This Day In Wrestling History – January 30th‏


In 1991, WCW Clash of the Champions XIV: Dixie Dynamite, held in Gainesville, Georgia, was the first Clash event produced solely by WCW. It was also only the second to dip below a 4.0 TV rating and saw the WCW return of Dusty Rhodes

– Sting & Lex Luger defeat Doom (Ron Simmons & Butch Reed)
– Tom Zenk defeats Bobby Eaton to retain the WCW Television Title
– Missy Hyatt defeats Paul E Dangerously in an Arm-Wrestling Match
– Ric Flair fought Scott Steiner to a time-limit draw to retain the WCW World Title

In 2005, WWE Royal Rumble was held in Fresno, California

– The Undertaker defeats Heidenreich in a Casket Match
– JBL defeats The Big Show & Kurt Angle in a Triple Threat No-DQ Match to retain the WWE Title
– Triple H defeats Randy Orton to retain the World Heavyweight Title
– Batista wins the Royal Rumble, last eliminating John Cena. Cena & Batista initially eliminated each other at the same time, Vince McMahon came to the ring (tearing both quads in the process) and ordered the two to restart the match, leading to a Batista win

In 2011, WWE Royal Rumble was held in Boston, Massachusetts. There was an increase in the number of Rumble entrants this year from 30 to 40, though it has reverted back to 30 for 2012

– Edge defeats Dolph Ziggler to retain the World Heavyweight Title
– The Miz defeats Randy Orton to retain the WWE Title
– Eve Torres defeats Natalya, Layla & Michelle McCool in a Fatal Four Way Match to win the WWE Divas Title
– Alberto Del Rio wins the Royal Rumble, last eliminating Santino Marella. Kane increased his record of most consecutive Rumble appearances to 13 in this match

Title Changes

1920 – Joe Stecher defeats Earl Caddock to become the first multiple-time World Heavyweight Champion

1968 – Fritz von Erich & Billy Red Lyons defeat Spoiler #1 & Gary Hart to win the WCCW American Tag Team Titles

1970 – Danny Hodge defeats Umanosuke Ueda to win the NWA Junior Heavyweight Title

1984 – Chris Adams defeats Jimmy Garvin to win the WCCW American Heavyweight Title. Also, The Super Destroyers (1 & 2) defeat King Parsons & Brian Adias to win the WCCW American Tag Team Titles

1993 – Miss Texas defeats Leslie Belanger to win the USWA Womens Title

1993 – The Miracle Violence Connection (Steve Williams & Terry Gordy) defeat Toshiaki Kawada & Mitsuharu Misawa to win the AJPW Unified World Tag Team Titles


Happy birthday to TNA British Boot Camp winner Rockstar Spud (30), Shimmer regular Rebecca Knox (26), former AAA and AJPW Tag Team Champion Dark Ozz (38)
