Ten Things Right with Professional Wrestling
This week, I want to focus on what the wrestling companies are doing right:
1. Kurt Angle. He is cocky, arrogant, and self centered - ingredients that have propelled Angle into one of the best heels in the business.
2. Mark Madden on Nitro. Ok, he is not Jerry "The King" Lawler, but only one man is. It was refreshing to see WCW break up their rather ho-hum announcing teams. Give him time, I think Madden could develop into a great color analysis.
3. ECW vs. TNN on “ECW on TNN.” Cyrus is an effective heel, which has created interest in the battle between Paul Heyman (ECW) and "the network."
4. WWF’s Tag Team division. This division has been depleted over the years, but McMahon has built a great stable of tag teams - The Dudley’s, The Hardy’s, Edge and Christian, the Acolytes, the New Age Outlaws, Too Cool, and even Head Cheese.
5. Miss Hancock. I am searching hard to find anything to praise in WCW, and believe me, it is difficult. Miss Hancock (Skye of the Nitro Girls) is remarkably over right now, in fact, more over than most of their talent roster.
6. Super Crazy as Television champion. Heyman defies the theory that you must be a great mic worker to get over in this business.
7. The Radicals. The WWF has proven that Chris Beniot, Dean Malenko, Eddy Guerrero, and Perry Saturn are superior talent than their mid card status in WCW. Look for Beniot to break out of this group and head to the top of the Federation.
8. Norman Smiley. WCW’s comedy relief. Keep doing the big wiggle Norman! (Told you, I was searching hard).
9. Rhino. Paul Heyman has done a great job of bringing along this future star.
And last but not least:
10. Mick Foley. A man that has truly given every ounce of energy he ever had to the business he has always loved. I have been bombarded with questions regarding his retirement. At this point, the plan is for Foley to walk away from the ring as a wrestler. Only time will tell if his competitive spirit will allow him to be stay away the squared circle.
