In Memoriam
On this day in 1999, the wrestling world lost one-time WCW Television Champion Rick ‘The Renegade’ Williams aged just 33. Williams trained under the great Killer Kowalski and made his indy debut in 1992, competing as ‘Rio, Lord of the Jungle’. A short tour with WAR was followed by his signing for WCW as ‘The Renegade’, a gimmick that was an intentional rip-off of The Ultimate Warrior. In March 1995, he made his television debut, appearing alongside Hulk Hogan at Uncensored. That summer, he defeated Arn Anderson to win the Television Title, and would retain it twice in the following two months against Paul Orndorff. Around this time, the real Ultimate Warrior appeared in several wrestling magazines, dispelling any rumours that Williams was the real deal. As a result, Williams’ push was halted; he dropped the title to DDP, then lost in quick time to Orndorff and Kevin Sullivan before being unceremoniously dumped by manager Jimmy Hart. After a six-month TV absence, Williams re-appeared as The Renegade (though this time bearing no resemblance to Warrior) but was used solely as a jobber on WCW’s B-shows. When the real Ultimate Warrior appeared in WCW, Williams was used as his stunt double, but this didn’t last long and he was released in late 1998, retiring from wrestling almost immediately. Following his release, Williams fell into a depression from which he would not recover. He committed suicide by gunshot.
