– WWE NXT Results & Recap 7/22/15 (Balor / Owens Contract Signing)
Full Sail University, Winter Park, FL
The show opens with the arrival of the new NXT champion, Finn Balor, as he makes his first appearance at Full Sail University since winning the title. Greg Hamilton is in the ring as the fans chant “You Deserve It.”
Balor said that wrestling all over the world for the last 15 years has come with making a lot of tough decisions. One of those decisions was whether of not Balor should come to NXT. Balor declared that his title win over Kevin Owens made all of his sacrifices worth it.
Hamilton brings up TakeOver: Brooklyn, which gets some boos from the Full Sail crowd since this will be the first time this event is taken abroad. Balor puts over Owens’ path of destruction, but reaffirms that he is walking in an out of TakeOver as NXT champion.
A contract signing for the NXT title match at TakeOver is announced for later in the broadcast.
– Backstage: Devin Taylor interviews Eva Marie about her in ring return. Eva thanks William Regal for the opportunity. She said this is her dream and that the NXT universe has a misconception about “Miss All Read Everything.” She mentions her training over the last several months and says it’s time to open our eyes because we’re going to like what we see.
– Eva Marie vs. Cassie
Eva struts to the ring in a full length sequin red robe with black feather trim as Cassie is already in the ring. The bell ring and Cassie quickly locks up Eva with a wrist lock. Eva cartwheels out and reverse into a wrist lock of her own. Dueling chants of “Let’s Go Eva” and “Eva Sucks” fills Full Sail.
Cassie connects with a spin kick in the corner and follows up with a spin kick to the lower back. Eva comes back with a vertical suplex. Eva connects with a running boot and a senton. Cassie drops Eva with a series of spinning kicks, but gets sent throat first into the ropes. Eva hits the Sliced Bread #2 for the three count.
Winner: Eva Marie
Backstage: William Regal is on the phone and he is ecstatic until he sees Tyler Breeze laying across his desk. Breeze demands something big for TakeOver since he’s not in the NXT title match. Regal says he’s working on it and Breeze says it better be something good.
– Baron Corbin vs. ???
Sorry I didn’t get the other guy’s name. There was no time for the commentary team to mention it because he immediately walked into an End of Days and got pinned.
Winner: Baron Corbin
– Samoa Joe vs. Mike Rallis
Rallis was the aggressor early on. Joe responds with a flurry of punches that rocks Rallis. Joe turns Rallis inside out with an elbow. From there we see the usual arsenal of right hands to the head, enzuigiri, turnbuckle splash, and boots to the head. A STJoe and Muscle Buster after a small comeback from Rallis is all she wrote.
Winner: Samoa Joe
Samoa Joe vs. Rhyno was announced for the August 5th episode of NXT.
Backstage: Emma and Dana Brooke laugh at the idea that Bayley is coming to hurt her when she said “I’m not coming for a hug.” Emma reminds us that she broke Bayley’s hand and now she will break her childish spirit. Big hug from the heel duo ends with Dana patting Devin Taylor’s head.
– Bayley vs. Emma
Emma blindsides Bayley for the early advantage and works over the injured hand. Bayley comes back with a bulldog, but Emma attacks the hand again. Bayley is in a lot of pain until she comes back with some double ax handles and a back elbow off the second rope.
Both women get laid out with a double clothesline which prompts Dana to get involved and attack Bayley’s injured hand. The referee ejected Dana from ringside. After some reverse roll ups, Bayley wins with the Belly to Bayley.
Winner: Bayley
Post Match: Bayley declared her intentions to become NXT Women’s Champion. However, she feels that in order to accomplish that goal, she needs to beat someone she has never beaten and challenges Charlotte to a match.
Backstage: Dasha Fuentes interviews about the Diva’s Revolution and Bayley’s challenge. Charlotte was emotional about her debut on the main roster. She also accepted Bayley’s challenge which brings in Dana Brooke.
Dana says Charlotte was only given a chance on the main roster because of her last name and plans to make a name for herself by beating her. Charlotte declared that she will wrestler Dana next week and Bayley the week after.
– The Vaudevillians vs. Angelo Dawkins & Sawyer Fulton
This was pretty much a by the numbers affair. Simon Gotch and Angelo Dawkins kick things off. Faulton quickly tags in and they get they heat on Gotch. Adien English gets in for the hot tag, throws a few knees, poses for a bit, and the villians hit the Whirling Dervish for the 1-2-3. During the match, Blake, Murphy, and Alexa bliss
Winners: The Vaudevillians
– The Vaudevillians vs. Blake & Murphy for the NXT Tag Team Titles is announce for next week. The champ along with Alexa Bliss mockingly celebrated The Vaudevillians’ victory.
– Contract Signing
GM William Regal handles the proceedings between champion and challenger. Full Sail is not happy about being passed over the next TakeOver event and Kevin Owens reminds them of this by mentioning Brooklyn to throw salt on the wound.
Owens calls Balor the underdog despite being champion. He goes on to say that losing to Balor in Japan was a fluke and he will regain the title in Brooklyn, which Full Sail loved. Balor says he will shove those words down Owens’ throat and signs the contract. Owens signs and Regal signs making it official.
Owens gets dirty by throwing the table at Balor and gets in a few shots before having the tide turned on him. Regal tries to break it up and gets punches right in the face by Owens for his troubles. Balor blocks the Popup Powerbomb, connects with a forearm, and dropkicks Owens out of the ring to end the show.
Final Thoughts:
The commentary team tried really hard to put over Eva as this polished gem of a wrestler. It was beyond obvious that she was reading from a teleprompter in her promo. She looked like someone in her very first match. There was no intensity with the execution of moves and she has no ring presence whatsoever. She can’t worse, but hopefully she will get better.
The Vaudevillians didn’t seem like worthy contenders for the tag team titles, but I have a feeling they are going to surprise a lot of people.
I know Regal doesn’t wrestle often these days, but I would love to see him tango with Owens just one time. The feud writes itself since Owens is constantly disrespecting him and just laid him out with a punch.
With Charlotte. Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch gaining residency on the main roster, it looks like Bayley is going to be positioned as the top women’s wrestler in NXT.
