In Memoriam

On this day in 2007, the wrestling world lost WWE & WCW Hall of Famer ‘The Big Cat’ Ernie Ladd at the age of 68. Like many wrestlers, Ladd began his sporting career playing football, but unlike most of his peers, Ladd found success in the sport. He never quite made the grade in the NFL, but was a 4-time AFL All-Star, as well as winning that championship once with the San Diego Chargers. He began wrestling in 1961, but didn’t take it up full time until his football career was ended by knee injuries in 1969. He soon became one of the era’s most hated heels, constantly berating his opponents and using his taped thumb (claiming an old football injury) as a weapon. He was arguably the first wrestler to continually use the heel count out finish, walking away from a match when he seemed in trouble. He competed for the WWWF in the late 70′s, often challenging champions Bruno Sammartino and Pedro Morales, but always fell short. In the 1980′s, he competed primarily for Mid-South, where he also had some sway on the booking committee, most notably kick-starting the push of a young Sylvester Ritter, who would go on to fame as The Junkyard Dog. He retired from wrestling in 1986 following further knee injuries, though would stay active in the business through occasional color commentary with the WWF. After leaving the promotion, Ladd largely stayed away from wrestling, operating a restaurant in New Orleans until it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2003, & was given just 3 months to live. Ladd would eventually succumb to the disease around 4 years later
