This Day In Wrestling History – April 26th‏

Events

In 1994, AAA TripleMania II-A was held in Aguascalientes, Mexico. This was the first year to feature the ‘TripleMania Series’ of events, hosting 3 TripleMania events per year rather than one. This lasted until 1997, when there were 2 events, before reverting to one for 1998.

– Rey Misterio, Rey Misterio Jr & Winners defeat Los Destructores (Tony Arce, Vulcano & Rocco Valente)
– Misterioso, Fuerza Guerrera & Juventud Guerrera defeat Latin Lover, Volador & El Mexicano
– Tiger Mask III, Konnan & Mascara Sagrada defeat La Parka, Blue Panther & Fishman
– Los Payosos (Coco Rojo, Coco Verde & Coco Amarillo) defeat Los Hermanos Dinamita (Cien Caras, Mascara Ano 2000 & Universo 2000) to win the Mexican National Trios Title
– El Hijo Del Santo, Octagon & Perro Aguayo defeat Los Gringos Locos (Love Machine, Black Cat & Eddy Guerrero) by DQ
– Heavy Metal defeats Jerry Estrada in a Hair vs Hair Match

In 1998, WWF Unforgiven: In Your House. This was the first PPV to use the new ‘scratch’ logo in it’s promotional material – Wrestlemania XIV had used it on the ring apron, but all graphics featured the classic logo. This event also saw the debut of the Inferno & Evening Gown Matches

– Triple H defeats Owen Hart to retain the WWF European Title
– The New Midnight Express (Bodacious Bart & Bombastic Bob) defeat The Rock n Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) to retain the NWA Tag Team Titles
– Luna Vachon defeats Sable in an Evening Gown Match
– The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) defeat LOD 2000 (Hawk & Animal) to retain the WWF Tag Team Titles
– The Undertaker defeats Kane in an Inferno Match
– Dude Love defeats Steve Austin by DQ (Austin retains the WWF Title)

In 2009, the 11th and final WWE Backlash was held in Providence, Rhode Island. Fittingly, the event was held in the same (albeit renamed) arena as the first one

– Christian defeats Jack Swagger to win the ECW Title
– Chris Jericho defeats Ricky Steamboat
– Jeff Hardy defeats Matt Hardy in an I Quit Match
– Santina Marella defeats Beth Phoenix to retain the title of Miss Wrestlemania
– The Legacy (Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase Jr & Cody Rhodes) defeat Triple H, Batista & Shane McMahon. Orton pins Triple H to win the WWE Title
– Edge defeats John Cena in a Last Man Standing Match to win the World Heavyweight Title

Title Changes

1992 – Johnny Hotbody defeats Jimmy Snuka to win the NWA-ECW Title

1994 – on Raw, The Headshrinkers (Samu & Fatu) defeat The Quebecers (Jacques & Pierre) to win the WWF Tag Team Titles

1995 – Bob Holly defeats Jeff Jarrett to win the WWF Intercontinental Title, but the title is immediately vacated due to the controversial finish of the match. Jarrett defeats Holly in the following rematch to win back the title

1998 – The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) defeat The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane) to win the NWA United States Tag Team Titles

1999 – on Nitro, Sting defeats Diamond Dallas Page to win the WCW World Title, but would lose it back to Page later in the show in a No-DQ Fatal Four Way Match also featuring Kevin Nash & Goldberg. Also, Rey Misterio Jr defeats Psychosis to win the WCW Cruiserweight Title

2004 – Negro Casas defeats Averno to win the CMLL World Middleweight Title

2010 – on Raw, The Hart Dynasty (David Hart Smith & Tyson Kidd) defeat ShoMiz (The Big Show & The Miz) to win the WWE Unified Tag Team Titles

Birthdays

Happy birthday to former WCW wrestlers Tank Abbott (48) and Ron ‘The Yeti’ Reis (43), 3-time TNA X-Division Champion Amazing Red (31) and WWE ‘Grand Slam’ Champion Kane (46)

Also, today would have been the birthday of NWA legend ‘Killer’ Karl Kox (82)
