai sends them both to the floor and Sane takes them out with a cross-body. Shirai tags in and delivers the moonsault on Baszler and gets the pin fall.
Winners: Io Shirai, Kairi Sane, and Bianca Belair
-After the match, Shirai and Sane celebrate, but Belair halfway celebrates and looks perplexed as the show comes to a close.
