Smoky Mountain Cup Results
April 26, 2013
Ricky Morton has only one accomplishment left on his professional “bucket list.” To become the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion.
After winning the Smoky Mountain Cup, Morton is now on the cusp of achieving that dream. The ring veteran reigned supreme at NWA Smoky Mountain’s biggest event of the year, defeating Tony Kozina and outlasting five other world-class competitors despite injury to win the 2013 Smoky Mountain Cup on Friday night in front of a jam-packed crowd at the Civic Auditorium in Kingsport, Tennessee.
Robbie Cassidy, a former two-time winner of this tournament, presented Morton with the trophy. Morton then took the microphone and gave an emotional speech about how much the tournament win, and a chance to be NWA Champion, meant to him.
Morton will get that chance very soon! In less than one month, he’ll challenge NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Rob Conway on May 18 back at Civic Auditorium in Kingsport.
It was a good night for one of Morton’s proteges as well. Chase Owens, who was trained by Morton, successfully defended the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship against Davey Richards in the main event. Owens and Richards went to war for nearly 30 minutes, and despite injuring his knee midway through the match, Owens was able to rally and make Richards tap out in the middle of the ring. Defeating “The American Wolf” one on one should further cement Owens as one of the top young wrestlers, not just in the NWA, but the entire world.
