Review of the Hardcore Truth: Bob Holly Biography‏

by Alan Wojcik

Pop quiz readers, name for me the stars of the WWF Attitude Era during the WCW/WWF Monday Night Wars. Ready for some of my choices: Vince McMahon, the Rock, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Undertaker, Kane, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, HHH and Hardcore Holly. No you didn’t misread my last name on the list. Call him Thurman “Sparky” Plugg, Bob “Sparkplug” Holly or even “Bombastic” Bob Holly. Over a sixteen year period Robert “Bob Holly” Howard was one of the hardest working men in the WWF and deserves that credit to the day he leaves wrestling and earth. He sat down with Ross Williams to create THE HARDCORE TRUTH: THE BOB HOLLY STORY (ECW Press, 292pp, $19.95 US/CDN) which is a must read for fans of the Attitude Era.

Long before the WWF came into his life in the early 1990’s, our author was working in steel mills, mechanic shops, bar fighting for money & yes he was a legitimate race car driver before he gave professional wrestling a shot as a way to make money for his young daughter. The wrestling story gets fun talking about doing enhancement matches against Ric Flair. Page 62 is where the WWF story begins and goes on break-neck speed until the end. You will learn all about the origin of his wrestling career, the names given to him by WWF Creative members which included Ed Koskie, JJ Dillon, Vince Russo, Brian Gewirtz & others, the ups and downs through injuries (all of them are covered in intimate detail) and the tons of politics that you have never known about unless you read the dirtsheets.

The “BULLY” & “STIFF” labels Holly was strapped with comes up as does the Matt Cappotelli incident during Tough Enough 3 on MTV & his business partnerships with the late Michael “Crash Holly” Lockwood & Nora “Molly Holly” Greenwald. I do not want to reveal everything in the book here in this review. I will tell you that this book deserves to be praised as much as the biographies of Mick Foley, Steve Austin & Bret Hart. Holly got a raw deal from the WWF and the fact he is not working for them, TNA Impact Wrestling or ROH in ring or behind the scenes is a shame. How do you LIKE him now??
