In Memoriam

On this day in 1992, the wrestling world lost NWA tag team star Roy Heffernan at the age of 67. Heffernan was an accomplished weightlifter and bodybuilder in his youth, winning the Mr Australia title in the 1940’s. Heffernan was trained as a wrestler by his father Larry and debuted in Australia in 1944, though due to the culture of Australian wrestling at the time (bookers would rarely push a wrestler unless they had proved themselves in larger markets) his career did not pick up until he left for America in 1953. Heffernan’s big break came with the founding of The Fabulous Kangaroos tag team in 1957; promoter Joe Blanchard put fellow Australian Al Costello in touch with Heffernan and mere weeks after their Stampede debut, were regarded as one of the top teams in Canada. Over the next 8 years, the duo won championships in Canada, Japan, Ohio, Florida, New York, Texas, Michigan and California. In 1965, while competing for Vancouver’s All-Star Wrestling, the duo decided to call it quits. Heffernan returned to Australia, leaving Costello to reform the Kangaroos with a series of other wrestlers. Upon his return home, Heffernan became one of the top stars for the WCW promotion, but failed to win championship gold before retiring in the 1980’s. Heffernan lived out a quiet retirement in Sydney before succumbing to a heart attack
