Wrestling By The Numbers: Wataru Inoue

New Japan Pro Wrestling superstar Wataru Inoue has announced his retirement from in-ring competition. The 40-year-old Tokyo Japan native’s 14-year professional career started back in 1999 after having been trained by Animal Hamaguchi and Kojo Kanemoto. Inoue started out competing briefly for independent Japanese organizations before joining NJPW as a regular performer. While spending almost his entire career with the company he became a former 1-Time IWGP Tag-Team Champion, 1-Time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and also a 1-Time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag-Team Champion. Inoue is remembered for his run as apart of the New Japan Junior Seikigun faction which feuded with wrestlers aligned with Jushin Liger’s Control Terrorism Unit. The feud between the two groups is remembered for a series of physically tough stiff matches between the hated rivals.

In the past few years Wataru Inoue had moved up from a junior heavyweight wrestler to the company’s heavyweight ranks. The final match of his career was broadcast on March 3rd of last year on Samurai Tv as apart of the NJPW Anniversary Show. Inoue teamed with Super Strong Machine, Yuji Nagata and Captain New Japan against Hirooki Goto, Karl Anderson, Ryusuke Taguchi and Tama Tonga in an 8-Man Tag-Team Match. Inoue suffered a neck injury and had not wrestled in the past 11-months prior to announcing his retirement back on February 2nd. New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced Inoue will be remaining with the organization working in a backstage role.
