Wrestling By The Numbers: William ‘Paul Bearer/Percy Pringle III’ Moody

One of the greatest managers in the business during his time, William Moody who had great success portraying both Paul Bearer and Percy Pringle III has passed away. The 58-year-old Mobile Alabama native had spent the majority of the last 39-years performing in the wrestling industry. Moody passed away on March 5th and while no official cause of death has been released, it has been reported Moody had been suffering from gallbladder issues, blood clots and complications due to years of battling morbid obesity. Moody first broke into the business as a ringside photographer taking pictures and selling them to local promoters. In 1974 he debuted wrestling and competed most notably for Central States Wrestling in Kansas City Missouri. It was in 1979 that Moody discovered his best talents as manager and became known as Percy Pringle III.

From 1984-1990 Percy Pringle III was a top manager in the business and performed in Florida Championship Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling and also the United States Wrestling Association. During this timeframe he was known for accompanying the likes of Rick Rude, Lex Luger, The Ultimate Warrior, Steve Austin and also Mark Calaway to the ring. William Moody signed with the World Wrestling Federation in 1990 and would go on to spend the next 12-years with the organization. Known also by his nickname, The Father Of Destruction, he would play an integral part in the WWE careers of The Undertaker, Kane, Mankind, Vader and The Executioner. Paul Bearer was taken off television in spring of 2000 and worked as a road agent and talent scout before leaving the WWE in October of 2002.

Percy Pringle III returned to professional wrestling for 1-year from 2002-2003 when Moody signed and performed with TNA Wrestling. He then signed a 3-year contract and returned to World Wrestling Entertainment in 2003 once again managing The Undertaker. After being removed from television in June of 2004 he stayed with the company as a booker before being released in the spring of 2005 and then later signed to a legends contract. William Moody in recent years had continued to make occasional appearances in the WWE and for various independent organizations as well. In recent years he also went back to working as both an mortician and embalmer something had experience doing before the Paul Bearer character was ever created.
