8/16/13 Friday Night Smackdown Coverage

We see the Smackdown opening video, and then we go into the SAP Center in San Jose, California, where Michael Cole welcomes us to the show. We see that The Shield will take on Mark Henry, Rob Van Dam, and The Big Show in a Six-Man Tag Team Match and that Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett will go one-on-one in a No Disqualification Match later tonight.

The screen cuts to The Wyatt Family, and Bray Wyatt announces that they are here and they begin to walk towards the ring. We see a video recap of the on-going feud between the Wyatt Family and Kane, and are reminded that Kane and Bray Wyatt will go one-on-one inside a ring of fire this Sunday at SummerSlam.

Wyatt takes the mic and tells us the story of a young Kane growing up and how he became Kane. Wyatt says he will show us how one man’s hell is another man’s paradise at SummerSlam. He ends it with “Follow the Buzzards” as Kane’s music hits. The Family is waiting for him in the ring, and he attacks them from behind. He drops Erick Rowan and Luke Harper on the floor and gets into the ring with Wyatt. Kane pummels Wyatt in the corner, but Harper and Rowan get into the ring and beat Kane down as Wyatt hangs upside down and watches from the corner. Wyatt grabs Kane and kisses his head and delivers his finisher. Wyatt kneels over Kane with Rowan and Harper standing behind him as we head to a commercial.

Match #1: Christian vs. Damien Sandow
They tie up and then Christian trips Sandow into the ropes. Christian connects with a missile dropkick from the middle rope and goes for a cover, but Sandow kicks out at two. Christian charges at Sandow again, but Sandow sends him to the outside with a running knee. Sandow goes out after him and tosses him back into the ring. Sandow goes for the cover, but Christian kicks out at two. Sandow knees Christian in the midsection and tosses him to the outside again. Sandow goes out after him and sends him flying over the steel steps as we head to a commercial break.
We’re back and Sandow has Christian in a headlock down on the mat. Christian fights out and delivers a back-drop to Sandow. Sandow goes to the corner, but Christian delivers a series of right hands and then slams him to the mat. Christian goes for the cover, but Sandow kicks out at two. Christian goes for a cross-body from the top, but Sandow moves out of the way. Sandow drops Christian with a neck-breaker and goes for a cover, but Christian kicks out at two. Christian comes back and delivers a back elbow from the middle rope. Christian goes for the Killswitch, but Sandow reverses and sends Christian into the ropes. He drops Christian with a side-Russian leg-sweep and goes for the Cobito Aquiet, but Christian rolls him up and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Christian.
After the match, Christian delivers a Spear to Sandow. Alberto Del Rio rushes the ring and attacks Christian. He beats Christian down and then hits him with the microphone. Del Rio goes for the cross arm-breaker, but Christian gets free and delivers the Killswitch to Del Rio.

We go backstage and Renee Young is with Rob Van Dam. She asks him about his match with Dean Ambrose and asks if he is worried about The Shield. He says he’s not, and The Big Show and Mark Henry walk up. Show says he was sitting on his couch when he remembered he had unfinished business with The Shield. Henry says they have RVD’s back as they walk away.

Match #2: AJ Lee and Layla vs. Kaitlyn and Natalya
Natalya and Layla start the match and Natalya locks in a headlock on the mat. Layla rolls through and gets to her feet. Natalya gets Layla in a roll-up, but Layla kicks out at two. Layla takes Natalya down with an arm-drag, but Natalya gets her in a pinning situation, but only gets a two count. Layla comes back and gets Natalya in a headlock. Layla tags in AJ, who kicks Natalya in the corner as Layla locks Natalya in the ropes. AJ gets on Natalya’s back and then slams her to the mat. AJ delivers a cheap shot to Kaitlyn and then locks in the headlock on Natalya again. Natalya slings AJ to the mat and tags in Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn clotheslines AJ in the corner and delivers a back-breaker. Kaitlyn goes for the cover, but AJ kicks out at two. AJ kicks Kaitlyn in the face and comes off the ropes, but Kaitlyn catches her and delivers a gut-buster. Kaitlyn goes for the cover, but Layla breaks it up at two. Natalya takes Layla down and the referee tries to get Natalya out of the ring as Layla kicks Kaitlyn in the back of her knee. AJ delivers the Shining Wizard and gets the pin fall on Kaitlyn.
Winners: AJ Lee and Layla.

Renee Young is backstage and she asks him why he is not on the SummerSlam. He says it’s because people are scared of him. He looks over at someone and asks him what he is looking at. Ryback walks towards him and it’s one of the backstage guys. Ryback asks him if he is scared and what he is looking at. Ryback punches him in the midsection and then slaps him across the face. Ryback shoves him over a table and then tells Renee that people are scared of him again.

We will take a special look at the feud between CM Punk and Brock Lesnar after the commercial break.

We’re back and we see a video package highlighting the on-going feud between CM Punk and Brock Lesnar.

Match #3: Six-Man Tag Team Match – Mark Henry, Rob Van Dam, and The Big Show vs. The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins)
Henry and Rollins start the match. Henry backs Rollins into the corner and chops him down to the mat. Henry picks Rollins up and slams him to the mat. Henry tags in RVD, who delivers a kick to Rollins’ face. RVD gets Rollins in the corner and delivers the monkey flip. RVD connects with the standing moonsault and goes for the cover, but Rollins kicks out at two. Rollins tags in Ambrose, who takes RVD down with a big clothesline. Ambrose drops RVD with another clothesline and tags in Reigns. Reigns slams RVD down to the mat and then applies a headlock. RVD fights back and drops Reigns down to the mat. RVD tags in Show and Reigns tags in Ambrose. Show takes Ambrose down with a back body drop and knocks Rollins off the apron. Show goes towards the ropes, but Reigns pulls them down and Show falls to the floor. Henry slams Reigns into the barricade and Rollins flies off the top rope and takes Henry down. Ambrose waits for Show to get back into the ring and then goes for a headlock, but Show tosses him away and then hits the KO Punch. Show tags in RVD, who hits the Five-Star Frogsplash and gets the pin fall.
Winners: Rob Van Dam, Mark Henry, and The Big Show.

We are reminded that Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett will go one-on-one in a No Disqualification Match later tonight. We see The Miz walking backstage. He will go one-on-one with Jack Swagger after the commercial break.

Match #4: Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter and Antonio Cesaro) vs. The Miz
They tie up and Swagger backs Miz into the corner. Swagger delivers a few right hands, but Miz reverses and delivers a series of rights. Miz comes back and works over Swagger’s leg. Swagger comes back and slams Miz down to the mat and then drops him with a clothesline. Swagger does push-ups over Miz and then drops him with a shoulder block. Miz comes back and drops Swagger with a neck-breaker. Swagger comes off the ropes, but Miz takes his knee out. Miz goes for the cover, but Swagger kicks out at two. Miz goes for a kick, but Swagger ducks underneath. Miz takes Swagger to the corner and then delivers a clothesline. Miz gets on the apron, but Cesaro gets involved. The referee ejects Colter and Cesaro and Miz rolls Swagger up for the pin fall.
Winner: The Miz.

We are reminded again that Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett will go one-on-one in a No Disqualification Match later tonight.

We see Curtis Axel and Paul Heyman walking backstage. Axel is in action after the commercial, but we will hear from Heyman first as well.

Match #5: Curtis Axel (w/Paul Heyman) vs. Zack Ryder
Ryder goes for a quick roll-up, but Axel kicks out at two. Ryder delivers a few right hands and slams Axel into the corner. Ryder takes Axel down with a flapjack and goes for the cover, but Axel kicks out at two. Axel takes control of the match and stomps Ryder down to the mat. Axel takes Ryder to the corner, but Ryder reverses and drops Axel with a missile dropkick. Ryder splashes Axel in the corner and then goes for the Broski Boot. Axel rolls out of the way, but Ryder kicks him on the outside. Ryder tosses Axel back into the ring and goes for a cross-body, but Axel moves. Axel drops Ryder and pummels him down on the mat. Axel slams Ryder with a back-drop and then delivers the spinning neck-breaker for the pin fall.
Winner: Curtis Axel.
After the match, Heyman grabs a microphone. He will address the WWE Universe after the commercial break.

We’re back and Heyman says he got outsmarted by CM Punk on Raw this past Monday. Heyman says he and Brock Lesnar conspired against Punk, but Punk figured it out. Heyman says SummerSlam is Punk’s thirst for revenge against he and Lesnar, but that has shifted. Heyman says Punk is now the target of revenge, and that will happen at the hands of Brock Lesnar.

We take a look back to this past Monday’s Raw where Brad Maddon quick-counted Daniel Bryan’s shoulders to the mat and offered to be the Special Guest Referee in the Daniel Bryan/John Cena match at SummerSlam, only to be Pedigreed by Triple H before it was announced that Triple H would be the Special Guest Referee.

Match #6: No Disqualification Match – Daniel Bryan vs. Wade Barrett
Bryan takes control of the match early on and goes for the surfboard submission on Barrett, but Barrett fights out and sends Bryan to the outside. Barrett goes on the offensive, but Bryan sends him over the barricade and into the timekeeper’s area. Bryan exposes some of the concrete around ringside, but Barrett comes back and slams him into the announce table. Barrett slams Bryan into the steel steps. Barrett tosses Bryan back into the ring and grabs a kendo stick. Bryan goes to swing it at Barrett, but he rolls out of the ring. Bryan dives onto Barrett on the outside and then tosses him back into the ring. Bryan delivers the diving headbutt and is setting up for the Yes Lock as Vince McMahon’s music hits and he marches down to ringside as we head to a commercial.
We’re back and McMahon is looking on from the bottom of the ramp as Bryan kicks Barrett a few times. Barrett comes back and drops Bryan with a suplex. Barrett slams Bryan into the ring post and then tosses him into the ring. Bryan comes back and hits Barrett with a kendo stick and kicks him simultaneously. Bryan goes for a big kick, but Barrett ducks and rolls Bryan up, but Bryan kicks out at two. Bryan locks in the Yes Lock, but McMahon pulls the referee out of the ring. Barrett hits Bryan with the Bull Hammer Elbow and Brad Maddox rushes the ring and makes a normal count and Bryan kicks out at two. Bryan kicks Barrett in the face and goes for the cover, but McMahon tells him not to count. Barrett accidentally hits Maddox and Bryan splashes Barrett in the corner. Barrett and Bryan slug it out and Barrett goes to slams Bryan through a table, but Bryan sends him through it instead. McMahon grabs the referee shirt and goes to get into the ring. Triple H’s music hits and he makes his way to the ring with a referee shirt on. Bryan goes up top and delivers the diving headbutt. Bryan goes for the pin fall, and Triple H makes the three count.
Winner: Daniel Bryan.
After the match, Triple H and Bryan shake hands and Bryan leads the fans in a “YES!” chant before Randy Orton’s music hits. Orton comes to the stage with the Money in the Bank briefcase. He holds the briefcase high overhead as Bryan shakes his head no as the camera fades to black.
