David McLane Hopes Third Time is the Charm with 'Women of Wrestling'

David McLane, promoter of the Women of Wrestling, is at it again. You might remember the graduate of Indiana University in the-mid 80's with GLOW, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. After leaving GLOW, McLane formed the short-lived POWW, Powerful Women of Wrestling.

Earlier this fall, McLane started syndicating his newest venture, Women of Wrestling. “Up until now, women's wrestling has been treated as a side show. WOW presents positive female role models in classic good versus evil scenarios. WOW power is about athletic, attractive and talented females,” states McLane.

McLane is not only the creator and producer of the weekly WOW show, but also provides color analysis along with former WCW announcer Lee Marshall, who does the play by play. The show is currently taped at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles. The Forum serves as the official training facility for the promotion, and home of the WOW production offices.

The WOW program has strong syndication, running in the Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Detroit, Atlanta, and Seattle markets among others. WOW is seen in nearly 75 percent of the country on 98 television stations. McLane has also penetrated Canada with his latest attempt at promoting women’s wrestling.

“Station response has been overwhelming for WOW,” said Richard Perin, President of MG/Perin, Inc. (distributor of WOW), “and more than 35 percent of the stations are adding a second run in important time periods.”

Despite the lack of a national television contract, McLane is promoting his company’s first live pay-per-view on February 4th. The promotion’s first ever tag team champions will be crowded at the event. The tag team tournament has started on WOW television.

“This is the tag team tournament the fans have been demanding!” exclaims announcer Lee Marshall, who doubles as a radio personality in Los Angeles. The odds on favorites to capture the tag team title is Caged Heat, two young African-Americans that must return to prison upon competing in the ring. The Beach Patrol have an outside chance at claiming the tag straps; a blonde duo that belongs on “Baywatch.”

You won’t find any former WWF or WCW stars on the WOW roster. According to McLane, “WOW is history in the making. The characters range from the beautiful Beach Patrol to the Harley’s Angles motorcycle gang and from World Class Gymnast Terri Gold to martial arts experts. Everyone can find a character they relate to in this ring. WOW performers are the women we are, the women we dream of and the women we wish we could be.”

Terri Gold is the current WOW champion, winning the title by eliminating nineteen other women in an over the top rope battle royal. “Since then I have defended The WOW Championship Title against Jungle Grrrl, The Disciplinarian, Mystery and I think Ice Cold is next, no problem of course, I will melt her in the ring,” States Gold. She describes her wrestling styles as “Quick, high-flying, action packed and intense!”

McLane has assembled an interesting roster of young women grapplers. Hammerin' Heather Steele is the female version of Tim “The Toolman” Taylor. Steele is never seen without her tool belt firmly around her waist. Slam Dunk, on the other hand, is a basketball player as the name suggests. The 6’3” star tried out for the WNBA, but now concentrates on a career in the squared circle.
