Interview with Petey Williams

Interview conducted: January 19, 2006

Key:
SG> Steve Gerweck
PW> Petey Williams

SG> How did you break into the wrestling business?
PW> I've been a wrestling fan my entire life. I met a fan much like myself at the time, he worked at the gym I worked out at. We both thought it would be cool to become wrestlers but neither of us knew how to go about it. He ended up meeting a local indy worker who had mentioned the Can-am wrestling school. My buddy told me about it and we both started training shortly after.

SG> Who do you consider your biggest influences on your in ring style?
PW> Well I don't try to mimic any one wrestler. But a lot of people said that my in-ring style reminds them of Bret Hart or Owen Hart. I take it as a compliment.

SG> What are the origins of the Canadian Destroyer?
PW> Well I get sick of telling the same story so I have a new one every two months or so. This month is as follows... Scott D'Amore showed me the Canadian Destroyer. It is named after Scott's trainer, "the Canadian Destroyer" Doug Chevalier. Doug use to use the move back in the 70's.... but nobody has ever seen the move until I started using it because I brought it to TV. And if you don't like that story I have a shorter one...... I sold my soul to the devil in return for a cool finishing move.

SG> You have had many great matches. Do you have one that is most memorable or one you consider your best?
PW> My most memorable match was with AJ Styles at the first TNA monthly PPV Victory Road. I don't feel that is one of my best though. I enjoyed my match with Alex Shelley at the Super 8 last year. I also have a few favorites with Chris Sabin. Also, a four way match with AJ, Sabin, and Alex last July at Border City Wrestling. The match was 45 mins long and it was an elimination match.

SG> What is the biggest rib that has been played on you?
PW> I had one played on myself and Sabin last weekend at TNA. Sonjay, Shelley and A1 broke into our hotel room, stole our toilet paper, towels and inverted our box spring and bed mattress and re-made our beds..... and they also put on the heat full blast. The heat felt like a slap in the face as soon as we walked in the door. But the prank was just a pay-back from a previous one we played on A1.

SG> You have wrestled from time to time in Japan. Would you like to work more matches in Japan in the future?
PW> I wouldn't mind it. I'm more comfortable with the North American style of wrestling. Japan is a great learning experience and the fans are a lot more respectful towards the wrestlers.

SG> Whats your feeling on TNA running house shows?
PW> We are in the same location week after week. I feel that TNA needs to start doing shows outside of Orlando. March 17th is the first TNA house show in Plymouth, MI outside of Detroit. I think its a big step in the right direction for TNA. It will help build our company and further our fan base.

SG> Team Canada has been together for awhile now. Do you think its time to split up the group?
PW> Never. I like doing the Team Canada thing. It gives me direction for my character and its great wrestling side by side with the rest of the team. I'm the only original member of Team Canada and I've been doing it since the first day I was with TNA. I'm sure it will run its course in the future, and when that time comes I'll be ready. As for right now, I'm enjoying it because I know its not going to last forever.

SG> What happened during the Ultimate X match at Bound for Glory?
PW> Well, I saw the X dangling over the ring and I got on my knees as any heel would do, and prayed for it to fall into my hands. Little did I know that my prayers would be answered. Actually, I was looking up at the X saying, "please don't fall, please don't fall"...... and it fell. I guess it just wasn't secured as well as it should have been.

SG> Do you think TNA should add another singles title as a secondary heavyweight title to the NWA title?
PW> That wouldn't be a bad idea. The only down side is that we only have a 1 hour tv show. It doesn't leave much time to build the title properly. However, it would give mid-card guys a goal to shoot for.

SG> Tell me one thing that would surprise people to learn about you?
PW> I like playing guitar in my spare time. I used to be in a band before I had to quit to pursue my wrestling career full time. I also don't like roller coasters.

SG> In a way with TNA only running shows in Orlando, do you believe the company has turned its back on the Nashville fans?
PW> Hell no. I think the Nashville fans were spoiled and they always sat on their hands during the entire match. Wrestlers feed off of the crowd and the Orlando crowd is very responsive.

SG> Who would be your dream opponent?
PW> Probably Bret Hart, but that will never happen. A more likely one would be Scott D'Amore. I think its any wrestlers dream to step into the ring with your teacher.

SG> At this point, what do you consider your biggest strength? What do you consider your biggest weakness?
PW> I think that I don't do enough high flying moves. I look at it as a weakness but others look at it as smart.

SG> Do you have any interest in working for WWE in the future?
PW> No. I just don't think that the X division style fits in the WWE program.

SG> Where do you see yourself in five years?
PW> TNA hopefully. If I'm doing the same thing I'm doing right now in five years I would be completely satisfied.

SG> Do you like the six sided ring?
PW> The six sided ring is all an illusion. It only takes a minute to get use to. It's really not as complex as everyone thinks it is. It also seems like there is more mat space in it too.

SG> What is Scott D’Amore like out of the ring?
PW> Outside of TNA Scott is one of my best friends. He is really a kind hearted nice guy (to me anyways). I look up to him as a father figure, kind of like the dad I always wanted. I even call him Dad every now and then.

SG> Your goals in the future?
PW> X title I guess. I'm happy right where I am now. Maybe taking a walk on the babyface side would be something I would like to experience.
