Wrestling By The Numbers: Teddy Long

World Wrestling Entertainment has parted ways with long-time performer Theodore ‘Teddy’ Long after his contract expired on June 12th and he decided to retire from the industry. The 66-year-old Birmingham Alabama native had spent the last 16-years with the WWE performing as both a referee and authoritative figure. Long first signed with the WWE in December of 1998 and spent 4-years as a referee with the organization. After a brief absence he returned in January of 2003 as Theodore R. Long managing a variety of wrestlers including Rodney Mack, Jazz, D’Lo Brown, Mark Henry, Christopher Nowinski, Mark Jindrak and others. Long then started an 8-year stint where he was the General Manager of Smackdown and also was in-charge of the ECW brand in 2008. He feuded with John Laurinaitis in 2012 and held the role of Senior Advisor prior to being removed from television 11-months ago.

Theodore R. Long had a 29-year career in the professional wrestling industry debuting back in 1985 as a backstage hand for performers Tommy Rich and Abdullah the Butcher. Long went on to work on the ring crews for NWA events and worked as a referee in Championship Wrestling From Florida. Jim Crockett Promotions signed Long later in the year as a referee and he went on to spend the next 11-years with the promotion. He officiated for 4-years until 1989 when he turned heel and became a top manager for JCP. Long remained with WCW until 1996 managing the likes of Ron Simmons, Butch Reed, Norman the Lunatic, Mark Calaway, Sid Vicious, Danny Spivey and others. He was inducted into the NWA Hall Of Fame in 2012.
