This Day In Wrestling History – April 1st

First let me start by thanking everyone, this has been such a fun ride. It was a lot of fun, but sadly this will be my final & last This Day In History post. Steve has decided it just takes up too much space on the page, & too much memory on the system. Maybe he’ll let someone pick it back up someday. Just want to thank all the readers!


1982 – Andre The Giant won the NJPW MSG League, defeating Killer Khan in the final. Antonio Inoki was supposed to face Andre in the final, but was injured, & could not compete

2003 – At a Smackdown taping in Spokane, Washington, Sable returned to the WWE after a 4-year absence, interrupting Torrie Wilson’s celebration over her Playboy magazine cover.  The return shocked many, given the bad blood between Sable & the WWE, which included Sable filing a lawsuit against WWE at 1 point for sexual harassment

2007 – Steve Austin becomes the 1st reader-voted inductee to the GERWECK.NET Hall of Fame, securing 91% of the vote

2008 – The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) were inducted into the GERWECK.NET Hall of Fame, securing 85% of the reader votes

2008 – Former professional wrestler Harrison “Hardbody Harrison” Norris Jr., 42,  from Cartersville, Ga., was sentenced to life in prison & lifetime supervised release for committing multiple violations of federal sex trafficking & forced labor statutes in connection with a scheme to force women into prostitution. He was also sentenced to pay a $2,400 special assessment

2010 – Linda McMahon tendered her resignation from the Connecticut Board of Education


In 1990, WWF Wrestlemania VI was held at the SkyDome,  in Toronto, Canada. It was the first Mania to be held outside of the US. In attendance were a young Christian, Edge, & Lance Storm:

In 2001, WWF Wrestlemania X-Seven was held at the Reliant Astrodome, in Houston, Texas. With an attendance of 67,925. This event is often cited as the conclusion of the Attitude Era:

– Chris Jericho defeated William Regal to retain the WWF Intercontinental Title
– Tazz & The APA (Bradshaw & Farooq) (with Jacqueline) defeated Right To Censor (Val Venis, The Goodfather, & Bull Buchanan) (with Steven Richards)
– Kane defeated Raven & The Big Show in a Triple Threat Hardcore Match to win the WWF Hardcore Title
– Eddie Guerrero (with Perry Saturn) defeated Test to win the WWF European Title
– Kurt Angle defeated Chris Benoit
– Chyna defeated Ivory to win the WWF Women’s Title

In 2006, the WWE Hall Of Fame Ceremony was held at the Rosemont Theater, in Rosemont, Illinois. The class of 2006 were:

– Bret Hart (inducted by Steve Austin)
– Eddie Guerrero (inducted by Chris Benoit, Chavo Guerrero Jr. & Rey Mysterio Jr.)
– Gene Okerlund (inducted by Hulk Hogan)
– The Blackjacks, Lanza & Mulligan (inducted by Bobby Heenan)
– Sensational Sherri (inducted by Ted Dibiase Sr.)
– Verne Gagne (inducted by his son Greg Gagne)
– Tony Atlas (inducted by S.D. Jones)
– William ‘The Refrigerator’ Perry (inducted by John Cena)

In 2007, WWE Wrestlemania 23 was held at Ford Field, in Detroit, Michigan. It broke several records, becoming the highest grossing one-day event in WWE & indeed the whole of North American wrestling history (around $5.4 million in ticket sales) & also broke the record for the biggest Mania buyrate, with around 1.2 million buys. I was at this event live in person, it was my 2nd Wrestlemania, & was truly amazing to experience. I highly recommend everyone experience at least 1 WM in their lifetime:

– Bobby Lashley (for Donald Trump) defeated Umaga (for Vince McMahon) in the Battle Of The Billionaires, forcing Vince McMahon to have his head shaved
– Melina defeated Ashley Massaro in a Lumberjill Match to retain the WWE Women’s Title
– John Cena defeated Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE Title

In 2011, ROH Honor Takes Centre Stage was held across 2 days in Atlanta, Georgia. This was the 1st day:

– Homicide defeated Colt Cabana, Caleb Konley & Tommaso Ciampa in a Four Corner Survival Match
– Davey Richards defeated Roderick Strong
– Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) defeated The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli) to win the ROH Tag Team Titles
– Eddie Edwards defeated Christopher Daniels to retain the ROH World Title

In 2011, WWE held it’s final session of “Wrestlemania Fan Axxess” at in Atlanta, Georgia with 1 match:

– Roddy Piper & MTV’s Rob Drydek defeated Zack Ryder & Tyson Kidd

In 2012, WWE Wrestlemania 28 was at Sun Life Stadium,  in Miami, Florida. It was build as “The Rock vs. John Cena: Once In A Lifetime.” With attendance of 78,363:

– Primo & Epico (with Rosa Mendes) defeated The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso), & Justin Gabriel & Tyson Kidd to retain the WWE World Tag Team Titles
Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan (with AJ Lee) to win the WWE World Heavyweight Title
– Kane defeated Randy Orton
– The Big Show defeated Cody Rhodes to win the WWE Intercontinental Title
– Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos defeated Eve Torres & Beth Phoenix
– The Undertaker defeated Triple H to move THE STREAK to 20-0

1994 – The Rock N’ Roll Express defeated the Heavenly Bodies (Tom Pritchard & Jimmy Del Ray) to win the SMW Tag Team Title in Pikeville, Kentucky,

1996 – on Raw, Goldust defeated Savio Vega to win the vacant WWF Intercontinental Title

2002 – on Raw, Bubba Ray Dudley defeated Raven to win the WWF Hardcore Title

2007 – Jun Akiyama & Takeshi Rikio defeated Takeshi Morishima & Mohammed Yone to win the GHC Tag Team Titles
