In Memoriam

On this day in 2007, the wrestling world lost 4-time ECW Tag Team Champion George “John Kronus” Caiazo aged just 38. It was long-time tag partner Perry Saturn who kickstarted Kronus’ wrestling career. Kronus took a job as a bouncer in a nightclub managed by Saturn and expressed an interest in becoming a wrestler. Saturn directed him to Killer Kowalski’s wrestling school, where he wrestled his 1st matches in the late 1980′s. Kronus & Saturn formed a tag team in the early 1990′s, known as ‘The Harvesters of Sorrow’, though the name was soon changed to ‘The Eliminators’ on the suggestion of Jerry Lawler. The Eliminators won their 1st tag team championship in the USWA in 1993, before moving to Japan to compete for WAR. They returned to the USA in 1995, competing for ECW, where a planned sado-masochism gimmick was abandoned in favor of the unstoppable force gimmick that we remember today. Over the next 2 years, the pair became 3-time ECW Tag Team Champions, before Saturn tore his ACL during a match, ruling him out of action for most of the year. That match would turn out to be the last time The Eliminators wrestled together, as Saturn left ECW for WCW late in the year. Kronus initially competed in the singles division, before forming a new tag team, ‘The Gangstanators’, with New Jack, with the pair adding Kronus’ 4th ECW Tag Team Title reign. Kronus left ECW in 1999 to join XPW, though would leave the promotion less than 2 years later. He then promoted Dangerously Intense Wrestling, a Philadelphia indy, before retiring from the ring in 2002. Kronus largely stayed away from wrestling through the remainder of his life, though he returned to the ring for two Hardcore Homecoming shows in 2005. He was found dead in his fiancée’s home of what was later discovered to be a heart attack, brought on by an enlarged heart. Kronus had recently undergone knee surgery, which may have aggravated the condition
