11/2/16 NXT Recap: Dusty Classic Quarterfinal Matches Take Place

We see the NXT opening video and then go into the NXT Arena at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, where Tom Phillips and Corey Graves welcome us to the show.

We join Charly Caruso, who gives us an update on the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament. We will take a look at all four quarterfinal matches tonight. We take a look back to the NXT Live Event in San Jose, California this past Friday night for our first quarterfinal match.

Match #1: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Quarterfinal Singles Match: Roderick Strong (w/Austin Aries) vs. Shane Thorne (w/Nick Miller)
They tie up and Thorne goes behind with a waist-lock. Thorne turns it into a side-headlock and Strong gets free and applies a wrist-lock. Thorne flips out of it, but Strong keeps the advantage and runs the ropes. Thorne comes back with a heel kick that takes Strong to the mat. Thorne and Strong exchange wrist-locks and then Thorne takes Strong down with a kick and then connects with a standing moonsault. Thorne goes for the cover, but Strong kicks out at two. Aries distracts Thorne from the outside and Strong takes advantage. Strong slams Thorns down back-first into the top turnbuckle and Thorne goes out to the floor as we head to a break.
Back from the break, Strong is still in control in the ring. Strong backs Thorne into the corner and charges, but Thorne counters with a boot to Strong’s face. Strong comes back with a big chop and comes off the ropes, but Thorne counters with a dropkick. Thorne and Strong exchange forearm shivers and Thorne gains the advantage with the uppercut. Thorne delivers another uppercut in the corner and then charges at Strong, but Strong catches him and delivers a back-breaker. Strong goes for the cover, but Thorne kicks out at two. Strong takes Thorne to the corner and places him up top. Strong climbs as well and goes for a superplex, but Thorne fights out. Thorne hangs Strong in the ropes and delivers a double stomp from the top rope. Thorne goes for the cover, but Strong kicks out at two. Thorne runs the ropes, but Strong counters with a knee to the midsection. Strong takes Thorne down with a flapjack and goes for the cover, but Thorne kicks out at two. Strong picks Thorne up off the mat and delivers a series of forearm shivers and then a back elbow, but Thorne counters with a big clothesline. Thorne drops Strong with a Falcon Arrow and goes for the cover, but Strong kicks out at two. Thorne delivers a sit-out power bomb and goes for the cover, but Aries distracts the referee. Strong comes back and takes Thorne down and goes for the cover, but Thorne kicks out at two. Miller gets on the apron, but Strong dropkicks him to the floor. Thorne rolls up Strong from behind and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Shane Thorne.
TM-61 advances to the semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament.

Charly Caruso says we will head back to Full Sail to see the Quarterfinal Match between The Revival and #DIY.

We see that “Come Back for More” by Turnstile will be one of the official theme songs for NXT TakeOver: Toronto, and then see that Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe will have a contract signing for their match at the event on next week’s NXT.

Match #2: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Quarterfinal Match: #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) vs. The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder)
Dawson comes out on crutches and says he wants everyone to show him some common courtesy. He says he needs to address something. He says he just got off the phone with one of the WWE doctors and he has suffered a severe knee injury, which is possibly career-ending. He says he sprained his ACL and MCL and tore his patella in half. He says the doctor told him to stay home for a bit and he would be fine, but he said no and decided to come push through the pain and win the tournament with Wilder. He says the doctor begged him not to do that and so with the advice of his doctor, he and Wilder and forfeiting this match.
Winners via forfeit: #DIY.
Wilder tells Gargano and Ciampa to not act like they are upset. He says they know it is a golden ticket to the next round and they are being saved from the embarrassment of tapping out to The Revival again like they did in Brooklyn.
#DIY has advanced to the semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament.

We go backstage and see Cedric Alexander. He says his time in NXT so far has been a learning experience. He says he wants to personally thank Andrade “Cien” Almas for showing him that he will need to have a mean streak to survive, and he would like to thank Almas in the ring anytime, any place.

We see a mysterious vignette that lasts just a few seconds and ends with “The Return.”

We see that Parkway Drive’s “Devil’s Calling” will be one of the official theme songs of NXT TakeOver: Toronto.

We see Gargano and Ciampa backstage. Gargano says they are not surprised about what happened. Ciampa says their goal is to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and then they will win the NXT Tag Team Championship.

We go back to San Jose, California for our next match.

Match #3: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Championship Tournament Quarterfinal Match: Rich Swann and No Way Jose vs. The Authors of Pain (Akam and Rezar) (w/Paul Ellering)
Jose and Akam start the match for their teams. Akam backs Jose into the corner and delivers a big right hand to the midsection. Akam sends Jose to the other corner, but Jose goes over the top. Akam catches him, but Jose gets free and sends Akam to the floor. Akam gets back into the ring and drops Jose with a clothesline. Jose gets to his feet and rolls up Akam, but Akam quickly kicks out. Swann tags in and Akam gets taken down again and tags in Rezar. Rezar goes after Swann, but Swann keeps dodging him. Rezar lands a right hand, but Swann shakes it off and comes off the ropes. Rezar catches him in a bear hug. Swann gets free and delivers a dropkick. Rezar gets to his feet and charges at Swann, but Swann dodgers and Rezar goes to the floor. Akam goes to check on Rexar and Swann jumps onto both of them, but they catch him. Jose goes up top and dives and takes out Akam and Rezar. Swann and Jose gets back into the ring and dance as Ellering gives Akam and Rezar orders on the floor. Akam and Rezar get into the ring and double-team Swann and Rezar splashes him in the corner. Rezar chokes Swann with his boot and then chokes him over the bottom rope. Ellering gets involves and chokes Swann as Rezar pulls the referee away. Rezar goes for the cover, but Swann kicks out at two. Rezar picks Swann up and delivers a standing back-breaker and stares down Jose. Swann fights free and kicks Rezar in the face. Akam tags in and splashes down on Swann. Swann kicks Akam in the head a few times and tags in Jose. Jose drops Akam with a couple clotheslines and winds up and delivers a right hand to Rezar. Swann takes out Rezar on the outside and Jose battles with Akam in the ring. Jose picks up Akam and drops him with a TKO. Jose goes for the cover, but Akam kicks out. Swann tries to tag in, but Rezar slams him into the steel steps. Jose fights with Akam and Rezar tags in. Akam and Rezar drop Jose with the Last Chapter and Rezar gets the pin fall.
Winners: The Authors of Pain.
The Authors of Pain have advanced to the semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament.

We see that T.J. Perkins and Kota Ibushi will take on SAnitY in the final quarterfinal match up next.

We see the return vignette for Mickie James, and then are reminded that Mickie will challenge Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: Toronto. We are also reminded that Bobby Roode will go one-on-one with Tye Dillinger at the event.

We see that #DIY will face The Authors of Pain in the semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament on next week’s NXT.

Match #4: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Quarterfinal Match: T.J. Perkins and Kota Ibushi vs. SAnitY (Sawyer Fulton and Alexander Wolfe) (w/Nikki Cross and Eric Young)
Wolfe and Ibushi start the match for their team and Wolfe applies a headlock on the mat. Ibushi comes back with some quick kicks and then takes Wolfe down with a dropkick. Ibushi sends Wolfe into the ropes, but Wolfe comes back with a kick of his own. Perkins tags in, but Wolfe catches him. Perkins gets free and connects with a cross-body and then knocks in the knee-bar. Wolfe gets free and tags in Fulton. Perkins catches Fulton in the knee-bar, but he tags in Wolfe quickly. Ibushi tags back in and Perkins takes Wolfe down with a dropkick as we head to a break.
Back from the break, Ibushi and Perkins are still in control. Perkins dropkicks Fulton to the floor and dropkicks Wolfe in the ring. Ibushi hits the triangle moonsault on Wolfe and Perkins launches onto Fulton, but Fulton catches him and slams him onto the apron twice. Back in the ring, Fulton and Wolfe double-team Perkins and work him over with frequent tags. Fulton splashes down onto Perkins and goes for the cover, but Perkins kicks out at two. Fulton stands on Perkins’ back and then applies a bear hug. Perkins delivers some elbows, but Wolfe tags back in. Wolfe and Fulton try to double-team Perkins, but Perkins gets free and tags in Ibushi. Ibushi delivers kicks to Wolfe and then delivers a standing moonsault. Ibushi goes for the cover, but Fulton breaks it up. Perkins takes down Fulton with a dropkick and Ibushi goes for the Golden Star power bomb and connects as Young and Cross distract the referee. Fulton drops Ibushi with a clothesline and then tags in. Wolfe and Fulton slam Ibushi down to the mat and Fulton gets the pin fall.
Winners: SAnitY.
SAnitY advances to the semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament.

NXT comes to a close with SAnitY standing tall at the top of the ramp.
