Wrestling By The Numbers: Hulk Hogan

TNA Wrestling has parted ways with the most famous wrestler in the history of professional wrestling Terry ‘Hulk Hogan’ Bollea. The 60-year-old Augusta Georgia native had spent the previous 4-years with TNA where he occasionally wrestled and also acted as the company’s on-screen General Manager. Bollea first appeared in TNA back in 2003 when footage was shown of then NWA Champion Jeff Jarrett attacking Hogan at a press conference in Japan. Bollea had contract talks with the organization but wasn’t signed after the angle aired on TNA television. During his recent 4-year run Bollea had matches in TNA with the likes of Ric Flair and Sting but when his contract expired last month he was not able to come to terms on a new deal.

Terry Bollea’s 36-year hall of fame career started back in 1977 after having been trained by the late Hiro Matsuda. In the early stages of his career Bollea competed as both Terry Boulder & Sterling Golden and had runs in Championship Wrestling From Florida, Louie Tillet’s Alabama territory and the Continental Wrestling Association in Memphis. In 1979 he signed with the World Wide Wrestling Federation and spent a year with the company before signing with New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1980. In the early 1980′s Bollea would split time between NJPW and Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association where he would become Hulk Hogan and worked as a top draw for the organizations.

Terry Bollea was re-signed by the World Wrestling Federation in 1983 and spent the next decade with the company as the WWE’s top star. Hulkamania ended up running wild for Vince McMahon as Bollea became largely responsible for one of the company’s most profitable periods in history and was used as the centerpiece during the early years of Wrestlemania. In 1993 Hogan left the WWE and over the next year returned to NJPW and appeared in numerous television shows and movies. In 1994 World Championship Wrestling signed Bollea and he went on to spend the next 6-years with the organization. Alongside Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, Hogan would form the popular nWo faction which ended up vaulting WCW above their rival WWE in terms of overall business.

From 2002-2003 and from 2005-2007 Hulk Hogan would again have stints working for Vince McMahon’s WWE in a main event role. The 2005 WWE Hall Of Fame inductee last appeared for the company on the December 10th 2007 episode of WWE Raw where he saved Hornswoggle from being attacked by The Great Khali. Prior to signing with TNA Wrestling in 2009 Hogan made appearances wrestling for both Memphis Wrestling and PMG Clash Of The Legends. He also promoted numerous events entitled Hulkamania in Australia where he wrestled in the show’s main events against long-time rival Ric Flair.

Always wondered if there is a website that collects stats like these? For example,

    ” 73 Matches ( 22nd Most All-Time ) on WCW Monday Nitro.”

I’m surprised Hogan didn’t crack the top 20. It’d be interesting to see who the those other 21 are.
