"Cyber Sunday comes and goes…"

Cyber Sunday had its moments. Cyber Sunday also had moments I don’t want to relive. The first half of the show was largely forgettable. The second half of the show felt like a PPV. Over all, I don’t like the format of Cyber Sunday because it seems to tie the booking team up in knots. They knew fans would vote for Shawn Michaels in the WWE title match, but apparently couldn’t come up with an acceptable finish for the match. We see low blows all the time, and in a lot of cases, and are not a cause for a disqualification.

Fans voted for a stretcher match for Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay. The voters could have voted for the opening match to be no-DQ or a Shillelagh on a Pole. Even though the fans voted, we got all three. The stretcher match turned out to be no disqualification, and featured both wrestlers aiming to use the shillelagh that was hanging from a pole. Mysterio did a good job improvising when a cable prevented him from pulling the stretcher to the finish line.

Matt Hardy either couldn’t wrestle, or they wouldn’t allow him to wrestle. No problem, these things happen. With Hardy off the PPV, the powers that be changed the match to MVP vs. Mark Henry, the Great Khali, or Kane. Obviously fans were going to vote for Kane. After all, who wants to see Henry or Khali in the ring, period? Once again, WWE couldn’t come up with a finish, and we were subjected to a lame count out finish on PPV.

The fans choosing The Miz over Big Daddy V in the ECW title match was a slap in the face to WWE’s creative team. They have been grooming Big Daddy V for the spot, yet fans picked the dorky Miz. WWE has the knack of bringing in Tazz and Joey Styles for one match on a PPV, and usually early in the evening. ECW (and the ECW title) comes off as meaning almost nothing, especially when the ECW title matches aren’t given enough time to tell a compelling story in the ring.

All night, we were subjected to seeing the divas in various Halloween costumes. Jim Ross was comical in downplaying the entire contest. His comments came off a shoot, as it appeared he knew how pointless this contest really was. What did the winner get? Some of the costumes were simply ridiculous. What was Kelly Kelly wearing? Jillian Hall was Brittany Spears? I thought she was Brooke Hogan? Michelle McCool as Eve from the Garden of Eve? Please.

I always get a kick out of a pay-per-view bonus matches I don’t want to see? Did anyone catch how awful Mr. Kennedy looked in last week’s main event working with Jeff Hardy and Shawn Michaels? I am not a HBK fan, but how can anyone look bad in the ring with Michaels? What was the point of Mr. Kennedy beating Jeff Hardy anyway?

I don’t know about you, but this save us 222 stuff has gotten old fast. It’s like put Chris Jericho out there already, before we don’t give a darn.

Putting the WWE title match on in the middle of the card almost always guarantees a screwball finish. This was a good match, until the ending. HBK got a decent match out of Orton, but typically Mr. Orton has rather bland generic matches with loads of chin and headlocks. In my humble opinion, Orton should have beaten HBK with a heel type finish to set up a rematch. I know HBK just returned, but beating Michaels doesn’t hurt him at all.

I was bit surprised the fans didn’t vote for the steel cage match for Triple H vs. Umaga. It appeared the fans in the arena weren’t all that excited about the winning stipulation, a street fight, but I think it was the best match they could have put on of the three choices. This was a solid match, and at this point, the PPV started to get interesting. I just don’t like the sledgehammer, after all, what would happen if he really hit someone with it?

I believe Michael Cole said that Undertaker had faced Batista four times for the World Heavyweight title. Most people know I don’t like Batistaberg, but he and The Undertaker work well together, and Cyber Sunday ended on a good note with a top notch main event. I’m glad Steve Austin didn’t play in a role in the match, getting his stunners out of the way before the main event started.

Cyber Sunday featured a rather blah undercard, but delivered two good matches. Two good matches, but nothing off the charts. Basically, nothing if you didn’t see it, it’s nothing I would go out of my way to catch. I’m going to give Cyber Sunday a thumbs in the middle. The best match? I’m going with the Umaga-Trips street fight.
