Column: WWE Week in Review: What’s next for the champions?

With Night of Champions now history, it’s time to rundown the events of the past week…

Goldust had an impressive showing last week against Randy Orton as they prolong the Rhodes/McMahon family war. This has potential to be fun. Having dropped the WWE Title, Orton could be the face of this war as Triple H finds someone else to go after new champ Daniel Bryan. I just hope we haven’t seen the last of Goldddddd-dust.

For some reason I keep thinking back to the late ‘90s when the WWE Title changed hands on a regular basis. I think we might be headed that way again. I don’t see Bryan holding on to the belt for too long, but perhaps several times as the year progresses. I have a feeling Big Show will be forced to take Bryan on next.

Whether the retirement is legit or the result of Ric Flair’s antics, seeing Jim Ross leave WWE is disappointing but not shocking. For most of the last year he hasn’t had any airtime on the main shows anyhow. He gave us a lot of great memories. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him in TNA. Light workload and the chance to reunite with Tazz!

I was surprised to see AJ Lee keep the Divas title at Night of Champions. She appears to be set for a nice run as champ. Are any of the current Divas possible challengers? Not sure, but there are a few available who would be good to see in a WWE ring again.

Speaking of disappointments, I thought the Primetime Players would upset the Shield for tag gold at Night of Champions. No such luck. I do see this feud continuing, though, and I think the Players will be champs before 2014. Hopefully time will be given to develop this feud.

CM Punk beat Curtis Axel, but was not so lucky with Paul Heyman. Ryback crashed the party allowing Heyman to pin Punk. And with that this hot feud is certain to continue on for the next several pay-per-views. How does Brock Lesnar still fit in to all of this? And is Ryback officially tied to Heyman? Lots of unanswered questions as this war continues to rage.

Obviously, the Big Show working for Triple H smacks of Shawn Michaels going broke and working for JBL. Perhaps they had the same investor? Anyhow, perhaps Wrestlemania 30 will feature Show & Michaels vs. Hunter & JBL? Likely not, but we know how this ends, and Triple H is going to be the worse for wear.

With only one championship changing hands last night, I expect at least one rematch on Raw that sees another belt find a new owner. The Shield are hot now, so my money is own Alberto Del Rio or Curtis Axel. Maybe Damien Sandow will get a victory, too?

It was great seeing Edge last week. This is a trend that needs to continue: guests who are former Superstars of Divas (sorry, Bob Barker) to join in the fun every now and then. It’s fun to see the old stars and especially nice when they have a connection to a current feud like Edge did with Triple H and Randy Orton.

After a pay-per-view I like to pause and consider what the next Wrestlemania looks like. Today I see these potential matches: Daniel Bryan vs. Dean Ambrose, Undertaker vs. Sting, Ryback vs. Goldberg or Batista or Brock Lesnar (too many choices) and John Cena vs. Randy Orton. I’ll change my mind after Battleground.

And in case you missed the shows this week: RAW: Kofi Kingston over Curtis Axel by DQ… Bray Wyatt over Dolph Ziggler… Natalya, Brie Bella & Naomi over Alicia Fox, Layla & Tamina Snuka… Alberto Del Rio over R-Truth… Santino Marella over Antonio Cesaro… Damien Sandow over Miz… Randy Orton over Goldust… Rob Van Dam over Ryback by DQ… Daniel Bryan over Dean Ambrose… MAIN EVENT: Kofi Kingston over Antonio Cesaro… Prime Time Players over Heath Slater & Jinder Mahal… Big E. Langston over R-Truth… SUPERSTARS: The Uso Brothers over 3MB… Big E. Langston over Zack Ryder… NXT: Enzo Amore & Colin Cassidy over Alexander Rusev & Scott Dawson by DQ… Paige over Sasha Banks… Xavier Woods over Leo Kruger… NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS PRE-SHOW: Primetime Players over Tons of Funk, The Uso Brothers and The Real Americans in a Tag Team Turmoil match… NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS: INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH: Curtis Axel over Kofi Kingston… DIVAS FATAL FOURWAY TITLE MATCH: AJ Lee over Natalya, Brie Bella and Naomi… WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Rob Van Dam over Alberto Del Rio by DQ… Miz over Fandango… ELIMINATION HANDICAP MATCH: Curtis Axel & Paul Heyman over CM Punk… UNITED STATES TITLE MATCH: Dean Ambrose over Dolph Ziggler… TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns over The Primetime Players… WWE TITLE MATCH: Daniel Bryan over Randy Orton.
