Randy Savage turns on Flair; DDP wins the WCW Title
In the main event at “Spring Stampede,” fourteen-world champion Ric Flair defended the WCW title in a Four Corners, Texas Tornado match against “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan, Diamond Dallas Page, and Sting. The match, which allowed all four wrestlers to be in the ring at the same time, marked the return of the “Macho Man” Randy Savage, who was escorted to the ring by his new valet “Gorgeous” George, to referee the WCW title match.
At one point in the match, Flair, Page, and Sting collaborated in working on Hogan’s knee. The result was an injury for Hogan, who was escorted to the back by WCW trainer Danny Young, and head of security Doug Dillenger. WCW boss Eric Bischoff made a rare appearance to see Hogan to the back.
Flair had Sting in the figure four-leg lock, when Savage pulled Flair towards the center of the ring. Savage, who appeared to be in great shape, climbed to the top rope, and delivered an elbow drop on the WCW “president.”
In the end, Diamond Dallas Page used his patented Diamond Cutter on Flair, to gain the fall, and win his first ever WCW title.
In the finals of the United States Heavyweight title tournament, “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner defeated Booker T. to be declared the new champion. Two times referee Johnny Moon was knocked out, preventing the World Television champion Booker T. from gaining a clean win. As Booker T. applied a suplex, Steiner used a foreign object to the head to win the U.S. title.
Steiner, who be-raided the crowd prior to the match, heard chants of “steroids” from the Tacoma Dome crowd.
Kevin Nash, the man responsible for ending Goldberg’s winning streak at 173, gained revenge in the semi main event. Despite outside interference from Lex Luger, Goldberg blocked Nash’s attempt at a jack knife powerbomb, and clobbered Nash with a spear and jackhammer to gain the fall.
In an awesome tag team match, Chris Beniot and Dean Malenko defeated Raven and Perry Saturn. Heel referee Charles Robinson was assigned to the match, and was partial towards the Horsemen. After an Even Flow DDT applied by Raven on Beniot, Arn Anderson entered the ring to place a chair on top of Raven. Beniot dropped a head butt from the top rope on the chair, allowing Malenko to cover Raven for the victory.
WCW tag team champions Rey Mysterio, Jr. and Kidman battled it out for the Cruiserweight title, a title also owned by Mysterio. The match fell short of their earlier encounters. Mysterio was able to use a Frankensteiner from the top rope to retain the Cruiserweight championship.
Konnan used the Disco Inferno’s own finishing maneuver, a craddle DDT called the last dance (the Stone Cold stunner), to defeat the former television champ.
Mikey Whipwreck, in only his third WCW match, faced Scotty Riggs in an unhyped match. Riggs, who played total heel, connected with a flying forearm off the ropes for the victory. The Tacoma, Washington crowded loudly chanted “boring” during the Riggs-Whipwreck encounter.
“The Beast from the East” Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Hardcore Hak (The Sandman) in an entertaining “King of Hardcore” match. Objects such as tables, chairs, a crutch, trash cans, a broom, a salad bowl, a baking pan, and of course, a ladder was used in the bout. In the end, Chasity attempted to use a fire extinguisher on Bigelow, but was unable to get it to work.
Bigelow used his greetings from Asbury Park from the top rope to gain the fall.
Blitzkreig met Juventud Guerrera in the opening bout. It was announced that the winner would receive a title shot at the Cruiserweight champion on Monday’s “Nitro” show. Guerrera used a super Juvi Driver from the top rope to defeat Blitzkreig.
WCW returns to pay-per-view on Sunday, May 9th, for “Slamboree.”
