7/5/13 Smackdown Recap: CM Punk vs. Alberto Del Rio

We see the Smackdown opening video and then go into the arena in Topeka, Kansas where Michael Cole welcomes us to the show. CM Punk’s music hits and he makes his way to the ring. We see what happened between Punk, Curtis Axel, and Paul Heyman this past Monday night on Raw.

Punk says if he was John Cena, he would give a heartfelt speech about how America was founded on hustle, loyalty, and respect, but luckily for the fans he is not John Cena, he is CM Punk. Punk says the Fourth of July means, to him, independence. How a group of guys got together and decided they were going to do their own things and go by their own rules. Punk says that’s a concept that he can get behind because independence is something that is important to him. He says his first instinct is to break everyone else’s rules. He said he walks away after WrestleMania and told Paul Heyman to stay away. Punk says he is going to prove everyone wrong who said that he has no shot at winning the upcoming Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Punk says he has two goals right now: to get his hands on Brock Lesnar, and to win the Money in the Bank All-Star Match and become the WWE Champion again. Alberto Del Rio’s music hits and the World Heavyweight Champion comes to the stage. Del Rio says he was expecting more from Punk. Punk asks Del Rio what he wants. Del Rio says he is the World Heavyweight Champion, and Smackdown is his show. Punk says Smackdown has never been Del Rio’s show and asks him what he wants again. Del Rio says Americans celebrate by stuffing their faces with hot dogs, hamburgers, and French fries, but all they do with their freedom is sit and watch TV all day and get fatter and fatter every day, and then they come to Smackdown and cheer a pig like Dolph Ziggler. Del Rio says they chant ‘USA!’ because they are nothing but a bunch of sheep. Punk says as of two weeks ago, Del Rio would start the ‘USA!’ chants and only changed his opinion because the people saw through him. Del Rio says somebody needs to teach Punk manners. Del Rio says he is the World Heavyweight Champion, and Punk says that means Del Rio is the number one contender to his title of Best in the World. Del Rio says this is his ring, his show, and orders Punk to leave. Punk says he is going to stay in the ring until Del Rio makes his get out of it. Teddy Long’s music hits and he comes to the stage. Teddy makes the main event tonight a one-on-one contest between Del Rio and Punk.

We go to Michael Cole and JBL at ringside, and they hype the main event and then reveal that Christian and Randy Orton will go one-on-one later tonight as we head to commercial.

We see CM Punk backstage when Paul Heyman walks up. Heyman says the match with Del Rio makes no sense to him. Heyman offers to get Punk out of the match. Punk says he is going to fight Del Rio anyway. Heyman says Punk has to have eyes in the back of his head for Money in the Bank and offers to be in Punk’s corner, but Punk tells him to stay out of it.

Match #1: Team Rhodes Scholars vs. The Usos
Rhodes and Jey start the match out. Jey connects with a kick to Rhodes’ face and takes him into the corner. Jey tags in Jimmy and they double-team Rhodes and Jimmy connects with a standing cross-body. Jimmy goes for the cover, but Rhodes kicks out at one. Rhodes comes back with a dropkick and then takes Jimmy to the corner and tags in Sandow. Sandown beats down Jimmy and then delivers the Cobito Acquiet. Sandow goes for the cover, but Jimmy kicks out at two. Sandow tags in Rhodes, but Jimmy sends Rhodes over the top rope and Jey kicks Rhodes down to the floor. Jimmy slams Sandow to the mat and tags in Jey, and The Usos double-splash Sandow from the top, and Jey gets the pin fall.
Winners: The Usos.
After the match, The Shield appears on the TitanTron. Rollins congratulates them on their win, and says they and Christian were able to slip one by on The Shield last week on Smackdown. Rollins says they are more focused than ever before. Reigns says they better bring a whole lot more than luck to Money in the Bank, or they will be put back in their place. Ambrose says his win over Christian this past Monday was the first of 99 in a row. Ambrose says he will become Mr. Money in the Bank, while still being the United States Champion, and will rule the world. He says the WWE Universe can believe that and can believe in The Shield.

We are reminded of tonight’s main event: Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk as we head to a commercial.

We are reminded of Vickie Guerrer’s Job Evaluation with Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Vince McMahon on this upcoming Monday’s Raw.

Match #2: Alicia Fox vs. Kaitlyn (w/Layla)
Alicia delivers a few knees to Kaitlyn’s midsection and then takes her to the corner and delivers a few elbow shots. Alicia gets Kaitlyn out of the corner and bridges into a cover, but Kaitlyn kicks out at two. Alicia slams Kaitlyn’s head into the mat and goes for another cover, but Kaitlyn kicks out at two again. Alicia applies a submission down on the mat, and then slams her head into the mat. Alicia picks Kaitlyn up and slams her head into the turnbuckle and tosses her down to the mat. Alicia applies a headlock, but Kaitlyn fights out. Kaitlyn takes Alicia down with a clothesline, but AJ Lee’s music hits and the Divas Champion skips around ringside. Kaitlyn tries to ignore AJ and takes Alicia down with a shoulder block. AJ gets on the apron, but Kaitlyn delivers a dropkick to her. Alicia grabs Kaitlyn and rolls her up for the pin fall.
Winner: Alicia Fox.
After the match, Kaitlyn chases AJ Lee up and ramp and into the backstage area.

We are reminded of the main event once more: Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk, as we head to a commercial.

We see AJ Lee sprinting backstage when The Bella Twins stop her. They says AJ needs to watch her back because the Divas Championship will soon be there’s. AJ runs into Big E. Langston and says they need to get out of here, but he asks about Dolph Ziggler. AJ says he has a match, but they don’t have time to wait, and she will text him from the car. She yells at Langston to get the car and he laughs and walks away.

We take a look back at Monday’s Raw, where Daniel Bryan quick-counted Randy Orton, allowing Kane to get the win, and then Orton RKO’ing Bryan.
Renee Young is backstage interviewing Christian and Randy Orton. Christian says he has beaten Orton in the past, and will do it again tonight before going on to win the Money in the Bank All-Stars Match. Orton says Christian will find out first hand why Orton is the favorite going into the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, and will beat Christian in ‘one more match’ later on before walking away.

We see a vignette for The Wyatt Family, who will debut on this coming Monday Night Raw.

Match #3: Christian vs. Randy Orton
Christian takes Orton down and applies a front-face lock, but Orton fights out and drops Christian with a shoulder block. Orton gets Christian in a headlock, but Christian sends him off the ropes and drops him with a clothesline. Christian sends Orton to the corner and slaps him across the face. Christian tosses Orton into the opposite corner, but Orton comes right back with a big clothesline. Orton goes for the cover, but Christian kicks out at two. Christian puts Orton on the middle rope and stands on his back. Orton comes back and reverses into the middle-rope DDT position, but Christian fights out and dumps Orton over the top rope to the floor as we head to a commercial.
We’re back and Orton goes for a knee drop on Christian, but Christian rolls out of the way. The two men exchange right hands before Christian backs away and comes off the ropes. Orton counters with a Thesz Press, but Christian gets away and rolls onto the ring apron. Orton goes after him, but Christian drapes him over the top rope. Christian goes up top and connects with a cross-body and goes for the cover, but Orton kicks out at two. Christian gets Orton in a headlock, but Orton fights out and sends Christian chest-first into the turnbuckle. The two men exchange punches and kicks before Christian comes off the ropes. Orton counters with a dropkick. Orton drops Christian with a couple clotheslines and goes for the power slam, but Christian counters and kicks Orton in the midsection. Christian takes Orton to the corner, but Orton reverses and delivers ten right hands to Christian’s face. Orton sends Christian to the opposite corner and charges, but Christian counters with two boots to Orton’s head. Orton comes back and slams Christian to the mat and goes for the cover, but Christian kicks out at two. Christian charges at Orton in the corner, but Orton counters and rolls Christian up for a two count. Christian charges at Orton again, but Orton counters with a power slam. Orton goes for a cover, but Christian kicks out at two. Christian goes for the Killswitch, but Orton counters and goes for the RKO, but Christian counters right back and delivers a back-drop to Orton. Christian connects with the Spear and goes for the cover, but Orton kicks out at two. Christian goes for the Killswitch, but Orton counters and takes Christian to the ropes. Orton delivers the middle-rope DDT and sets up for the RKO. Orton goes for the RKO, but Christian counters and slams Orton to the mat. Christian goes up top and dives off, but Orton moves. Christian charges, but Orton catches him with an RKO and gets in the pin fall.
Winner: Randy Orton.

We see Teddy Long in his office talking on his cellphone when someone knocks on the door. Paul Heyman walks in and Teddy says he was looking for him. Teddy says he wants Heyman on commentary for the main event, and Heyman says no. Teddy says Heyman can provide some insight for the main event. Teddy says Punk said Heyman doesn’t go out there, but he says he does. Heyman pats Teddy on the back, smirks, and walks away.

We see the graphic for the Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk match one more time as we head to a commercial.

We see the return vignette for Rob Van Dam.

Before the match, Ziggler cuts a promo. He says the biggest night of his career was when he beat Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship, but then after that it is nothing but a blur. He says he does remember Del Rio saying that he loved America and loved the WWE Universe, but he couldn’t convince the fans that he was likable. Ziggler says Del Rio is full of crap. Ziggler says he may be a lot of things, but he has never claimed to be something he’s not. He’s cocky and arrogant, but he comes out every single night and delivers. Ziggler says at Money in the bank, he is taking back the World Heavyweight Championship.

Match #4: Dolph Ziggler vs. Drew McIntyre (w/Heath Slater and Jinder Mahal)
Ziggler and McIntyre go back and forth before Ziggler goes for a quick roll up, but McIntyre kicks out at one. McIntyre comes back and kicks Ziggler in the midsection and clubs him on the back. Ziggler tries to fight back, but McIntyre tosses Ziggler head-first into the top turnbuckle. McIntyre drags Ziggler to the middle of the ring and goes for the cover, but Ziggler kicks out at two. McIntyre tosses Ziggler into the corner again and beats him down. McIntyre connects with a suplex and goes for the cover, but Ziggler kicks out at one. McIntyre applies a submission down on the mat, but Ziggler fights out. McIntyre keeps control and delivers two back-breakers to Ziggler and goes for the cover, but Ziggler kicks out at two. McIntyre goes to kick Ziggler in the corner, but Ziggler moves and drops McIntyre with a dropkick of his own. Ziggler goes for the cover, but McIntyre kicks out at two. Ziggler hits the Zigzag out of nowhere to get the pin fall.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler.
After the match, Slater and Mahal try to attack Ziggler, but Ziggler escapes. Slater tells him to get back into the ring. Ziggler does, and this time escapes all three 3MB members.

We see a video hype package for the number one contender to the WWE Championship, Mark Henry.

We see Fandango and Summer Rae walking backstage. Fandango is in action after the commercial break.

Match #5: Fandango (w/Summer Rae) vs. Justin Gabriel
Fandango and Gabriel go back-and-forth for a bit before Fandango drops him with a shoulder block. Gabriel comes back and sends Fandango onto the ring apron, and then pulls his legs out from under him and causes Fandango to go face-first into the apron. Gabriel goes to launch himself over the top rope, but Fandango kicks him in the head. Fandango goes to the top rope and delivers the leg drop and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Fandango.
After the match, Fandango pronounces his name and dances with Summer Rae.

We are reminded one last time of the main event tonight: Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk, with Paul Heyman on commentary. It will happen after the commercial break.

Match #6: Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk
The two men tie up and Punk backs Del Rio into the corner before the referee separates them. Del Rio takes Punk into the corner, but Punk fights out and sends Del Rio down to the mat. Punk delivers a dropkick and then sends Del Rio to the corner. Del Rio reverses and beats Punk down in the corner. Punk comes back and clotheslines Del Rio in the corner and takes him down with the running bulldog. Punk goes to the top and sets up for the Macho Man Elbow Drop, but Del Rio rolls to the outside as we head to a commercial.
We’re back and Del Rio kicks Punk in the chest. Del Rio tries to lock in the arm-bar submission, but Punk counters with a few kicks. Del Rio slams Punk down to the mat and goes for the cover, but Punk kicks out at two. Del Rio works over Punk’s arm, but Punk reverses and goes for the GTS. Del Rio gets free and delivers an arm-breaker to Punk. Del Rio goes for the cover, but Punk kicks out at one. Del Rio delivers a series of headbutts and then a stiff kick to Punk head and goes for the cover, but Punk kicks out at two. Punk comes back and drops Del Rio to the mat and slowly climbs to the top rope. Del Rio recovers and delivers a kick to Punk’s head and Punk falls to the mat. Del Rio goes for the cover, but Punk kicks out at two. Del Rio goes for the cross arm-breaker, but Punk rolls through. Del Rio sends Punk to the ring apron and dropkicks him down to the floor. Del Rio goes out after Punk and sends him into the barricade and kicks him in the head. Del Rio tosses Punk onto the announce table. Del Rio decks Heyman and Punk clotheslines Del Rio from the announce table. Punk beats down Del Rio on the floor as the referee calls for the bell, as both men have been counted out.
Match Result: Double Countout.
After the match, Punk throws Del Rio into the barricade and then back into the ring. Punk drops Del Rio with a GTS. Punk goes to the outside and checks on Heyman and helps him to his feet. Heyman apologizes to Punk as Smackdown comes to a close.
