In Memoriam

On this day in 1983, the wrestling world lost WWE Hall of Famer ‘The Grand Wizard’ Ernie Roth at the age of 57. Roth began his career as a radio DJ before becoming involved with his local Detroit territories in the 1960’s. Roth portrayed several different characters in his early career, but it was the ‘Abdullah Farouk’ moniker which brought him his early fame. Farouk and his charge, The Sheik, became one of the most hated duos in the NWA territories across the United States, partly due to the barbarity of The Sheik and partly due to the underhanded tactics of Farouk. In 1972, the WWWF came calling and Roth abandoned the Farouk persona in favour of becoming ‘The Grand Wizard of Wrestling’, often shortened to simply ‘The Grand Wizard’. He found almost immediate success, leading Toru Tanaka and Mr Fuji to two Tag Team Title reigns. Within 5 years, he would add two World Championships to his resume, courtesy of Stan Stasiak and Billy Graham (who incidentally was his first babyface client). In the late 70’s, The Wizard engaged in a feud with Bob Backlund, after Backlund defeated Graham to end his World Championship reign. He would never again manage a world champion, but remained as a major focus in the promotion, leading Pat Patterson, Ken Patera and Don Muraco to Intercontinental Championship victories. Roth was still under the employ of the renamed WWF when he died of a sudden heart attack. He had been scheduled to manage Paul Orndorff through the remainder of 1983 and into 1984. Tributes poured in from across the world of wrestling, though perhaps the most poignant came from Sgt Slaughter, who saluted his empty corner following a match at Madison Square Garden in the week after Roth’s passing. He was posthumously inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame by Slaughter in 1995.
