10/14/11 WWE Smackdown Recap
by Brady Hoy
WWE taped this week’s Smackdown tonight from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long come out to open the show. To celebrate Smackdown being the second longest running episodic TV show ever, they’re doing a 41-man battle royal (biggest ever) with the winner getting a title shot of their choice.
41-man Battle Royal. Eliminations: Cody Rhodes, Derrick Bateman, Michael McGillicutty, William Regal, Percy Watson, Dolph Ziggler, John Morrison, Trent Baretta, Ted DiBiase, Curt Hawkins, Tyler Reks, Drew McIntyre, Justin Gabriel, Mason Ryan, Primo, Santino Marella, Alex Riley, Kofi Kingston, Zack Ryder, David Otunga, Ezekiel Jackson, Heath Slater, Sin Cara (black), The Uso’s, Christin, R-Truth, CM Punk, Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Jack Swagger, Jinder Mahal and even Matt Striker.
The final two came down to The Miz and Randy Orton. Orton hit an RKO on The Miz outside the ropes and both fell out. Miz hit the ground first so Orton won the match. There were a few superstars missing from the match e.g. John Cena and Sin Cara (blue). Daniel Bryan was in the match but for some strange reason we missed his elimination, which seems like just another way the WWE are burying one of their most talented wrestlers.
Orton surprisingly chose to face Mark Henry that night for the World Heavyweight Championship. This was a chance for the WWE to do something refreshing and give a different superstar a chance to prove themselves; instead they gave Orton another title shot.
Then a video aired, which was promoting John Cena vs. The Rock at Wrestlemania XXVIII.
Backstage, Teddy Long tells Alberto Del Rio will face Sheamus tonight.
WWE Divas Champion Beth Phoenix defeated Kelly Kelly in a usual very short match.
Sin Cara (black) attacked Sin Cara (blue) in a good little backstage brawl/segment when he was on his way to the ring to face Justin Gabriel. Sin Cara (black) took Sin Cara’s (blue) mask and put it on over his own. He then entered the ring to defeat Justin Gabriel.
Next there was a backstage segment where Teddy Long said to Airboom that he didn’t want Evan Bourne competing tonight because he saw what happened on Raw, therefore Zack Ryder volunteered to take his place when they face Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger later in the night.
The WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio beat Sheamus after Christian interfered in the match, Christians also speared Sheamus twice after the match was over.
Kofi Kingston & Zack Ryder defeated the team of WWE United States Champion Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger w/Vickie Guerrero
World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry vs. Randy Orton disappointingly ended in a disqualification when the WWE Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes hit the ring to attack Orton. Big Show comes out to make the save, Show then chokeslams Henry (If you can call what he did a chokeslam) and Orton gave Rhodes the RKO..
