12/28/16 NXT Recap: Three Title Matches and More from Japan

NXT opens with a preview of tonight’s main event: Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship, and then we see the usual NXT opening video and then head into the arena in Osaka, Japan, where Tom Phillips and Corey Graves welcome us to the show.

Match #1: Oney Lorcan vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas
Lorcan asks for a handshake, but Almas shoves him away. They tie up and Almas backs Lorcan into the ropes. Almas smacks Lorcan’s head upon the break and they tie up again. Almas applies a side-headlock and takes Lorcan down, but Lorcan gets free and takes Almas down himself and the men work into a stalemate. They tie up again and Almas applies another headlock. Lorcan shoves Almas into the corner and charges, but Almas leapfrogs over Lorcan. Lorcan sends Almas into the ropes, but Almas holds on an poses. Lorcan asks for another handshake, but Almas denies him again. Lorcan applies a headlock down on the mat, but Almas gets to his feet and runs the ropes. Almas delivers a dropkick to Lorcan and connects with a back elbow in the corner. Almas tosses Lorcan down to the mat and kicks him in the face. Almas goes for the cover, but Lorcan kicks out at two. Almas takes Lorcan to the corner and delivers a hard chop and then stomps away on Lorcan on the mat. Almas delivers another hard chop and then applies a headlock down on the mat. Lorcan fights back to his feet and delivers a dropkick to Almas. Lorcan slaps Almas in the face and delivers an uppercut. Lorcan goes for a suplex, bu Almas counters with a series of back elbows. Almas goes for a suplex now, but Lorcan elbows his way free. Almas flips over Lorcan and drives him down to the mat with an inverted neck-breaker and goes for the cover, but Lorcan kicks out at two. Almas picks Lorcan up, but Lorcan gets free and connects with a right hand. Lorcan smacks Almas a few times, but Almas comes right back with elbow strikes. Lorcan kicks Almas in the face and connects with an inverted exploder suplex. Lorcan puts Almas in the corner and connects with a series of hip attacks. Lorcan goes for a third, but Almas catches him and throws him into the turnbuckles. Almas connects with the double knees and goes for the cover, but Lorcan kicks out at two. Almas goes for the hammer-lock DDT, but Lorcan backs him into the corner. Lorcan backs away and charges, but Almas gets a boot to the face to stop him. Almas gets on the top rope, but Lorcan cuts him off. Lorcan connects with an exploder suplex from the top rope and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Oney Lorcan.

We see that Asuka will defend her NXT Women’s Championship against Nia Jax later tonight.

Match #2: Liv Morgan and Aliyah vs. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce
Liv and Billie start the match with a tie up. Billie goes behind and takes Liv down to the mat. Liv trips up Billie and goes for a cover, but Billie quickly kicks out. Liv rolls around with Billie down on the mat and eventually goes for the cover, but Billie kicks out at two. Aliyah tags in and she and Liv drop Billie with a double clothesline. Aliyah goes for the cover, but Billie kicks out again. Aliyah applies an arm-bar, but Billie overpowers her and tags in Peyton. Peyton sends Aliyah to the corner, but Aliyah counters and takes Peyton down with a dropkick. Aliyah applies a wrist-lock and takes Peyton down with an arm drag. Aliyah tries to send Peyton off the ropes, but Peyton holds on and delivers a back-breaker. Billie tags in and stomps away on Aliyah in the corner. Peyton tags back in and places her boot in Aliyah’s throat. Aliyah fights back, but Peyton slams her down to the mat. Billie tags back in and they double-team Aliyah with duel kicks to the midsection. Billie goes for the cover, but Aliyah kicks out. Billie applies a submission down on the mat, but Aliyah counters into a pin attempt. Billie kicks out and tags in Peyton. Peyton and Billie slam Aliyah down to the mat. Aliyah reaches out for Liv, but Peyton brings her down to the mat again. Billie tags in and she and Peyton double-suplex Aliyah down to the mat. Billie puts Aliyah in the corner and tags in Peyton. Peyton stomps away on Aliyah in the corner and then takes her down to the mat. Peyton applies a headlock down on the mat, but Aliyah fights to her feet. Peyton takes her down again and keeps the submission locked in. Aliyah fights up again, but Peyton slams her down to the mat. Billie tags in and takes Aliyah down with a fisherman’s suplex. Billie goes for the cover, but Aliyah kicks out. Billie delivers a headbutt and then knocks Liv down to the floor. Peyton tags in and she and Billie stomp away on Aliyah in the corner. Peyton slams Aliyah down to the mat and goes for the cover, but Aliyah grabs the rope to break up the pin attempt. Billie tags in and they go for a double-suplex on Aliyah, but she lands on her feet and tags in Liv. Liv takes down Peyton with a bulldog and delivers an STO to Billie. Liv goes for the cover, but Peyton breaks it up. Peyton kicks Aliyah in the face and tags in. Peyton slams Liv’s face into Billie’s knee and gets the pin fall.
Winners: Billie Kay and Peyton Royce.

We see that #DIY will put their NXT Tag Team Championship on the line next as we head to a break.

Match #3: NXT Tag Team Championship Match: #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) (c) vs. Akira Tozawa and Tajiri
The match begins with a handshake among the four men and Tozawa and Gargano start the match. Tozawa goes behind Gargano with a waist-lock, but Gargano counters into a wrist-lock. Tozawa gets free and Gargano backs away into the corner. They tie up and Tozawa goes for a wrist-lock and takes Gargano to his knees. Gargano gets free and trips up Tozawa. Gargano takes Tozawa down with a hip-toss, but Tozawa comes right back with one of his own. They each go for a kick to each other’s face, but both duck under and have a stalemate. Ciampa and Tajiri tag in. They tie up and shove each other away, and Tajiri spits the green mist in the air. They tie up again and Tajiri goes behind for a waist-lock. Ciampa counters into a wrist-lock, but Tajiri counters himself into a headlock. Ciampa gets free and applies the wrist-lock again, but Tajiri gets free for a stalemate. Tajiri applies a wrist-lock of his own and takes Ciampa down to the mat. Tajiri turns it into an arm bar submission and then applies a headlock. Ciampa sends Tajiri off the ropes and takes him down with a shoulder block. Ciampa runs the ropes, but both men exchange headlock take downs and have another stalemate. Tajiri takes advantage and tags in Tozawa. Tozawa comes off the top rope and takes Ciampa down. Ciampa comes back and overpowers Tozawa and tags in Gargano. Gargano takes Tozawa in the corner and tags in Ciampa, who delivers an uppercut. Ciampa slams Tozawa down to the mat and goes for the cover, but Tozawa kicks out. Ciampa applies a headlock down on the mat, but Tozawa gets to the ropes to break the hold. Tozawa comes back and rolls up Ciampa, but Ciampa kicks out at two. Tozawa kicks Ciampa in the head and tags in Tajiri. They send Ciampa off the ropes and then hip toss him down to the mat. Tajiri goes for a series of covers, but Ciampa kicks out every time. Tajiri elbows Ciampa in the back of the head and tags in Tozawa as we head to a break.
We’re back and Ciampa and Tozawa exchange chops. Tozawa sends Ciampa into the corner and charges, but Ciampa catches him and delivers a back-breaker. Ciampa goes for the cover, but Tozawa kicks out at two. Gargano tags in and drops a few knees to Tozawa’s back. Gargano delivers a back-breaker to Tozawa and goes for the cover, but Tozawa kicks out at two again. Gargano applies a headlock down on the mat and then delivers a series of left hands to the face of Tozawa. Tozawa tries to fight back, but Gargano keeps control and kicks Tozawa in the face. Gargano comes off the top rope, but Tozawa counters with a gut-buster. Gargano tags in Ciampa, who knocks Tajiri down to the floor. Ciampa charges at Tozawa, but Tozawa kicks him in the face and tags in Tajiri. Tajiri kicks Ciampa and then connects with the springboard back elbow. Tajiri kicks Gargano out to the floor and then kicks Ciampa in the face. Tajiri goes for the cover, but Ciampa kicks out. Tajiri kicks Ciampa and Gargano down to the floor and Tozawa takes them both out with a tope suicida. Tozawa tosses Ciampa back into the ring and delivers a forearm shiver in the corner. Tozawa suplexes Ciampa down to the mat and goes for the cover, but Ciampa kicks out at two. Tozawa goes for the German suplex, but Ciampa counters and tags in Gargano. Gargano spears Tozawa through the ropes and goes for the cover, but Tozawa kicks out at two. Gargano goes the brain buster, but Tozawa backs him into the corner and tags in Tajiri. Tajiri gets Gargano in the Tarantula submission and goes for a big kick, but Gargano ducks under and kicks Tajiri in the face. Gargano goes for the cover, but Tajiri kicks out at two. Tozawa gets the tag and he and Gargano exchange forearm shots. Gargano connects with an enzuiguri and Ciampa tags in. Ciampa delivers a series of German suplexes to Tozawa. Tozawa comes back and suplexes both Ciampa and Gargano. Tozaawa suplexes Ciampa again and goes for the cover, but Gargano breaks up the pin. Tajiri goes for a kick on Gargano, but Gargano ducks and kicks Tajiri in the face. Tozawa kicks Ciampa in the back of the head, but Ciampa comes back with a big clothesline and then delivers the back-breaker. Ciampa goes for the cover, but Tajiri breaks up the pin. Tajiri gets sent to the floor and Gargano and Ciampa kicks Tozawa in the face and get the pin fall.
Winners and still NXT Tag Team Champions: #DIY.
After the match, Gargano and Ciampa bow to show respect to Tozawa and Tajiri.

We are reminded of tonight’s main event: Samoa Joe defending the NXT Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura. But up next, Asuka defends the NXT Women’s Championship against Nia Jax.

Match #4: NXT Women’s Championship Match: Asuka (c) vs. Nia Jax
Asuka kicks Nia and then smacks her in the face. Nia tosses Asuka into the corner a couple times, but Asuka comes back and kicks her in the face. Nia counters and delivers a headbutt and then throws Asuma across the ring. Nia picks Asuka up, but Asuka counters with an octopus hold submission. Nia breaks free and pushes Asuka away, but Asuka comes back with a guillotine choke hold. Asuka kicks Nia in the midsection and comes off the ropes, but Nia counters with a spine-buster. Nia chokes Asuka over the bottom rope and then sends her into the corner. Nia splashes Asuka in the corner as we head to a break.
We’re back and Nia is still in control. She splashes Asuka in the corner again and Asuka collapses to the mat. Asuka fights back, but Nia takes her down with a headbutt. Nia slams Asuka down to the mat and goes for the cover, but Asuka kicks out at two. Nia applies a headlock down on the mat and then slams her down for good measure. Nia knees Asuka in the face and goes for the cover, but Asuka kicks out at one. Nia applies a submission down on the mat, but Asuka fights to her feet. Nia slams Asuka down to the mat again and then chokes her in the corner. Nia grabs Asuka and goes for a Samoan Drop, but Asuka fights out of it. Nia delivers a sidewalk slam and goes for the cover, but Asuka kicks out at two. Asuka fights back with rights and lefts and then delivers some spinning back-fists. Nia counters with a headbutt and then a big left hand. Nia delivers a series of right hands to Asuka down on the mat and then connects with an elbow drop. Nia goes for the cover, but Asuka kicks out at two. Nia applies a headlock down on the mat and then picks Asuma up and drops her again with a clothesline. Asuka comes back and applies a knee bar submission, but Nia gets free. Asuka delivers a series of right elbows, but Nia slams her down to the mat again. Nia charges at Asuka, but Asuka ducks and Nia goes through the ropes. Asuka kicks Nia in the face and then hip attacks Nia down to the floor. Asuka goes for another hip attack, but Nia catches her and slams her into the ring apron. Asuka tries to get back into the ring, but Nia catches her with a leg drop and sends Asuka back to the floor. Nia goes out after Asuka, but Asuka counters with a spin kick. Nia comes right back and throws Asuka into the ring apron. Asuka gets back into the ring at the eight count. Nia goes for the leg drop, but Asuka moves and kicks Nia a few times. Asuka connects with the spinning back fist and then takes Nia down with a hip attack. Asuka goes for the cover, but Nia kicks out. Nia grabs Asuka and goes for a power bomb, but Asuka counters and runs the ropes. Nia runs into Asuka and takes her down to the mat, but Asuka comes right back and applies an arm-bar submission down on the mat. Nia rolls over, but Asuka goes for the Asuka Lock. Nia backs Asuka into the corner, but Asuka holds on and locks in a sleeper hold. Nia grabs Asuka and delivers a power bomb and goes for the cover, but Asuka kicks out at two. Asuka comes back with a few spinning back fists and then delivers a German suplex. Asuka kicks Nia in the face and gets the pin fall.
Winner and still NXT Women’s Champion: Asuka.

We see that Buddy Murphy and Tye Dillinger will take on Elias Samon and Bobby Roode next week, as well as Ember Boom, Liv Morgan, and Billie Kay battling in a Triple Threat Match. We also see that #DIY will defend the NXT Tag Team Championship against TM-61.

Match #5: NXT Championship Match: Samoa Joe (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
Joe and Nakamura feel each other out and then Joe backs Nakamura against the ropes. Nakamura counters and gets Joe against the ropes, but Joe shoves him away. Nakamura catches Joe with a knee and then kicks Joe down in the corner. Nakamura delivers Good Vibrations two times and Joe rolls out of the ring. Joe drapes Nakamura over the middle rope and rakes his eyes as we head to a break.
We’re back and Joe backs Nakamura into the corner with lefts and rights. Joe takes Nakamura to the floor and delivers a hard chop. Joe rolls back into the ring to break the count and adjusts the ring steps to his liking. Nakamura fights back and slams Joe into the ring apron. Nakamura tosses Joe back into the ring and delivers a few right hands in the corner. Joe counters with a back elbow in the corner and then delivers an enzuiguri. Joe chokes Nakamura in the corner and rakes the bottom of his boot across Nakamura’s face. Nakamura comes back and delivers a shot to Joe’s midsection and then takes him to the corner. Nakamura delivers a few knee shots and then goes for a guillotine choke, but Joe fights out. Nakamura takes Joe down with a snap-mere suplex and then drops the knee into Joe’s face. Nakamura goes for another knee shot, but Joe catches him and drives him to the mat with a knee-buster. Joe stomps away on Nakamura, but Nakamura fights back with a few right hands. Joe sweeps Nakamura’s legs out from under him and then drives his knee into the side of Nakamura’s head. Joe applies a knee-bar submission down on the mat and then stomps away on Nakamura’s knee. Nakamura fights back with forearms, but Joe takes him down again and delivers a few chops and then an elbow drop. Joe goes for the cover, but Nakamura kicks out at two. Joe kicks Nakamura in the face and then locks in another knee bar submission down on the mat. Nakamura gets to the ropes to break the hold, but Joe comes right back with a few headbutts. Nakamura counters Joe with a knee strike and then kicks Joe in the back of the head. Nakamura drops Joe with a few right hands and then goes for a kick to the face again. Nakamura drives his elbow into Joe’s head in the corner and then delivers the knee strike. Nakamura goes for the cover, but Joe kicks out at two. Nakamura goes for the exploder suplex, but Joe counters and connects with an atomic drop. Joe drops Nakamura with a boot to the face and then connects with a senton. Joe goes for the cover, but Nakamura kicks out as we head to a break.
We’re back and Joe has a cross-face submission locked in down on the mat. Nakamura makes it to the ropes to break the hold and then takes Joe down to the mat. Nakamura goes for the arm-bar submission, but Joe blocks his attempt. Nakamura catches Joe with a few forearm shots and goes for a triangle submission, but Joe gets to the ropes to break the hold. Nakamura goes for the exploder, but Joe counters and kicks Nakamura in the knee. Nakamura shakes it off and connects with the exploder. Nakamura goes for Kinshasa, but Joe counters with a power slam. Joe goes for the cover, but Nakamura kicks out at two. Joe takes Nakamura to the corner and delivers a chop and then locks in the Coquina Clutch in the middle of the ring. Nakamura gets free, but Joe takes him down with a couple German suplexes. Joe goes for the cover, but Nakamura kicks out at two. Joe sets Nakamura up on the tope rope and then connects with an enzuiguri that sends Nakamura to the floor. Joe follows Nakamura to the floor and tries to slam him down onto the steep steps, but Nakamura counters and slams Joe face-first into the steps. Nakamura tosses Joe back into the ring, but Joe counters with a kick to Nakamura’s knee. Joe connects with a series of elbows, but Nakamura comes back with a few kicks and then knees Joe in the side of the face. Nakamura knees Joe in the back of the neck and then connects with the Kinshasa and gets the pin fall.
Winner and new NXT Champion: Shinsuke Nakamura.
After the match, Nakamura celebrates his title victory in the ring and then poses and bows to the fans in attendance as NXT comes to a close.
