Column: WWE Week in Review
WWE Week in Review
by Tom Daniels
In a week culminating in the 26th annual Summerslam pay-per-view event, I proudly present the first WWE Weekly Top 20, a look at 20 things that made the week unforgettable!
1. ORTON SURPRISES BRYAN, TRIPLE H SURPRISES US ALL!
It seemed likely Randy Orton might cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase, but what seemed less likely was his apparent heel turn and alignment with Triple H. Orton makes a better heel, as does Triple H. Could this be the start of Evolution 2.0? And where do Stephanie and Vince fit in to all of this? Things just got a bit more interesting. And don’t forget Daniel Bryan and John Cena. After their outstanding match how do they fit into the title picture? Triple threat at Night of Champions?
2. YOUNG MAKES HISTORY
Sadly, many fans couldn’t resist the chance to make what amounted to homophobic comments after Darren Young came out last week. Hopefully, we will get to a point where that isn’t necessary, however we should be proud that Young shared this with us, and understand to many who are struggling with their identities, he might have made their next step a bit easier.
3. THE WYATT’S UP THE ANTE
“Love is a burning thing…,” could that be what the ring of fire match started yesterday? Bray Wyatt, with some help from his “family” defeated Kane and then took him away with them. Will Kane join the family — or are the Wyatt’s in for a world of hurt down the road? And just who will join Kane in this fight?
4. DIVAS GET SOME LOVE
With the success of E!’s “Total Divas,” the fairer sex seems to be enjoying a tad bit more exposure on WWE programming. When was the last time Divas were involved in two separate matches on a pay-per-view? I’m all for an exciting Divas division. With the addition of a few new faces the division has the potential to become exciting once again.
5. MCMAHON’S BEEN SHOPPING
In regards to Vince McMahon’s recent attire: wow.
6. THE SHIELD MEETS THEIR MATCH?
With Big Show and Mark Henry assisting Rob Van Dam this week, one must wonder if the trio is enough to stop the Shield. One also must wonder if the Wyatt Family is stealing a bit of the rub the Shield has. I’d expect this battle to go on a bit more, but if I were Rob Van Dam I’d expect one of the Lex Luger’s to turn on me at some point.
7. IF NOT CHRISTIAN, WHO?
Was slightly surprised to see Alberto Del Rio keep the World Title. He just lacks something to me. Perhaps RVD moves into this title picture if Christian doesn’t get a rematch. Maybe Ricardo Rodriguez returns with a new superstar?
8. WHO’D THESE GUYS MAKE MAD?
In cameo appearances at Summerslam we were treated to Ryback, Yoshi Tatsu, Fandango and Curt Hawkins. One must wonder who 3MB, Justin Gabriel, Curtis Axel, Tons of Funk, Jack Swagger, Antonio Cesaro, Kofi Kingston and several others made mad to not get the same treatment. And has anyone see Primo, Epico, Ezekiel Jackson and David Otunga anywhere?
9. LANGSTON NOT A HEYMAN GUY?
Big E. Langston met Curtis Axel on NXT and continued to show why he might have potential as a powerful face on the main roster. After winning by DQ, Langston went ahead and pinned Axel for a 5-count. Perhaps they will meet again…
10. MENUNOUS’ STREAK CONTINUES
Love her or hate her, Maria Menunous’ undefeated streak continues. Who’d have thought she was the Undertaker of the Divas?
11. BA-ROCKKK LESNAR VICTORIOUS
“The Best vs. The Beast” was a great match that showed C.M. Punk is capable of running with the likes of Lesnar. It was great this match wasn’t rushed. I am certain we have not seen the last of these two in the ring together.
12. THREE TO KEEP AN EYE ON
NXT is ripe with stars who have main roster appeal. If Mason Ryan continues to develop as he is the sky’s the limit for him. Corey Graves has a unique look that might serve him well should he bulk up a bit. Finally, Leo Kruger has that specialness about him that would make him a great heel on the main stage. I thought NXT would bore me when I started watching, however I find the show entertaining and sense many of the stars there will be on Monday and Friday nights soon.
13. THE MOUSTACHE IS GONE, NOW TAKE THE BEARD
Thank goodness Cody Rhodes shaved his awful moustache. It was too heelish, anyhow. Now perhaps he could share a razor with Shawn Michaels. That creepy beard at Summerslam smacks of “Deliverance.”
14. CURSE OF THE CASE?
Damien Sandow competed in three matches this week and lost every one (Randy Orton, Christian and Cody Rhodes). Perhaps winning the case wasn’t such a good idea.
15. ABOUT THAT HOSTING GIG…
At least the Miz got a spot on the card. But he did have Fandango to deal with. Can’t wait to where this is headed (sarcasm)…
16. IF I HAD TO BOOK WRESTLEMANIA 30 RIGHT THIS MINUTE
Randy Orton vs. C.M. Punk, Undertaker vs. Sting, John Cena vs. Triple H
17. GET THESE GUYS A HISTORY BOOK
As the ring of fire match started, JBL, Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler all lied to us. “We’ve never seen anything like this.” “We’ve never seen Bray Wyatt in the ring.” Geez, get these guys a WWE Encyclopedia and look up Husky Harris and inferno match.
18. MY FAVORITE QUOTE
Vince McMahon to Brad Maddox, about Triple H: “He’s never been the same since he cut his hair.”
19. TIME TO DROP THE WII
With all the commercials for the new WWE video game, I might need to buy a system to play it on!
