This Day In Wrestling History – February 27th

1973 – After winning a series of ten matches, AJPW founder Giant Baba names himself the inaugural PWF World Heavyweight Champion.

1976Chavo & Gory Guerrero defeat Senor X & Karl Von Brauner, to win the NWA Americas Tag Team Championship.

1981 – Gino Hernandez defeats Chavo Guerrero, to win the NWA International Junior Heavyweight Championship.

1984 – In Stampede Wrestling, Danny Davis & Hubert Gallant defeat Davey Boy Smith & Bruce Hart, to win the Stampede Wrestling International Tag Team Championship.

1985 – In International World Class Championship Wrestling, Dory Funk, Jr. defeats World Wrestling Council Universal Heavyweight Champion Carlos Colon, to win both the IWCCW Heavyweight Championship AND Colon’s WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship.  To date this is the only time the WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship has legitimately changed hands outside of Puerto Rico.

1999 – In the East Coast Wrestling Association, Steve Bradley defeats Christopher Daniels, to win the 1999 ECWA Super 8 Tournament.

1999 – Super Delfin defeats Olimpico, to win the CMLL World Welterweight Championship.

2000 – WWF No Way Out is held in Hartford, CT in front of 12,551 fans.  In an Intercontinental Championship Match, European Champion Kurt Angle defeats Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho, to become “Euro-continental Champion.”  The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & Devon) become new Tag Team Champions after defeating The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn)Big Show defeats The Rock, to become #1 contender to the WWF Championship at WrestleMania 2000.  In the main event, Triple H wins a Hell in a Cell Match against Cactus Jack, to retain the WWF Championship.  Since Cactus Jack lost, he was forced to retire.

2000 – Kenta Kobashi defeats Vader, to win the AJPW Triple Crown Championship.

2001Stacy “The Kat” Carter is released by the WWF, allegedly due to “attitude problems.”  The Kat was part of an in-progress storyline with the Right to Censor stable at the time of her release.  Her husband, RAW commentator, Jerry Lawler, quits the company in protest.  He would be replaced on commentary by Paul Heyman.  In November 2001, after the “Invasion” ended, Heyman was fired and Lawler returned to commentary.

2001 – Rico Constantino defeats Nick Dinsmore, to win the NWA-OVW Heavyweight Championship.

2010 – In Louisville, KY, Shiloh Jonze defeats Kamikaze Kid, to win the OVW Television Championship.  The decision is later reversed, after it’s revealed that the referee of the match was not licensed to be a referee in Kentucky.  Also, James Thomas (aka Moose, not to be confused with TNA’s Moose) is stripped of the OVW Heavyweight Championship after attacking officials.  Brent Wellington would win a Battle Royal to become the new champion.

2011 – WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper is cast to provide the voice of bounty hunter “Bolphunga,” in the DC Comics animated film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.  The film was released in June 2011.

2014 – WWE NXT arRIVAL is held at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, with over 400 fans in attendance.  The Ascension (Konnor & Viktor) defeat mystery opponents Too Cool (Scotty 2 Hotty & Grandmaster Sexay), to retain the NXT Tag Team Championship.  Paige retains the NXT Women’s Championship after defeating Emma via submission.  In the main event, Adrian Neville defeats Bo Dallas, in a Ladder Match, to win the NXT Championship.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: 2-time NWA World Tag Team Champion – in TNA – Lance Archer (40 years old);  indy wrestler Everett Connors (23 years old);  former WWWF & GCW wrestler Bill White (72 years old); and United Kingdom wrestler Sha Samuels (32 years old).
