Interview with Simon Diamond

Interview conducted: January 25, 2006

Key:
SG> Steve Gerweck
SD> Simon Diamond

SG> How did you get started with TNA?
SD> Scott D'Amore brought Swinger and I in to feud with AMW in 2003 and we both got jobs based off of our match that night on the ppv. This was our third match after two very unsuccessful matches prior to the AMW match.

SG> Some have compared TNA to ECW. Do you see any similarities between the promotions?
SD> Yes, the same hunger in the wrestlers and that us against the world mentality.

SG> Do you believe Paul Heyman could make TNA more competitive?
SD> Yes and no. Paul brings his creative side to the table but he also brings the renegade attitude which usually hurts those he works with/against.

SG> Ultimately, what does TNA have to do to compete with Vince McMahon?
SD> Obtain a prime time slot on Spike during the week.

SG> Why have you never worked for WWE?
SD> Good question...ask Vince that one.

SG> What is your opinion of the current WWE product?
SD> Very uncreative and lacking direction, or more importantly, a vision.

SG> Thoughts on Dawn Marie having a child?
SD> I am very happy for her, she and her husband Matt will make great parents.

SG> You left TNA for a time while Dusty Rhodes was booking, why was that?
SD> Dusty had his own agenda and that did not include me for some reason or the other.

SG> Your over all opinion of Rhodes as a booker?
SD> He was very good back in the day but his last stint in TNA was very lackluster..his vision and the fans expectations were worlds apart.

SG> You are in a group with two of the most under rated wrestlers - David Young and Elix Skipper. Do you feel your group is being held back?
SD> EVERY wrestler always feels they are being held back...the trick is once they are not pushing you to become entertaining outside of being a wrestler, you know, become entertaining in a way that does not matter whether you win or lose. Once we can become that, we will not be held back.

SG> If you were booking yourself, what sort of direction would you either take yourself and/or your group?
SD> I would take myself off television because I would not be be able to do both...plus I am winding down in the ring.

SG> Would you like to be involved in the creative process in TNA?
SD> Would love to.

SG> Your opinion of TNA bringing back Sting after his first run wasn't all that successful?
SD> Great move, because he's still the one guy who never got blemished by going to the WWE so he has still that icon aura around him.

SG> Your opinion of the six sided ring?
SD> It's different..thus I like it.

SG> Do you still keep in contact with Swinger?
SD> I still talk to him every week.

SG> Why did TNA split your team?
SD> They thought our feud could make both of us into singles stars..which we needed at the time. I guess hindsight is 20/20.

SG> On the subject, your best tag team partner?
SD> Swinger.

SG> Should TNA create a secondary heavyweight title?
SD> I think so..maybe a tv title because WWE doesn't have that.

SG> Do you feel Jeff Jarrett is a creditable world champion?
SD> Yes, very much so. Sure, there are other choices to be champion but Jeff can work different styles and that is a hidden value in wrestling.

SG> What is your opinion of the Carter family?
SD> Great hearts, smart business people and are passionate about TNA.

SG> Talk about your baseball background.
SD> I was a 34th round pick of the San Diego Padres as a catcher out of Salesianum High but choose to go play Div 1 baseball at Virgina Commonweatlth Univ. instead because I thought I could improve my position in the draft after 3 years. That didn't happen..I hurt my throwing arm. I just started playing again in a semi pro league in New Jersey and am having a great time.

SG> What has been your best match in your career?
SD> Probably the night Swinger and I won the TNA tag titles from AMW or the finals of the ECW tag tournament at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

SG> What is the biggest rib that has been played on you?
SD> Big Sal and Jeff Jones tried to get me heat with TAZ my 2nd week in TNA. Luckily, Taz didn't believe them!!!!

SG> What is one thing that would surprise to learn about you?
SD> I am a great cook.

SG> Where do you see yourself in five years?
SD> Hopefully moving up in the office at TNA.

SG> Career highlight?
SD> Appearing on my first ppv in ECW, winning the TNA tag titles with Swinger and appearing on Sportscenter and in Sports Illustrated with the White Sox angle. Thank you Dale and AJ!
