7/7/16 WWE Smackdown Results

– The Big News:

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton was announced for SummerSlam during a taped studio segment. The Canadian version of the show that aired Wednesday had no such mention of the match or Lesnar at all.

– Show Recap:

SmackDown started with a similar cold open to last week with quick segments from backstage to set up the show. First, they showed the Club hanging out and announced they’d address Cena, Enzo and Cass later tonight.

Elsewhere, Chris Jericho checked himself out in a mirror and said Sami Zayn was going to get “it” tonight. He then asked a stagehand if he’d seen a blue scarf anywhere. (The SmackDown music was too loud and it completely distracted from Jericho’s promo.)

They cut to Sami Zayn who said Jericho will have to settle for being second best in the world after he loses tonight.

And finally, Seth Rollins ran into Jey Uso upon entering the building. Rollins claimed Jey’s entire family travel in packs, or at least what’s left of them.

Jey threatened to shut up Rollins. Rollins didn’t want a match with Jey because he knew he would have to deal with Jey and Jimmy and Jermaine and Michael and Tito. Jey said they weren’t the Jackson 5 and it would be one-on-one. Rollins accepted.

Jerry Lawler was back on commentary with Mauro Ranallo and Byron Saxton. No mention of where he was or what he did with David Otunga.

JoJo was in the ring about to introduce someone, but Dean Ambrose’s music hit and he came out. He apologized for interrupting, but wanted to try being a ring announcer like Howard Finkel, except taller and with hair. He introduced the opening match.
Seth Rollins beat Jey Uso via pinfall

Ambrose introduced Seth “Scumbag” Rollins as “217 pounds, and that’s just his ego,” and born with a stick up his butt.

Some “Let’s Go Rollins” chants started the match, followed by chants for Jey Uso. Ranallo let us know that these two had a singles match on SmackDown almost exactly a year ago to this date.

During the match, Ambrose got back on the mic and read off some cue cards. He let the crowd know where they can buy his newest merchandise, as well as some Rollins ice cream bars, but warned that they taste like crap. This distracted Rollins, and Jey sent him to the outside.

Ambrose announced that 5 minutes had elapsed in the match (it was actually 2 minutes) and said it felt like a good time to go to commercial. After the break, Rollins took control after a couple of flying knee strikes.

Rollins went to the top when Ambrose got on the mic again, announcing that a 1997 Ford pickup truck was parked in a fire lane.

This led to a comeback by Jey Uso, who hit a pop-up Samoan drop for two. They each countered a bunch of moves until Jey hit a superkick. He went up for a splash, but Rollins got his knees up and hit a Pedigree for the win.

Rollins yelled at Ambrose to announce him as the winner. Ambrose stood on the table, called Seth “Slimy” Rollins a human root canal, and announced him as “the winner and STILL a jackass.” Rollins seemed content with this.

Ambrose jumped in the ring, but Rollins ran out. Ambrose claimed he was just going to raise Seth’s hand, but instead he raised the WWE Title belt, just like he would at Battleground.
Zack Ryder beat Sheamus via pinfall

Ryder has a new entrance music, which is just a remix of his old theme. Ryder won in 2-3 minutes with a flying elbow drop. Huh.

Afterwards, Tom Phillips caught up to Ryder on the stage and asked him what’s next. Ryder said Advil, ice packs and getting his back adjusted.

Ryder wanted to regain the U.S. title, because being champion meant you were the best at that moment, and the current champion has no respect. He officially challenged Rusev. Sheamus walked up the ramp and yelled at Phillips while Ryder left.

They aired a promo for Baron Corbin.

Backstage, generic interview man asked Rusev about Ryder’s challenge. Rusev responded, “What’s the matter with that man?” Rusev called out Ryder to challenge him face-to-face on Raw, and maybe Ryder would prove that not all Americans are cowards. Either way, Rusev would prove that all Americans are losers.
Becky Lynch vs. ???

Becky Lynch made her entrance for a match, but was attacked from behind by Natalya. Natalya tossed her into the barricade and applied the Sharpshooter. Some referees yelled at her to stop and she eventually did. The crowd booed and she walked off.

They replayed Xavier Woods walking out on Kofi Kingston and Big E on Raw. They followed by showing Woods’ response in his interview with Michael Cole on the website.

Woods said we don’t know anything about the Wyatt compound or how many Wyatt family members there are. Woods said he wasn’t happy with the decision made by his brothers, but he would be with them at the compound.

The Club confronts Enzo & Cass

Enzo and Cass came out first. Enzo did his usual promo. Cass said what they did on Raw wasn’t about saving John Cena or about any personal issues with the Club, it was to send a message.

Cass said if the Club thought they could beat up Cena every week, what was stopping them from doing that to everyone else? Cass was not good here. Thankfully, he was quickly interrupted by the Club.

Styles said they were interrupted on Raw while doing the thing they love most — beating up John Cena. He said Cena wasn’t here and wondered where he was, to which Gallows responded, “He got beat up!”

They made jokes about going for dessert, including Karl Anderson wanting “Asian dessert,” and going to beat up Cena again.

They also threatened to beat up Enzo and Cass. Cass called out Styles, but Styles wanted Enzo. Enzo said the Club thinks they’re “too sweet,” but they’re definitely not original, and not even a good remix. Cass finished off by calling them soft.

The Club and Enzo were all entertaining here. I liked Enzo’s not-so-subtle line about the Club being unoriginal.
AJ Styles (w/The Club) beat Enzo Amore (w/Big Cass) via pinfall

Enzo tried a dive on the Club, but caught the top rope and basically crashed to the mat. He just barely caught Styles and Gallows on the way down. They actually showed a replay, which Lawler laughed at.

Anderson tried a distraction, but Cass pulled him off the apron. Then Cass and Gallows gave each other a big boot. This led to Styles winning with the Styles Clash. Match was about 5-6 minutes.

Backstage Skits

Jericho was still looking for his scarf. He ran into Kevin Owens, who was wearing it. Owens wanted to buy one for his wife. Jericho took it back, claimed it cost $750 and was made of “cashmina,” which Owens called a made up word.

The scarf was dirty so Jericho wanted money from Owens to pay for dry cleaning. Owens gave him some coins, most of which dropped to the floor, and a Jolly Rancher. They bantered back and forth some more and Jericho called him a stupid idiot. This was funny.

In the locker room, Dolph Ziggler, Kalisto, Titus O’Neil and the Vaudevillains watched a replay of Miz and Maryse getting food dumped on them on Raw. Miz and Maryse walked in at that moment, of course.

Ziggler told Miz that women shouldn’t be in the men’s locker room. Miz said Maryse can be with him if she wants and Ziggler responded, “I wasn’t talking about her.”

Miz wanted to know who tossed potato salad at Maryse and they all took responsibility. Miz was mad so Kalisto challenged him to a fight. Maryse accepted.

Kalisto got a bunch of near falls but Miz won in about 7 minutes with the Skull Crushing Finale. Perfectly fine match.

Sasha Banks Interview

Backstage, Sasha Banks told Renee Young that the boss always takes care of business. Of course, Charlotte and Dana Brooke happened to be nearby and interrupted.

Brooke said Banks got lucky and challenged her to a match on Raw. Banks wanted the match now, but Charlotte said that the “Taco Bell Chihuahua” doesn’t make the rules.

Charlotte claimed Banks got her jewelry from the dollar store, whereas she wears diamonds. Charlotte then said, “I’m like the LeBron James.” She didn’t say that she was the LeBron James of wrestling, just that she was “the LeBron James.” This was dumb.

They aired the same Darren Young and Bob Backlund skit from Raw. There was also a product placement skit with Golden Truth.
The Big Announcement

They cut to a studio segment with Scott Stanford, Corey Graves, and Booker T where the announcement was made that Brock Lesnar vs. the returning Randy Orton will happen at August’s SummerSlam. In briefly mentioning their history, Graves noted Lesnar and Orton’s background breaking in together in OVW. No mention of UFC or the fight this weekend.
Sami Zayn beat Chris Jericho via pinfall

Kevin Owens joined commentary. Owens said he didn’t want to be like Ranallo when he grows up. Lawler advised him not to grow up, which is an interesting line for someone who just got arrested.

Toward the end of the match, Zayn hit a flip dive to Jericho and smacked the table in excitement. Owens didn’t appreciate that and tossed his drink in Zayn’s face. Zayn then launched Jericho into Owens.

Back in the ring, Zayn hit Jericho with an exploder into the turnbuckle. As he set up for the Helluva Kick, Owens jumped on the apron, so Zayn kicked Owens instead of Jericho.

Jericho went for the Walls but Zayn reversed into a roll up for the pinfall win.

Afterwards, Jericho gave him a Codebreaker, and Owens followed up by attacking Zayn and giving him the pop-up powerbomb.

– Final Thoughts:

This was a perfectly enjoyable show.
