MMA News and Notes
Alex Peredo - Friday, July 3 2009 - 12:11 PM

~ Following a 2-1 record in the world's premier MMA organization, middleweight Rob Kimmons has signed a new four-fight contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

~ Antoni Hardonk, a UFC Heavyweight who was training in Los Angeles recently thwarted an armed robbery. Three men attempted to steal his wallet but backed down when he refused to give it to them. He later saw the same three men assaulting a man to steal his wallet when Hardonk ran towards and prevented the men from taking the wallet. The three men escaped and there were no injuries.

~ The latest installment of the M-1 Challenge Series will take place Saturday at the Seoul Arena in South Korea. The series pits five-man teams against each other in a format similar to the now-defunct International Fight League with fights coming at 155 pounds, 170, 185, 205 and heavyweight. The team matchups set for this weekend are Team U.S. West against Russia Imperial, South Korea versus Brazil and Finland takes on Bulgaria. Team Brazil contains Affliction Fabio Nascimiento, PRIDE and Pancrase veteran Daniel Acacio, and Givanildo Santana who is known as 'The Arm Collector' for winning 11 of his 12 fights by armbar.

~ A bill that calls for the Indiana Athletic Commission (formerly the Indiana State Boxing Commission) to regulate mixed martial arts went into effect Wednesday. The state is one of 39 in the U.S. that either regulates MMA or has passed legislation that will require regulation in the coming months. Although Indiana has hosted numerous un-sanctioned MMA shows in recent years, official regulation opens the doors for organizations such as the UFC, WEC to hit the potentially lucrative market of Indianapolis.

~ A featherweight bout between former UFC and WEC fighter Mark Hominick (16-8) and IFL veteran Deividas Taurosevicius (10-3) is slated for the "Affliction: Trilogy" fight card. Hominick hasn't fought since the organization's first show, "Banned," when he defeated Savant Young with a second-round submission in July 2008. Taurosevicius makes his Affliction debut after also taking more than a year off from competition. The Lithuanian hasn't fought since a May 2008 decision loss to Ryan Schultz in the IFL where he broke his foot.
