Happy birthday, Ivory!

Happy birthday, Ivory!

1987 – On Thanksgiving Night, both the WWF and the National Wrestling Alliance air pay-per-view events on the same night.  The NWA holds it’s annual Starrcade event (and NWA’s very first pay-per-view) in Chicago, while WWF holds it’s inaugural Survivor Series event from Richfield, Ohio.  The WWF, which had aired pay-per-view events since 1985, issued an ultimatum to cable providers that, if they aired Starrcade instead of Survivor Series, or even alongside Survivor Series, they would not be allowed to air WrestleMania IV in 1988.  As a result, very few providers carried Starrcade nationwide.

At Starrcade ’87, Dusty Rhodes defeats Lex Luger, in a Steel Cage Match, to win the NWA United States Championship.  In a title unification match, Nikita Koloff (UWF) defeats Terry Taylor (NWA);  this unifies the NWA and UWF Television Championships (the UWF title becomes retired).  In the main event, Ric Flair defeats Ron Garvin, in a Steel Cage Match, to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.  Complete results can be found here.

In the main event at the inaugural Survivor Series, the team of Andre the Giant, One Man Gang, King Kong Bundy, Butch Reed, and Rick Rude defeat the team of Hulk Hogan, Paul Orndorff, Don Muraco, Ken Patera, and Bam Bam Bigelow.  Complete results can be found here.

1994 – At an untelevised event at Madison Square Garden in New York, Diesel defeats Bob Backlund, to become the new WWF Champion.  The match only takes eight seconds.

1995 – Smoky Mountain Wrestling holds it’s final event before ceasing operations a couple weeks later.

1995 – At the inaugural WCW World War 3, Randy Savage wins the vacant WCW World Heavyweight Championship after winning the 60-man, 3-ring World War 3 Battle Royal.  Full results of this pay-per-view can be found here.

2000 – The final WCW Mayhem event is held in Milwaukee in front of 3,800 fans.  General Rection defeats Lance Storm, to win the United States Championship.  The Insiders (Kevin Nash and Diamond Dallas Page) defeat The Perfect Event (Shawn Stasiak and Chuck Palumbo), to win the World Tag Team Championship.  In the main event, Scott Steiner defeats Booker T, in a Straitjacket Steel Cage Match, to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.  Complete results can be found here.

2006 – WWE Survivor Series is held in Philadelphia in front of 15,400 fans.  Full results can be found here.  In what would be her final match in WWE, Lita loses the Women’s Championship to Mickie James.  In the main event, Batista defeats King Booker, in a Last Chance Match, to win the World Heavyweight Championship.  Had Batista lost, he wouldn’t be allowed to compete for the title as long as King Booker was champion.

2015 – Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame 1994 Inductee Tommy Gilbert passes away at age 75.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: Former WWE NXT performer King Konstantine (30 years old);  former OVW performer Dylan Klein (34 years old);  indy wrestlers Bobby Shields (35 years old), Brian Lee (50 years old), and Purple Haze (47 years old);  WWF Tough Enough Season 1 co-winner & 3-time WWF Hardcore Champion Maven (40 years old);  3-time WWF Women’s Champion Ivory (55 years old)

Today would’ve been the 74th birthday for 2006 WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Blackjack Mulligan, the 88th birthday for WWWF performer Max Mortier, and the 58th birthday for former CMLL Tag Team Champion El Texano.
