In Memoriam

On this day in 2005, the wrestling world lost former WWF announcer ‘Lord’ Alfred Hayes at the age of 76. Hayes began competing in his native UK in the 1950’s, wrestling as Judo Al Hayes, a gimmick based on his legitimate black belt in judo. Hayes left Britain for America in the late 1970’s, competing in several southern NWA territories, finding most success in Western States, where he was a two-time Heavyweight Champion. He briefly returned to the UK at the turn of the 80’s, but was soon back in America with the WWF. Hayes first appeared as Vince McMahon’s ‘sidekick’ on Tuesday Night Titans before becoming an announcer and backstage interviewer. He remained in these positions until leaving the company in 1995 after being involved in a car accident which would eventually cause him to lose a leg to gangrene. He lived out a quiet retirement at his home in Dallas, before succumbing to a series of strokes. The WWF paid tribute to him on the following episode of Raw, airing a video package alongside a ten-bell salute. He was also featured as a ‘voiceover’ on the November 2010 ‘Old School Raw’
